Should I buy a new rice cooker from Zojirushi?

Hi,

We eat brown rice almost daily and currently the rice cooker used is rather simple : https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NHS-18 ... 00004S576/.

However, I wanted to explore whether it's worth buying a https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-TSC ... DG6C/?th=1


The current cooker is okay, but the brown rice doesn't always turn out to be nice. Not sure if a better machine with "brown rice setting" will make any difference? Has anyone been through this upgrade and can share their experience? thx bubba

I've had a version of the older rice cooker you linked and I currently have the one you are considering. I don't eat brown rice often but when I have it cooks it wonderfully.

Yes. Well worth it.

I have an almost 20 year old Panasonic smart rice cooker with a variety of settings, including brown rice. Has served me well since college and still going strong. I wouldn't make rice without it and I also use it as my crockpot.

If I could have afforded the Zojirushi you link at the time I bought it I would have. They were then and are still excellent machines.

We've had the same rice cooker (Tiger) for 20 years and it's still going strong, but we usually eat jasmine. However, I've had a Zojirushi bread maker for close to 20 years too and I love it. It gets used often and is very high quality. I have nothing but good things to say about the brand.

@RM, we use our Zojirushi for steel cut oats. 1 part oats, 2.5 parts water. Use the “Steel Cut Oats” setting (duh :D ).

It takes about an hour. No stirring while it’s cooking, but I give it a quick stir when I open the cooker up before serving.

Yes. I cook brown rice in mine often. It does it right every time. The brown rice cycle is about 100 minutes but the timer works well to get the rice done at a specific time.

Instant Pot takes about 30 min. Set and forget (locks when at pressure, so can't peek/stir/meddle. epitome of set and forget!)
Same 1:2.5 ratio of steel cut oats:liquid (water, soy milk, oat milk, etc).
3-5 min setting Manual on InstantPot.
Takes 5 min to come to pressure, 3-5 min cook time, then 15-20 min natural pressure release.

Costco has a huge sack of steel cut oats if you can use it.

Wow, that's a long time for me to go hungry. :? My current Zojirushi rice cooker (the very simple one with on button only) takes around 20min to cook the rice.

100min for brown rice, does that mean you need to get used to plan ahead for meals? any thoughts on the power consumption?

How do you guys manage the pot? Mine is basically not usable anymore after 2-3 years due to scratches and damaged surface in general. Do you just buy a replacement?

Brown rice needs a little more water. Try that first. I have the model you are thinking about getting, but I wish I had the first model you already have. All I use it for is to cook rice, so a lot of the extra features go unused. And the first model looks way easier to clean and takes up less counter space.

thx for sharing, and yes I read somewhere that adding some more water for brown rice is recommended. Since then it has improved a little or at least the rice ain't that hard/corny anymore. :sharebeer

Just like in investing, keeping things simple may be the best way. :happy

Besides Zojiruchi, Cuckoo and Cuchen rice cookers are worth a consideration. Both Cuckoo and Cuchen have pressure cooking settings which are good for cooking brown rice.

We got that zojirushi rice cooker as a gift. It's awesome, the rice is always perfect. We had used the cheap $20 dollar ones for a long time prior. No comparison.

In addition to brown vs. white rice, it is also important to add more water for long grain rice.

And use a small batch in your “test kitchen” to figure out the optimal amount of water to add.

Zojirushi is a well known high quality brand. However, there are many other brands of rice cookers that can do a good job at lower prices.

We've had a small Zoji for 11 years and we make brown rice weekly. I would definitely buy one again if ours "died".

Just FYI, there are two ways to cook brown rice on a stove.

1) Typical 2 parts water, one part rice, cook until all water is absorbed. I used this for years and I frequently had problems with this since it would often stick to the pan or there would be water that was left. I tended to avoid using brown rice just because it often did not turn out well.

2) Excess water method. More like cooking pasta, 6 parts water, one part rice. Bring water to a boil first, add rice, cook for 30 minutes, drain well, cover and let steam for 10 minutes, fluff with fork. The only problem I have ever had was if I did not fully drain the rice.

