$50k where to invest now!

Post by awdesign »

Thanks to this group all great discussions and advice.
- I have $50k cash
- Moderate risk
- Don’t need it for the next 10-15 years
-Taxable account
- Age 64

I have Vanguard and TDAMERITRADE accounts

Where would you invest if you are in the same position?
Thanks

I'll be investing with vanguard. For moderate risk, I'll buy Vanguard Target Retirement 2045 Fund (VTIVX). I'll will start with 3000. Then I'll add 1000 every day OR 2000 on market down day.

For that time frame and taxable, I’d do VTSAX or VTWAX if you don’t mind the paperwork. I’m too lazy to DCA a lump sum, but it’s probably best. Over 10-15 years it’s unlikely to make a huge difference.

I’m 59 and retired. I like to schedule the stock purchases and ignore the market. That works best for me. I continue to invest new money to my normal asset allocation. In my case, the three fund portfolio. Nothing wrong with the previous fund suggestions though.

Just so you know, dollar cost averaging (DCA) ie putting in smaller portions over time is mathematically a losing strategy.... The only reason to do it is for psychological hedging. Which is a legitimate need for some people, and that's okay. But it's essentially a form of market timing and less likely to increase your returns.

I'd put 100% of it into VTI today. But that's for my financial picture. I don't know your whole financial picture so I can't really say.

Edit: I just saw you made your choice. Good on you, and congrats on the $!

I know that you already decided but just wanted to give you some support that you made the right decision.

If you’re holding for 10-15 years, the price point at entry between now and a dip is seriously negligible. Flash crashes like COVID rarely happen. The next downturn will IMO not even be a downturn but a “reduction of growth” due to interest rates rising to combat inflation, which I’m guessing is already somewhat priced in as the worst kept secret. No point trying to time anything here.

I’m about to get 225k from a house sale and my horizon for needing is 5 years. I’ll be investing half in a 529s, rest in My taxable @ AA, immediately.
