47, AA is 80/20. Planning on scaling back at age 50 (hopefully), 5 years from planned retirement, to progressively reach 60/40 upon retirement (at 55).

I do not have a pension, but I did buy $100K worth of immediate annuities 3 years ago which gives us about $800 a month guaranteed. That is not included in the above allocation.

I wrote the above in 2015. Today, (2021), I turned 88. I have today a bit different allocation, 30% stocks, 66% bonds and 4 % cash. i didn't re-balance, obviously. (CDs are gone, but I Bonds continue to grow). I continue to live off that and SS. I donate more now to groups in need. Spending, including donations, is up about 10% from 2015.. My savings total, though is up 14% from then.
I didn't realize the change in this period until I calculated this. Ignorance is, indeed, bliss. :happy

52 and 50 y/o

60/30/10 and that's where we plan to stay forever, unless something changes which makes it hard to sleep at night then we might drop to 50 stocks. (Some of the 10 is in I-bonds so it's not truly cash, wish we could get all of it into them.)

Age 65. 2:1 stocks to bonds. Actual 50 stocks, 25 bonds (mostly TIPS), 25 alternatives and real estate.

A modest pension and future generous SS balance the relatively small bond allocation. And the alternatives and real estate investments have provided a very steady 10%+ return through the last two bear markets.

Here's a similar thread that started only a year ago (not six years ago), and ran to 15 pages (not a mere 7 pages):

What is your age and asset allocation?

Here's an update on my post in that threadd:

Me: age 67 and retired; 61% stock and 39% fixed income (including cash).
Wife: age 72 and retired; 23% stock and 77% fixed income (including cash).

Combined: 39% stock and 61% FI.
It's "Roth", not "ROTH". Senator William Roth was a person, not an acronym.

I'm 71 and currently 75/25. As it is looking more and more likely we will be able to maintain a healthy cash flow with our state retirement, SS and soon-to-be RMD we will most likely increase to 80/20 to leave perhaps more money for our children. Currently sitting on $1.45 MM - no debt. House and rental are paid off. Not bad for a retired NC teacher...

Glad the poster did resurrect. It's an interesting question; no less interesting now than 6+ years ago.

Thanks JC Denton!
Actually I don't think it's interesting because it doesn't account for countless other variables. For example, someone being 50/50 at age 50 might be somewhat expected/reasonable for a balance of $2M. Well it would have been in 2015, before all the "why not 100% stocks???" sentiment. But 50/50 at 50 with $200M? Not your typical choice.

80/20 stocks bonds

I always thought 60/40 is where I'd end up but I've stuck to 80/20 through some rough times and I think maybe it's for good.

For this to be more meaningful, I would like to see the following:

Ratio stocks/bonds
Age
What percent of expenses post retirement will come from pensions/SS

We are 60/30/10
52 and 50 y/o
And about 65 percent of expenses should come from SS at 66, but we want to retire at between 58 and 60 (depending on how things go) so need to bridge that gap

If all expenses were projected to come from SS/pensions, we would probably be more aggressive right now.

Age 35. Had bonds for a couple years but sold them the other day as the real returns were negligible and I'm not risk averse. I only had them because I read that having 5% bonds could give you higher performance than 0%. Now I'm 95% stock and 5% a combination of precious metals and a thing that cannot be mentioned on this forum. About 110% stock if you count the leverage from the mortgage.

About 15% of my stock is international, which I plan to dial up, decreasing Chinese exposure and increasing Japanese.

Age 53, 94% stocks and 6% cash. My "bonds" are two rental properties that generate income, an investment I'm receiving over 6 more years for a business I sold, and social security. I do plan on switching to bonds once I reach retirement age in another 5 years or so.

For most of my "investing career" I was happy with 50%-60% equities. It was a, "Let's make sure we have enough and not lose a whole lot kind of mindset". These days we have well more than enough and no need to take any risk.
It is always easier to invest with "other peoples money".

Dale
Well said. If you need the money at or around retirement, go down in equities so that a bear market doesn't ruin it all for you.

After that, from 70-80, slide back up if you want to invest for heirs.

It is what it is. I just plan for lower returns, for both bonds and stocks. I’m on track to meet my goals with lower returns, so there’s no need to take on more risk than I’m comfortable with.

Good outlook. As someone in a similar position, my gut says I should take some chips off the table but my mind is having a difficult time shifting (more) to bonds at 33 YO - particularly given the current outlook & the duration til retirement.

Anywho, had no intention to hijack this thread so back to the OPs question.

58/56, 65/30/5 S/B/C, + ~ 25k physical silver, + 50% interest in one small commercial property. Wife finally retired last September and I checked out 11 years ago. Moved to Santa Fe almost 11 months ago from ATL, all good so far, don't miss the traffic and humidity of ATL at all, but do miss the proximity of Braves games from the old house. Our 3 dogs love it out here, and bobcats, bears, coyotes, etc are abundant. It's amazing how small the humming birds are here compared to the east coast and let's not forget the abundance of chile.
