Medigap Signup in New Jersey and Attaining Age of 65

Post by dfin »

My plan is to sign-up for Medicare A & B, Medigap & D this month or April with a start date of May 1. After reading the information below I wasn't sure if I had to wait until I actually turn 65 later in May for the Medigap piece. It's much cleaner if everything can start on May 1.

Thanks

When to buy a Medigap policy
The best time to buy a Medigap policy is when you’re 65 (or older) and first get both Part A and Part B. You need both Part A and Part B to buy a Medigap policy.

This is your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. You have 6 months after your Part B coverage starts to buy a policy. During this time, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state, even if you have health problems.

If you’re under 65, you might not be able to buy a Medigap policy, or you may have to pay more. This is true even if you buy a Medigap policy in the first 6 months you have Medicare.

The Medicare website is a bit of a mess on this one. (I had the exact same question as you have when I was signing up.)

I would enroll in Parts A and B immediately, to be effective May 1, so you have time to straighten out any possible bureaucratic issues.

As soon as you have your Medicare number (which hopefully should only take a few weeks), you can enroll in a Medigap plan, to be effective May 1, as well as a Part D plan.

You should then be able to have everything in place on May 1.