Once I started using the excess water method it was easy to cook brown rice on a stove. If you were not already cooking brown rice that way you might try it. You may decide that you do not need a rice maker for brown rice.

Eat Brown Rice daily, every meal.
I've used the first one on your list and similar models for 40+ years and they work without fail.
10 cup size. Also a Panasonic version.

The huge variant is how the rice is cooked. And, especially, how long it sits after the clicker/switch pops up. If it has time to steam and rest then the rice will be fuller and moister, if too long and the rice dries out. Brown rice is trickier than white rice.
And, when the clicker pops ups, the rice pot is still on warm which can dry the rice out.
And, the ratio of water used. And, the type of brown rice. From 2 cups water to 1 cup rice (drier) to 3 cups water to 1 cup rice (moist).

What I do:
I use a plug in basic timer so that the rice cooker stays on the "warm" setting no longer than 20-40 minutes after the clicker pops up. I cover the lid with a thick cotton cloth so there's no spatter on the counter and also helps keep steam in.
Ratio: is 1 cup rice to 2.75 cups water or a tad more since I like moist rice. (vs more fluffy, chewy)
If too moist then extend the "sit time" after the clicker clicks.
Some folks say to soak the rice overnight or many hours before cooking. Results vary. I tended to keep it simple.

My son and relatives and friends have the second rice cooker you linked which steams and is sealed up. Most folks in Hawaii eat white rice vs brown. And, nearly everyone there eats rice with every meal. A must. And, the Zojiruchi products are very popular. Results are very consistent and nice.

Why not try an upgrade. Well worth a perfect bowl of rice.

I am Asian and eat rice (white, brown) often. I had always used a standard rice cooker like your first model. Recently, my brother's family has been staying with me, and they have the high-end Zojirushi machine. I've been blown away by how delicious that precision-cooked rice can be. White, brown, congee, steel cut oats... No exaggeration, the best rice I've ever had in my life (we're talking 50+ years of eating rice, here). Taste, texture. My SIL can fill it before bed, and we have hot congee or steel cut oats waiting for us in the morning.

Needless to say, when they return to their own place eventually, I will be buying my own machine ASAP!

Rice cookers do an amazing job and definitely are worth it.

If you already have an Instapot and want one less kitchen gadget, they do a great job too. (But they do require a manual release of steam, which isn't as convenient if you're cooking on a time delay.)

Never owned a rice cooker, but almost all our cooking is done with the pressure cooker or crockpot: meats, oat groats, quinoa, baked potatoes, you name it. It's almost idiot proof. We almost never eat rice, but bought some as part of our COVID food hoarding; worked great in the crockpot.

The kind with a non-stick finish?

Ours is 10 years old and like new. Never use metal utensils, never use a metal scrub pad, and never put in dishwasher. I would try to find a replacement pot.

I suspect that 100 minutes includes starting with a period of time to let the rice soak first, and ends with a steaming cycle, with the goal of perfectly cooked rice. My Zojirushi does that, but also has a quick cook option that excludes those steps, which halves the cooking time. Still, my cooker's "long" cycle for rice is about 45 minutes, not 100.

We have a zoji and swear by it! But I think the biggest difference in rice cookers is between the simple on/off cookers, and the ones that use 'fuzzy logic' or whatever term they use. Ours was about $70 at bed bath and beyond (wedding present), and, as far as I can tell, cooks brown rice just as well as our FIL's who has a very high end version. Ours just has four cooking settings instead of 12 or whatever, and fewer other bells and whistles.

We have what looks like the exact model you are considering.

Plus: Makes great rice, every time.
Can be set in the morning to have rice ready for dinner.

Con: Ours uses a small lithium battery (for the timer, etc). When it dies, the battery has to be replaced at the factory. We had to send it in to have the battery replaced after some years. We got it back in a few weeks and it's been trouble free since.

Overall it' have been a great buy, but that battery replacement was annoying.

Ah yes, I am well familiar with that attitude! It's why I still have an iPhone 6... :D We haven't tried making brown rice congee but I am sure it would work. Sounds delicious!

