Not a great decade. You had some late Mozart operas (Cosi Fan Tutti, Magic Flute) in the very early 1790s but Beethoven didn’t really compose heavy hitters until the aughts. Pathetique was probably his first great piano piece and was written in 1798.

The lack of Radiohead thus far is disturbing to me :happy. Have folks really never listened to OK Computer?

Greats lists so far though. Definitely Pumpkins needs to be in the mix alongside the aforementioned AIC (Dirt), Nirvana (Bleach) and Soundgarden (Badmotorfinger) and RATM.

One of the handful of criminally underrated bands of the 90s was the opening act for the Blue Album tour. A band called Archers Of Loaf, who are coming out with their first record in like 25 years next month. Playing a few of their legendary shows too- but limited since the guys only have off for a couple of weeks from their real jobs.

“Web In Front” is one of the best songs of the 90s. (#77 on Pitchforks list- I just checked)

Absolutely! If I had to choose non hip hop albums, OK Computer would be top 5. The Bends is top 10. Others would be
U2 Achtung Baby
Beck - Odelay
Pearl Jam - Ten (already mentioned)

The best decade for hip hop fans. The 1990s are considered the golden era of hip hop that produced probably 8 or 9 out of the 10 best (hip hop) albums of all time. Top 5 are untouchable to this day.

This was part of the "Pure Moods" album with Enya and other New Age music. I can almost sing the whole commercial 20 years later.

My heavy rotation in the 90s (when I was a tween and teenager):

Albums
Smashing Pumpkins: Siamaese Dream, Mellon Collie...
Nirvana: Nevermind
Green Day: Dookie

Songs (many great one-hit wonders)
Mazzy Star: Fade into you
Better than Ezra: Good
Spacehog: In the meantime
Republica: Ready to go
PM Dawn: Die without you
Toad the wet Sprocket: All I want, Walk on the Ocean
Stabbing Westward: Shame
Prodigy: Firestarter
Shakespeare's Sister: Stay

The end of the 90s ushered in the boy band/Brittany Spears era with Backstreet Boys, N'Sync and imitators. I know the lyrics are stupid, but I still sing along to "I want it that way" when it's on the radio.

I will die on the hill that Grace is the greatest debut album of all time. Truly sad what happened to him because I'm sure he had a lot of great music to give to the world. As it is, he left an amazing piece of work.

Buckley’s cover of Hallelujah is so beautiful. It affects me as deeply as Sinéad’s cover of the Prince song that I referenced above. As for debut albums The Doors debut was shockingly good.

Yes he’s good. I didn’t realize how young he is. I saw a video once of Derek and his wife Susan Tedeschi watching a video of Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and they said “That looks like fun”. It was ten years before he was born!
