Access to cabin blower fan for 2003 Ford Ranger

Post by dodgy55 » Thu May 21, 2020 4:17 pm

Turned on my cabin blower fan this morning and there was this annoying rattling sound, like a bunch of leaves were in the fan blades. Thought it was an easy job to pop off the glove box and remove the air filter to see if there was any obstructions. Come to find out, this model Ranger does not have a cabin air filter. Has any Bogleheads had a similar experience and if so what the cause may be? Is this a DIY project or bring to a garage project?

There's a ton of YouTube videos available on getting to the blower fan if you Google "2003 ford ranger blower motor"

Those might help determine how you want to proceed.

Posting a question like that here is like asking which dishwasher to buy in an automotive forum. If you haven't asked already, try:

And it looks like it’s a real pain - it’s under the hood in the back left corner as you face the car and you can’t really get it out without taking a bunch of stuff out in front of it:

My first choice is always to go to You Tube no matter what my DIY project is. However, I have been to You Tube and most of the videos has to do with replacing the air filter under the hood. I am looking to fix the rattling noise in the cabin blower fan. Just about all the videos show the cabin air filter located behind the glove box. My Ranger does not have that configuration. I have been to other internet sites and they usually want me to buy the repair manual. Not happening at this time. I will research the sources provided by atikovi. Thanks for the help

Actually it just looks like a couple of things that are easy to get off. I'd try just taking the fan out as is shown in the video. There may be leaves or something in it as you suspect or it may need to be replaced. Either way it doesn't look like a big deal.
IGNORE the noise!

Buy the manual, fix the fan, and keep driving 'er. These are easy to work on. I love my Ranger (of similar vintage). She's coming up on 200,000 miles with hardly a stutter.

Good idea. You can get to the fan and remove it from the housing; you just can’t get it completely out of the vehicle. If there’s just something caught in there such as leaves, that’s probably enough.
