New Bing [Microsoft search engine]
New Bing [Microsoft search engine]
Recently I have been using the new AI-driven Bing for searching, where the results have been way better than Google searches at finding what I was looking for. The new Bing search results go right to the information that answers the questions that prompted the search in the first place. A summary directly answers the question, complete with links to sources. The included links in the search results can be used for exploring more detailed information.
For many decades, Google was my go-to search engine as the Google search almost always turned up more relevant information than the old Bing. Now the situation is nearly the opposite, where Google is the search engine I am avoiding. I would be interested in what others think of the new Bing.

Re: New Bing
I only use Bing, to earn Micrsoft Rewards to trade in for free Amazon eGCs. If you are actually using Bing as a search engine, you should look into Microsoft rewards, you basically get paid to search on Bing.KarlJ wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 3:44 pm Recently I have been using the new AI-driven Bing for searching, where the results have been way better than Google searches at finding what I was looking for. Re: New Bing
How are you using Bing? Based on your posts I went to bing.com, signed into my outlook account, entered a request in the search box. I immediately got back results in Google. I know that's my default search engine, but seems peculiar that the bing url still defaults to google on my chromebook. I've now spent 20 minutes attempting to try Bing, and use MS rewards and I'm nowhere.anon_investor wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 4:08 pmI only use Bing, to earn Micrsoft Rewards to trade in for free Amazon eGCs. I go to https://www.bing.com and do search on my chrome broswer on my chrome book and get microsoft rewards points for those searches if I am signed in to my microsoft account. [I also do the same on my windows desktop using chrome browser and my android smart phone using chrome browser.]heartwood wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 4:24 pmHow are you using Bing? I have switched for the rewards, but miss Google (and reviews) when searching for restaurants, stores, etc.
Re: New Bing
I joined a waitlist to gain access, although news reports say the new Bing is now available to all. Here is what Bing says:
Here's what to do, according to Microsoft:
Go to Bing.com/new and sign in.
If you're already on the waitlist, you should see a big blue button that says "Access the new Bing faster." Click it.
Click "Microsoft Defaults." ...
Download the Bing app to your Android or iOS device and sign in using your Microsoft account.

When accepted to teh new BING I see Q&As. One of which says or implies I must use MS EDGE. Is that correct?
Anyone using Chrome?
Re: New Bing
News reports are that getting on the waitlist is no longer required. I did a second Bing search, this time being more specific as to what I wanted:
So you want to use Microsoft's new AI-powered Bing search engine — here's how to do it
Go to Bing.com/new in your internet browser. Microsoft / Bing
Click the blue button that says "Join the waitlist." Microsoft / Bing
To get on the list, you'll first need to login to your Microsoft account. ...
After you sign in, you should see a message saying, "Great! ...
You should see two steps. ...
The first task requires setting your default search engine to Bing. ...

Re: New Bing
I've tried all that; it's too complicated at this point and has not worked for me after following all the directions; I've essentially wasted my time. I wanted to try an AI search like write a birthday card in the style of Douglas MacArthur.
I am getting the MS Rewards even though I can't search in Bing. Explain that?
I essentially need a ELI5 (explain like I'm 5) 3 or less step procedure. I'll wait until someone at MS can make it happen.
Or here's another AI question: why isn't there a single link/button that will get me Bing AI search.

Re: New Bing
I haven't used new bing, but I have used ChatGPT which is the same underlying technology. It's way better than Google. Google cannot innovate, they are basically the new IBM, they have been deprecated.

The search is still decent. The problem is that they show way too many ads.

Re: New Bing
Google search has gotten noticeably worse over the years, likely driven by the algorithm changes that were needed to combat search engine optimization practices. I remember being amazed at what I could find 20 years ago, but now it's not even close. Often it seems to grab a few of the main terms and ignore the actual context. It works much better to restrict searches to particular sites (eg. bogleheads.org or reddit.com)
Re: New Bing
Here's what ChatGPT gave me when I asked for "write a birthday card in the style of douglas MacArthur".
"My dear friend,
On this momentous occasion of your birth, I am reminded of a quote from one of my speeches: "Age wrinkles the body. Quitting wrinkles the soul." Indeed, as you grow older, may your determination and tenacity remain steadfast, and may your spirit never waver.
Your birth is a reminder of the great potential and promise of each human being. I urge you to continue to pursue excellence in all that you do, to persevere in the face of adversity, and to strive always for the betterment of yourself and those around you.
As we celebrate your birthday, let us reflect upon the blessings of life and the gift of time. May you use this gift to accomplish great things, to make a difference in the world, and to inspire others to do the same.
With great admiration and respect, I wish you a happy birthday.
Yours in friendship,
Douglas MacArthur"
Re: New Bing [Microsoft search engine]
This is a "No politics" forum. I removed a post describing a search for a political leader's ties to another country. See: Politics and Religion
(Mentioning the politician and the situation will invite similar comments.)In order to avoid the inevitable frictions that arise from these topics, political or religious posts and comments are prohibited. The only exceptions to this rule are:
- Common religious expressions such as sending your prayers to an ailing member.
- Usage of factual and non-derogatory political labels when necessary to the discussion at hand.
- Discussions about enacted laws or regulations that affect the individual investor. Note that discussions of proposed legislation are prohibited.
- Proposed regulations that are directly related to investing may be discussed if and when they are published for public comments.
Re: New Bing [Microsoft search engine]
I've been checking out Bing because of this thread. I see people talking about rewards, and I signed up and have already earned a couple of hundred points, but what can you get for them, really? Yeah, I see Amazon gift cards and a couple of other small things, but is it possible to earn enough rewards over time to cash out for, say, a Surface laptop? Or at least get a decent credit towards purchasing one?
Re: New Bing
The default search on my Chromebook is DuckDuckGo.
In the address bar I type:
Code: Select all
chrome://settings/
Click on the "Search Engine" option, and there are several options (including Bing) available, or I can add one...

Re: New Bing
Thanks, I've tried variations of that; I've tried using MS Edge as the browser; I've also tried it on my pixel phone. No luck for me.JoMoney wrote: ↑Sun Mar 19, 2023 6:27 pmThe default search on my Chromebook is DuckDuckGo.

I did try it in ChatGPT via the https://openai.com/ site. It worked there and I got a similar response as doobiedoo, but not exactly so.
I've wasted enough effort and time trying to get BINg to work for me. It'll be google search for me for now. I don't need the chatbot!

I just got invited and accepted to the new google Bard, it's new conversational AI.
It seems to work for me out of the box.
Here's it's response to my send a birthday card to chairman mao from general macarthur.
Happy birthday card from Douglas MacArthur to chairman mao
Dear Chairman Mao,
Happy birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day filled with joy and happiness.
I am writing to you today as a former adversary and now a friend. I know that we have had our differences in the past, but I believe that we can now work together to build a better future for our countries.
I have always admired your leadership and your vision for China. You have brought your country from a state of poverty and chaos to a state of prosperity and stability. I believe that you can do even more in the years to come.
I hope that you will accept this card as a token of my goodwill. I wish you all the best for the future.
Sincerely,
Douglas MacArthur
