Podcast - Jack Brennan on Succeeding the Legendary John Bogle

Post by Stinky »

The most current version of the "Masters in Business" podcast series with Barry Ritholtz is an interview with Jack Brennan, who following John Bogle as CEO of Vanguard. It's an interesting listen. https://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp ... 1619224131

Brennan has a new book out. The podcast touches on some of the items that I expect are covered in the book. There's also a recent thread on the new book: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=346663

This was a good listen! Brennan is very well spoken. I want to pick up the book.

I’ve just been listening to the podcast. About 43-45 minutes in, he discusses his view on the current investing environment. He actually says he thinks the 60/40 portfolio is challenged due to the end of a “700 year long” (70 in US) bull market in bonds. He advocates higher equity allocation. When Barry brings up how more senior investors may want to be cautious, he says “I’m 67, my family has a history of longevity, so I have a 30 year horizon.”

Roughly, Brennan — who was CEO of Vanguard — is saying this time is different, and we should hold high equity allocations for a longer time.

Interesting comments on how to generate income in low interest rate environment.

His answer, dividends.

So that's Jack Bogle AND Jack Brennan who like dividends for income.

Interesting, very interesting. Confirmation bias at work.

Also liked his live below your means comment.

Interesting comments about indexing leading to more shares concentrated into fewer hands like vanguard and being able to work closely with business executives on longer term plans rather than short term wall st thinking

DIVIDENDS DO MATTER! At least in my house! I have family and friends retired from dividends from total market index funds. They live from those dividends. Real life examples right in front of me.

My goal each year: Build the passive income stream even higher!

Best.

Jack Bogle, in his interviews and articles, referred to “income risk” as a known risk for retirees. He would say retirees have bills to pay and want cash to enjoy. “Go out to your mailbox and get those dividend checks”.

Thank you Mr. Bogle.

That's what I've been preaching forever. To me, it's the most important lesson one has to learn and implement if they want to be financially independent. Regardless of how much money you make, if you spend it all (or even more) instead of living below your means, you won't have any money left to save and invest. Rather simple but extremely important lesson, isn't it?

Sometimes the obvious needs repeating.

This reminds me of a passage from Morgan Housel's recent book "The Psychology of Money" in which the pop singer Rhianna's financial advisor was quoted as saying "Was it really necessary for me to explain to her that if she spends her money on things, she'll have the things and not the money."

Regards,
This is one person's opinion. Nothing more.

I finished the Podcast. Excellent program.

I could it interesting that Jack Brennan said a 60/40 portfolio will be challenged. He also recommends dividends for a portfolio.

Wow! Both Jack Bogle and Jack Brennan recommend dividends!
