TSP G Fund rate 1.375% (March 2021)

Post by mokaThought »

(thread title updated)

I was looking at doing something with the yields on my bond side. Lo and behold, TSP G Fund rate shot up from 0.875% to 1.125%. F Fund's SEC yield is presumably 1.18% since it's based on the same index as AGG.

Awesome! Almost keeping up with inflation now!

Now I know this is the very safest part of my portfolio, but it would be nice to at least double once a lifetime.

I had this impulsive feeling just before the recent 10-year treasury bill spike that I should go 100% G Fund rather than 50/50 between G and F but ignored it. Still trying to ignore it. Market timing bad. :P

Well, per the Rule of 72, you just have to hang on another 52 years or so....

I have access to a G Fund. Is this a better idea than total bond in this environment?

The TSP G Fund is a very specific instrument that isn't publicly available.

Is it better than total bond? Sure if capital preservation is paramount for your circumstances. Likely less so if you horizon is 45 years out. But of course that determination would require a lot more information..

Sweet! Intermediate bond yields and money market risk.

I have heard that bond funds continue to bring lower and lower yields due to current conditions? We still have maybe 15-20 years to retirement.

In that case, yes, I’d stick with G over F.