We got one about a month ago and really enjoy using it. My favorite is a 50/50 mix of white sticky rice and black sticky rice, cooked on the brown rice setting. Wrap in seaweed, add arugula, some protein. Heaven.

I have the pressure cooker version
Zojirushi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker & Warmer NP-NVC10
I was told soft and tasty brown rice required higher pressure and temperature. I can’t really tell the difference.

Zojirushi makes outstanding products. We have the five cup model and use it daily for oatmeal, rice porridge, millet, lentils, grits and multiple kinds of rice. Cooks everything perfectly.

Please use a wooden spoon with it when spooning out the rice or whatever. The bowl has a high tech cladding, and is durable and will last forever if you do not abuse it, but if you beat it up with a metal spoon it will get damaged after several years.

It is a superb product. The only thing I have ever bought which was of comparable quality and utility was a 1982 Trek mountain bike which is still going strong.

We had one for many years. When it died, Mrs Barefoot didn't hesitate, she bought another one.

We love our Zojirushi. My mom always used one for cooking rice almost daily when I was growing up. No regrets buying a "nice" one for my own home.

Yes you should buy the new Zojirushi, it is the same model we have at home and cooks all types of rice perfectly every time, better than the instant pot. We bought the new model a few years ago after my wife's 20 year old Zojirushi finally died.

I use the supplied (plastic? Silicon?) spoon, and have not had any problems with durability. I do put the bowl in the dishwasher occasionally, but only on the top rack.

OP, I just remembered that I gave DS a Zojirushi as an apartment warming gift, along with a Technivorm MoccaMaster, after he moved into his first “adult apartment.” He’s a foodie and the gifts are well used.

Zojirushi rice cookers are great, highly recommended.

Ours plays "Twinkle, twinkle little star" when it starts up.

But does anyone know what the happy little tune it plays at the end is? I can't place it.

I have a Sanyo ECJ-D55S 5.5-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker/Steamer (for 6 or 7 years) that I use for cooking brown rice and steel cut oatmeal (mostly for oatmeal). It works great (a perfect rice & oatmeal every time).

When that report came out several years ago about the higher arsenic levels in rice (higher in brown than white) it concerned me so I cut back on making it. But I have since read that there is less arsenic in Basmati rice (from India) & Jasmine rice (from Southeast Asia) than there is in American rice. American rice grown in California has less arsenic than what is grown in the south central states where they used arsenic pesticides in those old cotton fields. The American rice that I find in stores doesn’t tell me where it was grown (just where it was distributed from).

When I saw the brown Basmati rice in Aldi’s awhile back I purchased a couple of bags.

Adding extra water for brown rice, works fine in my cooker from WalMart, and I add a little or a lot of cooked brown rice to something in every meal.

Brown rice is low calorie, filling, fibrous, no added sugar, thus healthier than whatever it displaces at each meal.

Brown rice has higher calories than white rice.

We bought rice cookers several times - but the insides of the vessel holding the rice inevitably would start peeling off in 6 months. We now just use a heavy steel pot.

Some, but not all Zojirushi rice cookers have the program for brown rice. Be sure that the model you're considering has what you need.

Zojirushi makes a great product. We have the Zojirushi NP-HCC10XH Induction model (1L version) and have bought both the 10xh and the the NP-HCC18XH Induction model (1.8L version) for family. Currently, the difference is only about $5-$10 on Amazon between these two. These cost almost double the amount of the model you are considering, and I still think they were well worth the money. We eat a lot of rice, and I can tell the difference between the our old generic rice pot and this one. Actually, I was really surprised by the difference. While I don't know how the induction model compares to the one you are considering, I would buy the induction model again. I didn't buy the pressure cooker model because I'm a little afraid of pressure cookers. The induction supposedly provides more evenly cooked rice. I'm fairly sensitive, and I can taste the difference, while my older parents don't really notice a difference. In my opinion, each grain of rice is more resolvable and cooked well vs. a more soggy clumped mess, particularly vertically through the rice pot.

Yes, I bought a replacement after a few years (~$65 on amazon). They do scratch badly. I wish zojirushi would offer a stainless option.
