Parent DOB Error on Birth Certificate

Post by DTalos » Thu Jul 30, 2020 4:40 pm

My birth certificate has the wrong date of birth for one parent. How critically important is it to have this changed?

I have only needed a birth certificate once in my life and that was not for a US inquiry. I didn't even have one until I had the need (age 50). I doubt this matters.

If it is importent to you it is likely possible to file an amendment to your birth certificate. As long as the parent has their own birth certificate I don't think it matters much how it's shown on yours.

I have a certified copy of my one parent's birth certificate which is the ultimate proof of their DOB.

I would have this amended. In many states it is not a difficult procedure (you would likely need to provide a certified copy of the parent's birth certificate, and likely the marriage certificate, if there is one, as evidence that it is indeed the same person, or something similar).

My opinion reflects an experience in which a different, but minor, error created a substantial delay in a government administrative proceeding (essentially requiring the collection of other evidence that the parent was the same person), which would have been unnecessary but for the error.

I find these sorts of things easier to fix sooner than later ... Never know when you might need it, and need it to be correct .

Honest question, but how does this error affect you?

Or even the parent at issue?

It has never affected me or the parent personally. I don't know how it could, hence my original question.

100% get this fixed asap.

We went through a 6 month immigration nightmare over exactly this issue. Had to try and fix a 40 year old document issued by a hospital that no longer exists in a country that no longer exists. Just because dates didn't match across documents.

You may think you may never need to immigrate anywhere but so did they. Beyter to fix now.

Could you just treat the birth certificate as if it were the real DOB?

It could be that the actual record is correct and a mistake was made when the certificate was created for you. 40 years ago I got a birth certificate from Pennsylvania Vital Statistics with my DOB wrong. I corresponded with them and they assured me the record was correct and provided me a corrected certificate.

Actual record is incorrect regarding one parent's DOB.

Birth certificates from many states do not include the parent's dates of birth. You mention it has never affected you...have you been able to use that birth certificate to obtain a social security card? A driver's license? A passport? A marriage license? Enroll in school? Any difficulties?

I personally wouldn't be concerned about it, but if it concerns you then by all means see about getting it corrected.

I've only used for my birth certificate once and that was to get a trusted ID driver's licence. I could have used other forms of ID but I had it so used it. My certificate, issued in a state far away and long ago, does not even have parent's birth dates, only age at my birth.

It's it's easy to amend you can do it, but it's high unlikely to ever matter.

No. I noticed the incorrect DOB immediately, mailed Vital Statistics a letter and they replied with written confirmation the record was correct along with a corrected certificate after a week or two. It all happened 40 years ago.

Ah, it was not your first birth certificate. I found out in my 20s that what I had been using as a birth certificate was only a hospital certificate. I had never needed my birth certificate until then. Fortunately, I was easily able to order a new one online.

One word of caution as the owner of an amended birth certificate. Once it is amended, any copies requested must go through the state and takes a lot of time to obtain versus getting one from my county of birth. At least that is how it works in my state.

Personally I wouldn't do anything. Any request for your birth certificate is just to verify your birth place, name or age. No one will be concerned about your parent's birth date and if they were, they would be requesting your parent's birth certificate, not yours.
