[What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
Vntale,
I see what you did there. I want to assure that I am nowhere mindful enough to have thought of the movie: DAMN YANKEES. I may have thought of the play DAMN YANKEES though. However, that was , what one or two days ago? Short term memory is in short supply nowadays. However, my 49ers looked pretty good, while my Patriots did only okay.
We are watching on PBS three shows: Unforgotten , Professor T and Vanderwalk. They are well written and production value is high. Finally, we’re slogging through Game of thrones, I mean, Grey’s Anatomy. I don’t know which show has the most deaths. I think I will stop watching when McDreamy is mercifully killed off. I do like how the show affords the opportunity for young and very beautiful actors and actresses to act.

When I was in 9th grade when all my English class book reports were on baseball (until the teacher requested I do a non-baseball book one) .... I did one on the book version of the above movie / play - The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.

I am watching this too. Echo being underwhelmed by S1E1. On S1 E4 now. The actors are good. Story has grit and it moves fast but this is still a restaurant show not a mystery thriller. So genre is important before you commitheartwood wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 4:43 pm I tried The Bear on Hulu a couple of months ago and couldn't get into episode 1.
Last week a good friend mentioned it as worth watching, esp season 2, so I'm giving it another try. I just binged the first 5 episodes of season 1 and am still a bit put off by the language (but that's any show these days.)
No spoilers please, but while I like what I guess is the realism of a kitchen, I'm unsure if I'm missing what the point is supposed to be? Wikipedia reports "The first season received 13 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series and acting nominations for White, Moss-Bachrach, Edebiri, Jon Bernthal and Oliver Platt.". I've chuckled at a few lines, but wouldn't describe it as a comedy.
The acting is good!

I'll keep watching into s2 so I can discuss with my friend.

While I would usually completely agree, "The Bear" is so good that IMO it doesn't really matter in this case. I could not possibly care less about chefs, I literally never eat at restaurants, tend to have little in common with people who are seriously into food and work in the industry, and the entire restaurant culture makes zero sense to me; how my wife convinced me to watch the first episode is a mystery. Nonetheless, two seasons in and IMO it is one of the best series' I've seen in a while. They make characters who I normally would not care about and have zilch in common with absolutely fascinating. It is so well done.av111 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 2:22 pmI am watching this too. Echo being underwhelmed by S1E1. On S1 E4 now. The actors are good. I also watched a few episodes of The Bear and did not get into it. Seemed a little bit try hard to me.

Looks like a lot of opinions on The Bear. I kept going into s2 so I could discuss with my friend who obviously likes it. I've watched s2 e6 last night and that's it for me. Four more episodes, I think at an hour each.
Not trying to convince anyone, just reporting my reactions. I wanted to like it, but wish I could get the time back starting with s1e1.

“The Brady Bunch” on Amazon Prime. Great memories from that show. I still recall my siblings and I watching as kids in the late ‘60’s.

It definitely seems like The Bear has mixed opinions. IMO, S2E6 is one of the best TV episodes of all time. Pure chaos. That said, if you've already invested so much time, I implore you to watch S2E7. It's a really touching piece of filmmaking IMO and almost as good as E6. No spoliers, but its not the pure chaos that E6 was just in case that's what you didnt like.heartwood wrote: ↑Thu Sep 14, 2023 1:46 pmheartwood wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 4:43 pm I tried The Bear on Hulu a couple of months ago and couldn't get into episode 1.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
One Lane Bridge (Acorn) - Season 1. We had been looking forward to watching this series because it takes place around the Glenorchy/Queenstown in New Zealand, an area we've visited multiple times. We are half-through, and true to form, the photography is spectacular, but we have mixed opinions on the series thus far. It's a detective mystery, featuring a Maori detective from Auckland taking a job in Queenstown, who appears to have this 'second sight'. He's involved with a murder investigation of a popular local sheep farmer.
The show seems to be trying to take a slow burn approach but the plot is often meandering and at times, predictable and boring. So far, for us, the main problem is that we are not identifying with any of the characters - most are in fact, are a bit repugnant with some of their actions, including the main character, or are just drawn too thinly to be of much interest.
We'll finish season 1 and see if it develops further, but I'm thinking for now we will skip seasons 2 and 3, and move on.

