There were lots of details that we had forgotten, or perhaps we just didn't notice when we saw it the first time.

The scene with Monica Selez and Richard Thaler explaining things at the gambling table... was that the two of them driving away together from the casino a bit later?

Anyway, it was a sobering reminder.

RM
You mean Selena Gomez? :P
I certainly do! Thanks for the catch. I've already made the correction.

And I'm not at all sure how I managed to switch names. I'm not that familiar with any of them! :confused

RM
No, it was not Gomez and Thaler driving away together from the casino, but I can see why you thought it might be.
Thanks.
We noticed it almost out of the corners of our eyes, and then the scene was gone.
We actually thought that was a cute touch. Oh well...

I finally watched "West Side Story (2021)" [recorded from an HBO free weekend in 2021]. It was terrific -- with just enough updates from the 1961 movie to give it a grittier, more realistic view and feel, e.g. Tony [Ansel Elgort] is out on parole for almost killing someone at a previous Jets rumble, and the west side of NYC is being torn down to make way for Lincoln Center.

I was impressed with Ansel Elgort's voice! I didn't know he could sing. The only song that wasn't up to my expectations was "Tonight". "Tonight" is arguably the best song in the show, but I wasn't impressed with Rachel Zegler's rendition. Her other songs were great. "I Feel Pretty", "One Hand, One Heart" duet with Elgort, "I Have a Love" were fine.

Leonard Bernstein's music and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are unequalled. Jerome Robbins's original choreography is still evident, but with athletic updates to feel more modern (even though it is still set in 1958).

I admit that losing the love-of-your-life movies/scenes are very emotional for me now that I have experienced it personally. "West Side Story (2021)" was so good that I didn't delete it from my DVR after I watched it!

We saw "Top Gun Maverick" last night and it matched our high expectations.

I just watched "Among Thieves" [2019] on Epic {free for the next few days} and it greatly surpassed my expectations.
Very well done by a non star cast, it's a heist movie with a lot of moving parts. Filmed in L.A., they did a great job of making it appear as the whole story took place in Mexico.

The Phantom of Chinatown (19940) staring Keye Luke as James Lee Wong

Keye Luke was Charlie Chan's Number One Son.
He was in dozens of movies and TV shows from 1934 through 1990. This includes 13 episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks where he voiced at least one roll. He was Master Po in the Kung Fu movie and TV series. And MANY others too numerous to mention. Everyone here must have seen him in several places.

This movie itself was nothing to write home about. Plot is about an expedition just returned from China carrying a mysterious scroll that everyone wants, including the Chinese and American governments. Several murders, one by poison, some by knife. Main murder is being investigated by a gruff LA (I guess) police captain who needs help understanding the Chinese culture.

From IMDB:
He (Keye Lule) painted the garden fairytale setting murals on the interior of Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Chinese Theater massive auditorium ceiling.

Interesting dialog:
  • Capt. Street: What's this?
Jonas: The sarcophagus from the Chinese tomb sir, that once contained the body of a Ming Emperor.
James Lee Wong: They tell me that a Chinese archaeological expedition is digging up the body of George Washington in exchange.

Hustle on Netflix, rated R, 2022. It's the basketball version of Rocky with a better plot. This was produced entirely in Philadelphia and features a ton of real NBA players. This is my home town and I'm a long-time Sixers fan. I instantly recognized the players. :beer

A few basketball legends also make an appearance. They also throw in players from other teams.

You can tell this movie was made in 2022 - and it was done before a certain controversial trade was made.

This film is required viewing for all Sixers fans. It's also not bad if you're a fan from another city. :)

I've had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with the 76ers over the last ~5yrs due to my job (my employer has a big partnership with the team). Spent a ton of time at their amazing practice facility in Camden and gotten to know a few of the players pretty well. Knowing that it is a Philly-based film, I'm definitely going to watch it.

nisiprius wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 5:42 pm The sad news of composer Vangelis' death motivated me to listen to the theme music for Chariots of Fire, and that motivated me to watch the movie again. The last time we watched it was when it came out.

It is really wonderful how movies of that era have been restored. The movie is just visually beautiful, and the "time-travelling" aspects of it--the evocation of the 1920s--is wonderful.

My wife and I had both remembered the story incorrectly. The story--being drawn from real life with reasonable accuracy--doesn't quite make movie sense. We both thought that it was Harold Abrahams who gives up his place to Eric Liddell, who had lost an opportunity to run due to his refusal to run a trial heat on a Sunday. It was someone else. Although men were British runners who competed in the same Olympic games, their lives and stories were not really closely intertwined.
One of my favorite movies. I still vividly remember watching it as a early teen when it was released in 1981. Being a history buff even at such an early age, I did feel like a "time traveler" as it did such a wonderful job of conveying the UK/Europe in 1924 (albeit from an upper class view): the optimism of the young athletes (like all young people) tempered though by the incredible losses in WW1 just 6 years earlier & the underlying fear that the UK was in decline & being overtaken by such upstarts as the USA. Incredible acting, stop-motion race scenes & of course the iconic theme music!

