Weird: The Al Yankovic Story - didn't expect a whole lot given Weird Al tends to be pretty basic humor, but had some good reviews so I was optimistic. Definitely a pleasant surprise, even DW approved. Radcliffe was great in an interesting take on the life of Weird Al. Recommended if you are in the mood for something lighthearted and fun.

Turned out be far better than I had thought it would be from its description and how it started.

Manohla Dargis of The New York Times found the film to be "preposterously entertaining" and credited its success to Lawrence's performance, writing that "like all great stars, [Lawrence] can slip into a role as if sliding into another skin, unburdened by hesitation or self-doubt."

Maybe. Maybe not. Cannot remember!
Mostly what I remember was the beginning where he was at a high school party and they were playing polka's and he became this big thing because he could play the accordion.
I probably best remember that because I was forced to take accordion lessons from the ages of 9 year old to 15 years old and to practice six days a week. So that was a twist for me to see it being popular.

Same here. I don't re ember for sure but It was about the same ages. I wasn't so much forced as talked into it. When we moved to a diffident town at age 13 we dropped the lessons. I could play a few beginner pieces, some of which I can still plunk out (one handed) on a piano and I did learn to read music. We picked the accordion because the Lawrence Welk show was a family (well, my father) favorite.

Weird is satire. Al didn't win girls and fame in high school because he played the accordian. The whole movie is a loose-with-the-truth, tongue-in-cheek production.vnatale wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 8:30 amMaybe. Maybe not. Cannot remember!

I used to tell people if you were (100%) Italian at 9 years old you were brought down to the studio to start accordion lessons.bertilak wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 10:11 amSame here. I certainly learned how to read music. After the Beatles arrived about 3 years later I wanted to play their music but it was strictly classical music that I was taught. I never had or developed an ear for music so if I did not have the music in front of me to read I could not get past the second bar, even if I'd played it many, many times. As an adult I took some piano lessons thinking I had a head start already knowing how to read music and able to play the keys with my right hand but dropped that not long after and never went back to it.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Oh, I definitely realized that. It was just a stark contrast to my real life accordion experience. I guess the height of it was when I was 12 years old and was in a marching accordion band. We had majorettes in front, we accordion players in the middle, and drummers behind us. I seem to remember only really being in two marches until the whole thing faded away.Sandi_k wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 2:37 pmWeird is satire. Midnight Run with DeNiro and Charles Grodin. Basically Planes, Trains, and Automobiles with gangsters. I don't find myself liking many comedies, but this one was understated enough (by the standards of the genre) and the two leads are great.

I finally got around to watching The Matrix, and now I want to see every Shakespeare role that Laurence Fishburne has ever performed.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Only saw the movie The Matrix once and it was way too confusing for me. I think it required way more focused concentration than I'm usually willing to offer to a movie.

Saw it in the cinema when it came out, have seen it several times over the years, and it's still in my movie collection because I'll watch it again someday.
(I hope I did the spoiler alert correctly? I put the following text below in white and I guess when you click on it, it shows up) [See below --admin LadyGeek]
I thought it was a great story about a guy who was at one time the most famous and feared ace in WWI, but other than that, he is a miserable failure at life (on the ground).
Yet put him in a cockpit with a pair of wings to control and he's unbeatable.
And Robert Redford who didn't get to fight in that war, and who loves flying himself, idolizes him as a fighter pilot even tho he was on the enemy side. Still, he regrets having missed that war because he thinks he could have been the one to beat him, had he ever had the chance.
Then just by luck, one day they meet on a movie set, with replicas of the two planes that were in the ace's most famous battle, and the old man has heard of this young barnstormer whose career he's followed because he recognizes him as a great flyer too, so he gives the kid a chance to prove himself (no machine guns of course). But they find their own way.

The wife and I saw Jawan last week on opening day Sept 7. ( Hindi version with English subtitles ).
We like watching Shah Rukh Khan movies, this movie will not disappoint if you are a fan of SRK or Indian movies.
Like a lot of Indian movies, Jawan has several plot twists that will keep you on your game to keep-up what is going on.
This is the first time we have watched an Indian movie on opening day at a theater, the theater was full.
The opening scene and several other scenes during the movie drew applause and approval from the audience.
( I do not remember the last time watching a Hollywood movie at a theater drawing applause )

The story and emotional aspect was much better than Pathaan. It could have been much better if some extended action scenes were cut out and instead focus on the 6 girls getting to know, etc. Jawan is now the biggest BO hit in history. It passed Pathaan. I do think Dunki will the best of 2023.J9999 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 14, 2023 8:19 amThe wife and I saw Jawan last week on opening day Sept 7. ( Hindi version with English subtitles ).

He was unrecognizable to me (he's in a suit playing a square.) The scene is funnier because Ben Scotti starts mocking Al and his appearance, and the real-life Al seems to get insulted by this.

I agree with WhitePuma. It's very good.
All I can think of is "Ocean's Eleven meets Vanguard phone security". If you've ever used Vanguard's phone system to verify your voice, you'll understand why in the latter part of the movie. Sorry for the minor spoiler, but that's all I could think of. There was some borderline R-rated dialog which was hilarious.

We just watched Sneakers.
We are both surprised we missed this one. Neither of us remember even hearing about it until I read about it here.
It initially reminded me of Three Days of the Condor, where Redford previously did just about the same thing to start the movie. Apparently he likes to head out of the office for food.

[Not a spoiler; it's at the very beginning. Again.]
It was a bit lightweight due to some loose ends, but still very enjoyable.
Great cast!

Ruralavalon,
Based on your recommendation, I borrowed A New Leaf with Elaine May and Walter Matthau. The copy I had seem to have problems. First of all, the sound was terrible. Most of the time I couldn’t understand what Ms. May was saying. She was a low talker. The editing was horrible.
The movie overall was good though. I enjoy Mr. Matthau’s deadpan acting. I want to go back and see Grumpy Old Men 1 and 2. My wife hated all the plots to kill Ms. May but she liked the ending. It was telling the Mr. Matthau’s character never kissed his wife.
I’ve ordered Almost Famous for our next movie.