This is one show I ran across and stated to watch but I could see, just part way into the fist episode, I didn't want to invest the time to "get into it." Perhaps the "slow burn" was too slow for me!Barkingsparrow wrote: ↑Sun Sep 17, 2023 2:12 pm One Lane Bridge (Acorn) - Season 1. Season 2 of Wheel of Time, the huge fantasy series by Robert Jordan. I am enjoying it, but they have taken SOOO many liberties with the story I keep yelling at the tv, that’s not what happened! You have to get in the mindset of Very loosely based on the novels.

Was given the "1883" DVD set, and have watched Discs 1/2.
Think I'm done -1883 didn't hook me like the first few Yellowstone seasons did.
Elsa ain't no Beth -the storytelling using her perspective/narration turned me off.
I started using fast forward for much of the frequent extended uninteresting dialogue/narration that slowed the pace of the story vs Yellowstone.

The missus and I couldn't take it either. We lasted a few episodes into the first season and both agreed it was not worth the time for much the same reasons as yours.surfinagin wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 6:49 am Was given the "1883" DVD set, and have watched Discs 1/2.

Endeavour, on Amazon Prime with Britbox.
This ITV series (Materpiece Theater) is a prequel to Inspector Morse, covering Morse's years as a police Constable and later Detective Sergeant in Oxford, England during the 1960s and 1970s. Nine seasons with 39 episodes.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
Hi vnatale,
While in the Peace Corps on Mejit Island, I excavated 7 Japanese soldiers and sent the remains to Yasakuni Shrine in Japan. I was able to identify all the remains with the help of the islanders. Two of the soldiers were 14 and 16 years old. They had perfect teeth. One soldier had a lot of gold teeth. He died outside the hole in the ground. His chest area was all in fragments. The 6 soldiers inside the pit died from a mortar round. The two boys wanted to surrender but the master Sargent said they had to die for the emperor.
I also visited Wotje and Maloelap atolls. Thousands of Japanese soldiers starved to death on the atolls. Wotje was a seaplane tender base. Near the end of the war a Japanese ship with supplies and relief soldiers was sunk by an American sub. The two boys that died on my island were on that ship. They were transferred to Mejit because it was considered relatively safe. When I was on Wotje , I met a sailor who was on the sub that sank the ship. He was very somber and had heart problems. He said the war experience consumed him.
I had trouble imagining the war in that idyllic place. The sky is almost always blue; the coconut trees really sway in the cool ocean breezes; the locals are so friendly and welcoming.
My dad was 18 when he went to Bikini Atoll, his tug got damaged trying to tow a Japanese battle ship into the inside harbor where it would be observed in one of the many nuclear test we inflicted on the Marshallese.

"Drops of God" It's on Apple TV+. A limited series of eight episodes.
A daughter estranged from her father is notified that she is in his will, but there's a twist. Her father was a world-renowned wine critic with a collection valued at $150M. The daughter has to compete in a series of wine challenges against a favorite student of his for the inheritance.
The show is in French, English, and Japanese. So far, the locations have been pretty evenly split between France and Japan.
Even if you're not a wine geek, it's a great show. Were at the halfway mark.

Gunsmoke (1955)
We’re enjoying watching the first season of Gunsmoke from 1955. It’s in B&W of course (as there was no color TV then) with a very young Miss Kitty and Matt Dillon. Chester (Dennis Weaver) was of course in the early seasons. I enjoy his acting. He was great in Touch of Evil (1958) and Duel (1971).
We’d never seen these early years as we were too young when they were first broadcast. The stories and acting are quite good.
The screenplay of one of the episodes we watched tonight was written by Sam Peckinpah who in later years became a noted film director. We’re watching it on broadcast TV on the ME-TV network via TiVo.
The “ME” in ME-TV stands for Memorable Entertainment

The transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869. This was 1883, fully fourteen years later. The characters could've avoided all the death and mayhem by booking train tickets to the west. But in the show they said it was too expensive to go by rail so they went by wagon instead, at a snail’s pace, and by so doing faced drownings, indian massacres, snake bite, bandits, starvation, tornado, suicide, etc. And most didn't make it. But Wikipedia says rail to the west was affordable at that time. And wouldn't any price for rail tickets be preferable to what they experienced? They could've taken jobs, sold the family jewels, anything to raise enough money to go by train. But then there wouldn't be any story.
Note: I wrote this review in IMDb a while back so if you run across it, I didn’t steal it. These are my own words.
Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
"The Chosen" - a series about Jesus and his disciples. There are three seasons so far, and a fourth is coming. You don't necessarily have to be religious to watch it. Unlike typical Biblical movies and shows where everyone is always serious and devout, "The Chosen" presents the story mostly from the view of the disciples: average-at-best people who have problems, are far from perfect, who argue with siblings and spouses and each other, who struggle with what is happening in their lives, and who are excited and scared at the same time.
Jesus himself is still Jesus, but he is portrayed as a man who smiles, jokes, enjoys himself at a wedding, and yet always carries the burden of what he is going to be asked to do.
The actors all speak in regular English, not flowery phrases. Everyday life in those times, including the roles played by Romans and Pharisees, is portrayed very realistically.

8.6/10 on IMDb and 99% on Rotten Tomatoes
I'll keep watching into s2 so I can discuss with my friend.
The Bear is easily the best show I've watched in the last few years, Both seasons are fantastic. S2 Ep6 will win awards. It's an amazing episode of television.

I've watched BofB three times. It is so well done. I need to rewatch the Pacific because I only saw that once and I don't remember much.

Finished season 1 of MI5. It’s been a while.
Randomly watching X-Files episodes. It’s the 30th anniversary. And now that the government has acknowledged UAP and has black stuff from space. I don’t know what could possibly go wrong.

Watched “The Pacific” a few years ago and it was great. I’ll be watching again after BoB.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
We just started on S3 of The Morning Show on AppleTV+. I thought the first two seasons were pretty good but the current season is easily the best IMO. While I'm not typically for overly dramatic storylines, this one has been really good thus far and leans more heavily on the supporting cast than the main stars of the show. Worth watching if you liked the first two seasons.
Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
If you like it, check Band of Brothers. No story about a guy pissing himself. I prefer it.
Kinda burnt out on WWII. Happened so long ago now. Like to see more modern war movies.
Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]
I've read far more about World War II than any other war. Also, prefer seeing movies about it than any other war.
Probably because it was the last war for this country where it had enemies that also had armies, navies, air forces.
Above provided by: Vinny, who always says: "I only regret that I have but one lap to give to my cats." AND "I'm a more-is-more person."

Same here, I catch a lot of interesting historical stuff about it on YouTube, vnatale wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 8:07 pmI've read far more about World War II than any other war. Also, prefer seeing movies about it than any other war.

always learning something new and interesting about it. Can't even count the number of times I watched documentaries on Midway, D-Day etc, because each one shows it from so many different angles that you don't get tired of it. Just the massive scale of some of those battles whether on land, sea or air.
And how luck sometimes made the difference.
2nd in line for me would be the Civil War (as in US Civil War).
As a kid it was my favorite tho (didn't know much of WWII at the time).
Lot of good documentaries about it on YouTube (and PBS, History Channel etc).
Would set up some really intricate and close battles with my miniature blues and greys, along with horses and the wagons pulling cannons etc. Sometimes Lincoln would even show up on the battlefield to see how things were going!
Meanwhile the girl next door was always out there playing with her doll and probably thinking I was nuts to be playing in the dirt like that.

And just to keep it on topic (i.e. TV shows), she used to dress up like a princess (crown and all) and tell me they called her father and she's going to be on "Queen for a Day" tomorrow.
If anyone remembers that TV show from the early 60s. I think that's back when all those type of game shows first got started that have now evolved into "reality shows" and things like "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette"? (I've never watched any of that stuff tho, so can't really comment on it, but "somebody" must watch it or else it wouldn't have multiple seasons).
"We keep you alive to serve this ship. Row well...and live." Ben Hur...and The Taxman! hahaha (a George Harrison song)