Hustle on Netflix: As others have said, good sports movie with a solid story and lots of great basketball. Enjoyed it.

The Valet: Got horrible reviews but we thought it was hilarious. About a valet who gets caught up in drama between a movie star and cheating husband. Stars the incomparable Eugenio Derbez.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande: We really liked this movie. About a 60s something widower who hires a male escort. Takes place mostly in a hotel room and has a few twists along the way and very good acting from Emma Thompson. Very mature theme but very well written.

Dual: Super dark comedy from the director of The Art of Self Defense. About a dying woman who decides to clone herself as a parting gift to her family and then has to duel her to the death. It is slow but parts are absolutely hilarious.

Fire Island: Movie about a group of gay friends on vacation at Fire Island in NY. Was probably too young for us but it made some good points and had some very funny parts. Stars Bowen Yang from SNL, Margaret Cho and a few other comedians. Fun movie for Pride month.

The Suicide Squad (2021)

I thought I was going to watch Suicide Squad (2016), a different movie, sort of a prequel, that has some of the same characters from the DC Comics universe. I quickly realized I was in the wrong movie. It was weird, funny, ultra-violent and gory. I could have done without the gore. Not as funny as Deadpool. Nevertheless, I found it quite enjoyable. I had no preconceived notions of what it was about, so it was pleasant to just let the film take me in whatever direction it was going.

DH and I just watched this, after reading such good reviews.

Emma Thompson is remarkable, as alwasy, but Daryl McCormack was quite something, too. What casting and what acting!
Thompson gets a lot of credit for how she played that role. The background of how the director and writer spent a week with the two of them, all together, getting used to each other, was really interesting.

I hope they all get some well-deserved awards.

The Last Duel (2021) on HBOMax or Hulu. Directed by Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck. I didn't recognize Affleck in longer blond hair until I looked at the cast after viewing.

Based on a 2004 book about a mid-1300s duel in France. Told in a Rashomon fashion the movie depicts Driver's rape of Damon's wife (Comer) in three segments from each character's perspective, with the film ending in the duel. I found the duel particularly brutal, cringing several times as they fight. The rape scenes are difficult to watch no matter who's relating the story. Not a film for the family.

Basically a movie documentary with roots from the Indian Adoption Project. Not particuarly well made as it is a low budget documentary, but a thought provoking slice of life movie.

I recently watched "The Adjustment Bureau", with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adjustment_Bureau
It's loosely based on a novel of Philip K Dick, one of my favorite sci-fi authors. I suppose you can define this movie as being a scifi-romantic comedy. Both the sci-fi and the romantic aspect are quite enjoyable.

I've seen "The Adjustment Bureau" several times on DirecTV. Very enjoyable. I don't think I have ever been disappointed by Emily Blunt in a role.

Like many sci-fi stories, "Adjustment Bureau" takes a far-out, off-the-wall "magic/tech" advancement and builds a story around it. In this case, the "magic" is "hats" that let the wearer use doors to teleport across blocks in NYC. And the story is the age-old boy-meets-girl romance with someone (God's master plan) trying to stop them.

I watched "Marry Me" (Owen Wilson, Jennifer Lopez) and "The Valet" (that great Spanish guy whose name I forget).
The former was exactly what you'd expect. You already know how the plot goes from beginning to end. Not a complicated movie. Fun though. If you're looking for something light. Definitely not a deep movie. The Valet? Meh. I like the Spanish guy and thought I'd like the movie enough just because of him but it wasn't very good.

Looking to watch the Nicolas Cage movie (The Unbearable...) ... that looks good. I saw a similar Jean-Claude Van Damme movie (Jean Claude Van Johnson) which was fantastic and highly recommended. Actually I think it was a series. Great show. Wish it never ended.

I liked it, but if you're at all offended by strong language or raunchy situations/jokes, do not go there.
But if you’re not offended by raunchy jokes, go there. Very funny.
I'm not offended by raunchy jokes. I went there. I only lasted about 15 minutes before I switched it off. Didn't think it was funny at all.

Looking forward to Elvis this weekend.

Jerry and Marge Go Large on Paramount+.

It won't win academy awards. It is the quality of what used to be called "made for TV" movies.

