There's a local NJ chapter which meets in Princeton. Too far for me, but I believe it's called "central new Jersey" chapter.
New York City Local Chapter established
Re: New York City Local Chapter established
Hello,
Is there a NYC Chapter? If so, where and when does it meet?
If not, is there a NJ Chapter, when and when does it meet?
I live in lower Westchester and would be very happy to attend a meeting.
Sincerely,
HC

Awesome! Bruce is an outstanding resource. He knows a thing or two about estate planning.Flying Penguin wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 7:34 pm I'm excited to announce that Bruce Steiner has graciously agreed to hold a presentation on wills and estate planning at our next Bogleheads meeting. Hello Flying Penguin,
I am happy to hear there is a NYC Chapter and that you will meet on Feb 5, but I regret I will not be able to attend. I will be in Boston on that date . I will have to wait for your next meeting.
I would have dearly loved to have heard the presentation on wills and estate planning,

**ROOM CHANGE for our next meeting!**
We will now be meeting in the lower level community room, the same room we've used in the past. (The street level is the Capital One Cafe. Walk to the interior glass door along the side wall where there's a staircase to go down to the lower level.) I've updated the original post.

Sorry you can't make it! We're hoping to have a repeat session on wills later in the year.hope25 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 10:58 pm Hello Flying Penguin,

Our next meeting will be held Monday, April 6, at 6-8pm via Zoom. (Tomorrow!) I will be editing this post to provide the link shortly before 6pm. Most will see a popup and be asked to download a small program at that time which should only take a few seconds. If you want, you can download the program in advance, using the first link at this site: https://zoom.us/download. But no one needs to have a personal Zoom account or password/login.
Here is the link and password for our 6pm meeting today. Note it is Zoom branded as "Ring Central."

It worked for me no problem. I didn't register for anything. Just downloaded and installed the RingCentral app when prompted and then tried to join again.

For those that were able to participate, thanks for your time and contributions! All in all I thought it went relatively well. It's always nice to be in the same room and see your faces and shake your hands, etc. But we can't so....
Let us know if anyone has/had any particular concerns/criticisms or suggestions for later. Should we do this again?

The downloaded software did not bring up any usable prompts, I kept staring into blank screen. Was on PC Laptop, Windows 10.

I live in Westchester and would not normally come to NYC for a meeting but would be happy to attend via Zoom. I'll watch this thread for future meetings.
BTW RIngcentral downloaded its own software when I clicked on your link, and it looked different from the usual Zoom software I've been using. It also appears from a press release that they are switching to their own service instead of just using Zoom.

Hi everyone,
Please vote for the dates that work for you for our May and June virtual meetings which will be held via Zoom/RingCentral. A weeknight meeting would be held 6-8pm; a weekend meeting would be held 2-4pm. More info about the topics of each meeting below.
May: https://doodle.com/poll/r2uk6qb2a66gz2bm
June: https://doodle.com/poll/zrc4n4f4ruy4572s
May meeting: Personal finance basics for the complete novice
Sotirios Keros will present a version of an "introduction to personal finance" talk he's been giving to graduating students and early-career accumulators. The talk is designed to seed a range of important topics into a beginning audience, for self-education and future exploration. However, there is also high-yield, practical information for those who need vetted advice in order to make quick decisions.
This sample lecture will cover the following topics relatively briefly, depending on time and interest:
-- Investing fees and their impact
-- Asset allocation
-- How to conceptualize a "retirement" that may be decades away
-- Life insurance basics
-- Target Retirement type funds
-- "Warnings" about the financial services industry
-- Introduction to stocks and bonds
-- Roth vs taxable vs tax-deductible investing
The following basic personal finance topics will NOT be covered:
-- Budgeting
-- Debt management
-- Buying vs renting
-- Bitcoin
The goals for this Bogleheads lecture are:
For the novice: Provide useful education for any audience member who may be relatively early in their personal finance journey and overall understanding
For the expert: Provide an example in hopes that it will encourage others to create, modify, and provide similar education to their audience of choice
For the speaker: Provide an opportunity to get feedback in hopes of improving the lecture
For all: Stimulate discussion on a wide range of financial topics for continued learning; Pilot this format to help guide future virtual Boglehead meetings, whether for a covid or post-covid situation
June meeting: Behavioral finance
An interactive discussion on behavioral finance with potential for a TBD guest speaker.
Thanks!
Alice

Hi all,
I just finished reading the Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing and was hoping to find a local community. Alas, it seems that I’ve stumbled upon it! Would love to get involved. Is the June meet still happening?
Best regards,
David

Re: New York City Local Chapter established
Hi everyone, please vote in this poll to schedule our next NYC Bogleheads meeting. It'll be our first in person meeting in over 2 years! We're planning to have it on a Sunday at 2pm in July or early August. The location will be in Manhattan, exact location TBD. Open to suggestions for a location.
https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/bY6lPJAd
We plan to have (at least) two topics of discussion:
1) The recent market downturn & volatility
2) Discussion about the concepts in the book Die with Zero. Here is a summary: https://summaries.com/blog/die-with-zero
I recently read this book and think it would make for an interesting discussion. Some of the ideas are a bit at odds with the traditional Bogleheads frugality [e.g. the goal should be to spend (or give away) your money during your lifetime - anything left over represents time spent working unnecessarily; spend money on experiences earlier in life rather than waiting til you're older, etc]. I'll give a short summary of the key points for those who haven't read it.
Looking forward to seeing you in person soon.
Thanks,
Alice

Our next NYC Bogleheads meeting will be Sunday, October 2 at 2-4pm at the Winter Garden atrium at Brookfield Place. (https://bfplny.com/winter-garden/)
In addition to a general discussion, we hope to discuss the concepts in the book Die with Zero. Here is a summary: https://summaries.com/blog/die-with-zero

I'll give a short summary of the key points for those who haven't read it.
(Note: We did not end up having this discussion at the previous meeting since I was unable to make it.)
Hope to see you soon!
