TLH today September 22 2022

Post by plutoblackhole »

Hi Bogleheads,

I am seeking a quick sanity check to make sure I'm understanding everything properly. I've TLH this year several times between VTI -> ITOT -> SCHB. Everything has been fine as I've avoided wash sales, and never TLH around a dividend date.

However today I would like to realize about $4k in losses from VTI with some of the shares bought less than 61 days ago. It looks like the Ex-dividend date for VTI is 9/23/22. (Source: https://www.vanguard.com/pdf/RTDIVDAT-r ... 8-2022.pdf page 31)

It looks like SCHB is my best choice since the Ex-dividend date was 9/21/2022. (Source: https://schwab.bynder.com/m/15dbdbecf7339e7f/)

So if I'm following the wiki correctly, this is actually the best scenario to TLH since I avoid dividends on both funds, right?

Is my understanding correct? Thank you for any insight and your time!

I believe I found the answer from an old livesoft post in 2015: viewtopic.php?p=2727301#p2727301

The Ex-dividend date does seem to be the one that matters.
