Sometimes this thread cracks me up. How has it gone on forever with recommendations a mile wide and an inch deep? "It held my interest." "I don't recommend." Really!

And would it kill you to include a link to the trailer of the movie? For instance, I too liked The Vast of the Night, and here is the trailer:

See? It isn't hard!

Gattaca, on DVD, PG-13, 1997. A sci-fi drama where genetics matter. An interesting plot, but I thought it was slow in spots. It was OK. I think I liked it better the first time around (when the DVD first came out).

Just finished Foyle's War last night. The acting was superb.
And the last episode, "Elise", included something about these "lady spies", so this is quite timely.

And... we just watched the Queen's Gambit.
I thought some of the acting very early was a bit stilted, but then... it was first class all the way.
It was interesting to know a bit about chess, but not necessary. It did help at least to look up "Queen's Gambit", however, if one didn't already know.

We were very sorry to see both of them end.

Some really great suggestions here - thanks!
They've all really helped us through the tension about the election recently.
These good ones really captured our attention, and we were "there" with the characters, not "here" while watching :happy

I always say that I strongly dislike science fiction, but that the only sci fi film I enjoyed is Gattaca.

I thought the cinematography for The Queen's Gambit was exceptional especially the scene when Beth enters the Las Vegas hotel.
Episode 3 around minute 23.

My Octopus Teacher on Netflix.

A documentary filmmaker experiencing a mid-life crisis spends a year observing (and filming) an octopus in the wild.

The visuals are stunning, the filmmaker's narration is thought-provoking. I'm going to watch it again, and maybe again after that.

Quicksand (1950) Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre, Jeanne Cagney (Jimmy’s sister), & Jack Elam in a bit part.

After taking twenty dollars from his employer to go on a hot date with plans to repay it the next day, an auto mechanic falls into increasingly disastrous circumstances for more and more money which rapidly spirals out of his control.

A delightful “B” film noir, and actually well done. Unintentionally funny, I was laughing through the whole film. It was fun to watch Mickey interacting with the masterfully slimy Lorre. A word to the wise to anyone contemplating petty embezzlement! Well worth my time. Recommended.

I streamed it on the Sci-Fi Collection on Roku. (The film is not sci-fi).

AMAZING. Almost unbelievable.

Watched Wind River yesterday. Murder investigation on a Wyoming reservation. Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, and Graham Greene. One of the few movies I've actually purchased on Amazon Prime. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5362988/

This morning, I watched Jesse Stone: Stone Cold(2005): Free on Prime now. Stars Tom Selleck as a former big city detective, now a small Mass police chief investigating a series of murders and other stuff. Despite a couple of inaccuracies in the way things are handled, it's pretty good. Then again, Thomas Magnum and Frank Reagan usually does cop stuff well. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431420/

It's pretty good. It is a bit confusing how they strung about 3 years into one tour. Keating was killed in 2006, and the Kamdesh shindig didn't happen until 2009. The Troop CP looked realistic. The one shot only 120, not so much. I'll watch it again.

While this is a bit death blossomy, this is a typical 120 suppression mission. 6 minute video-adult language warninghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o65nB1J4sPI

Holidate, on Netflix.

This is a made for Netflix romantic comedy. It is completely frivolous (This is a compliment, we like completely frivolous.) Two singles tired of being alone, or single at family functions, on holidays agree to a platonic relationship being the date for each other for every holiday. Of course it doesn't stay non-romantic.

Another Man's Poison (1951) Bette Davis, Gary Merrill, Emlyn Williams

A mystery writer becomes involved in a tangled web of murderous deception not unlike the plots of her novels.

Not the best but I enjoyed it. I like Bette Davis but my wife says she overacts. Set in a dark English country house with some outdoor scenes in the Yorkshire moors. Recommended.

We streamed it on Roku.

Much Ado About Nothing, on Amazon Prime.

This is a romantic comedy based on a play by WIlliam Shakespeare. The movie stars Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh, and Kate Beckinsale and features Denzel Washingtin, Keanu Reeves and Michael Keaton. A very good movie.

A fantasy based on a William Shakespeare play. The 2012 movie version stars Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Everett, and Calista Flockhart. I recommend this movie.

White Lightning and its sequel, Gator.
DVR'd off of TCM. Early Burt Reynolds films.

White Lightning was his first film after Deliverance. Very dark, with several different "adult themes" in play, but rather good. It ends rather abruptly and somewhat unsatisfyingly. It's the only time I've seen Ned Beatty as a really bad guy (Lex Luthor's assistant hardly counts.) The Director was also Burt's stunt double.

Gator took the same character to a different level. And not a good one. Burt Reynolds was the director and it seemed rather self-serving. The show is all over the map - mostly comedy and crime thriller, by turns love story, and somewhat boring. But I can empathize a little with the giant who has to drive with his head poking out of the sunroof of a car.

Both films have plenty of hulking 1970s Detroit iron churning up the roads. Awesome.

Both films indulge too much in negative Southern US stereotypes, but also inspired The Dukes of Hazard TV show, and the movies Smokey and The Bandit and Hooper, which are much more positively oriented and entertaining. It's interesting to have now finally experienced the whole arc.

Scarlet Street (1945) Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, directed by Fritz Lang.

When a man in mid-life crisis befriends a young woman, her venal fiancé persuades her to con him out of the fortune they mistakenly assume he possesses.

This is a good film noir with good acting all around. I like Edward G. and I’d never seen this one. Dan Duryea is an Eddie Haskell-like slimeball. Recommended. I streamed it on Roku.