That said, it was a short, light-hearted story based mostly in facts, with some typical dramatic filler added in.

With so much doom out there, it was time well spent getting a few smiles and not worrying about some dystopian end of the world ending. :D

Saving Mr. Banks, from Netflix on blu-ray.

This is a movie about the behind-the-scenes drama of the movie "Mary Poppins". Earlier this year we saw the Erie Philharmonic play the soundtrack along with the movie, and after the performance I went home and read about it and from there found out about this movie. I enjoyed it.

Hustle on Netflix, rated R, 2022. It's the basketball version of Rocky with a better plot. This was produced entirely in Philadelphia and features a ton of real NBA players. This is my home town and I'm a long-time Sixers fan. I instantly recognized the players. :beer

You can tell this movie was made in 2022 - and it was done before a certain controversial trade was made.

This film is required viewing for all Sixers fans. It's also not bad if you're a fan from another city. :)
My wife REALLY loved this movie when we watched last night. I thought it was great! Thanks to this thread! Tonight would have been operation Mincemeat from this thread, but spending some time reading and catching up on sleep instead.

Hustle was Very good - thanks for the recommendation!

"Tenet" was very good. It's a Christopher Nolan sci-fi film that was released in 2020 to movie theaters despite the Covid shutdown. Consequently not many people saw or even heard about it.

The premise is that time can flow both ways and entropy can be inverted, e.g. instead of firing a bullet from a gun, an inverted gun "recaptures" the bullet from the target. I know, this is hard to understand in words. You have to watch the movie. And it's not a variation of "Inception", which also manipulated time.

BTW, Christopher Nolan's filmography is very impressive. Memento, Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet.

To each their own. Once the movie gets past introducing the joke, it gets into what I found to be very interesting perspectives on humor and society. The differences in the way the joke is perceived and told by the best (or most successful) comedians also is interesting. Some were apologetic, others more diffident. Those aristocrats out there are no better than anyone else, and in fact might just be a whole lot worse.

It was pretty good. It is a very thick movie that is not easy to understand because of the odd physics. I need to do a rewatch soon.

You probably don't want to bother with the new "Beavis and Butthead Do The Universe" (Paramount+) unless you want very few laughs, and way too much cringe. It is a good way to waste a lot of time.

You know it will be crude. My problem was that it was one-track crude. At least when the series was out, they could vary some of the crude. This one went down one long path of nonsense. Also, no music video breaks. I thought they'd fit one in. Nope. I found only one of the "situations" really funny (Gender studies in 2022). That's the thing, if Judge could have somehow put in more tension with them being in 2022, it would have had more laughs. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the writing to make that happen.

But I guess one track crude is what you should expect from these guys.

I think the original version (named Unforgiven) is available on Britbox. Imo, it’s better, but YMMV.

It's a real mind bender with an extremely complex plot involving odd happenings during a close pass by a comet. I enjoyed it, but found it a bit of a chore to watch. Had to pay very close attention and put my thinking cap on to figure out what was going on. :D
Coherence, free on Amazon Prime, not rated, drama / mystery / sci-fi. Strange things happen at a dinner party when a comet passes by. Mind-bender, indeed. This movie is constant dinner chatter and you need to pay attention. It's an indie film on a low budget, but you would never get that impression. When you have a plot that works, there is absolutely no need for special effects.

This movie has a very creative twist to a common sci-fi theme. I don't want to describe it, as that will give some of the plot away. All I'll say is that when they finally figured out what was going on, I started laughing when they tried to explain it. (I have a strong science background.)

The movie is actually more of a mystery / drama with a sci-fi plot and there's lots of suspense. It had my full attention to the very end.

This movie won several awards for a reason. I'm surprised it's not more popular. Recommended.

I have pretty much sworn off movies involving time travel. Too many paradoxes. Except for the Back to the Future movies, but they aren't serious sci fi. :D

I watched the LA Lakers play the Milwaukee Bucks recorded on Feb 8, 2022. In the 1st qtr, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Malik Monk collide [side-to-side] while both are going for a rebound. Monk gets bounced away about 6 ft! Giannis gets the easy bucket after the offensive rebound. I thought Giannis must have pushed off and the refs missed it. I backed it up and watched it 3 times -- the last time I went frame by frame. There was no push-off! I was amazed but thought well, Monk isn't that big. He's kind of thin. I guess it's possible.

In the 4th qtr, LeBron James and Giannis both go for an errant pass. They also bump each other. This time it is LeBron who winds up 2 ft away and off balance! For those who don't follow basketball, LeBron James is big and has a terrific muscular body. I have never seen that happen to LeBron James! Giannis must be all hard-packed muscle!
