[Government stimulus payments]

Post by bigtex » Wed Apr 01, 2020 3:58 pm

[Title was "Report when you receive your stimulus check here". --admin LadyGeek]

Can we use this post for everyone to post the date on which they receive their stimulus check? Just so we can see when these checks start coming in.

just checked my bank acct because I heard the stimulus payments could be as early as today. Sure enough $1200 dumped in savings. Not sure how to make this actionable other than to say I plan to invest it.

anyone else get theirs today?

If they can dump it in to your account, they can take it out of your account.

Mine (less than the $1200) is showing pending with a post date of 4/15. I want to move it all to savings but I feel somewhat obligated to spend part of it so maybe I'll go 50/50.

I guess mine will come as a check. I plan to give it all to charity.

I filed for 2019 the day before the CARES act passed, in order to qualify. I did not qualify for 2018. Expecting 3400, have not seen it yet.

I am holding my 2019 tax return until I receive the stimulus because my 2019 taxable income was higher than 2018. If it was based on 2019, I wouldn't receive anything.

Update: I received our stimulus check today in the mail 05/22/20 for $1,059.95. I mailed our 2019 tax return a few days ago, but apparently they based our check on our 2018 return. We filed married filing jointly.

Yes, I'm in the same situation except I already filed for 2019. I'm hoping that they just don't have the ability to do 2018 for some and 2019 for others and just default to 2018 for everyone.

May I ask if you are receiving Social Security?

DW and I both should each see $1,200 deposit to the respective accounts where our Social Security benefits are deposited. At least that is what I think will happen.

The IRS only has our 2018 return, as we haven't yet filed for 2019. We haven't received a refund on our income taxes in many years, as I try to owe a little bit rather than lending Uncle Sam money then filing a return to get some portion refunded. So the IRS has no way to use the bank info from our tax return for our stimulus checks, since it hasn't been provided for so long.

Thanks!

So, singles with AGI < $75K and married couples with AGI < $150K on their most recent income tax return get the checks?

Everyone have probably seen this already - Tracking tool should be coming up next week:

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/treasury-i ... t-payments
To help everyone check on the status of their payments, the IRS is building a second new tool expected to be available for use by April 17. Get My Payment will provide people with the status of their payment, including the date their payment is scheduled to be deposited into their bank account or mailed to them.

Haven't got mine but I only had tax due in 2018 and 2019, no refund, so I may be using this:
An additional feature on Get My Payment will allow eligible people a chance to provide their bank account information so they can receive their payment more quickly rather than waiting for a paper check. This feature will be unavailable if the Economic Impact Payment has already been scheduled for delivery.

Not sure I'll do this, but I could afford to, any suggestions on how to efficiently do this?

Spread it out? Make somebody's day? Should it be new spending? Something I can benefit from as well as the recipient?

The FULL amount yes. But you can make more than that and still get partial. $500 per child as well.

no I don't get SS. I work for state government (median income earner).

my girlfriend got her payment today as well. She works part time and has self-employment. No SS for her either, if you were wondering.

And now that you ask, her father, who is on SS now did not get his $1200 deposited today.

So maybe SS has something to do with it? When two non-SS earners receive the stim check, but the SS earner doesn't.

Nothing in my bank account today :(

Direct deposit refund in 2018 and filed 2019 taxes on 3/27 with direct deposit refund. Received both State and Fed refund exactly one week later

There's a local Thai restaurant we love. The owners and sole employees are immigrants who work from 8:00AM to 11:00PM 6 days a week. Their restaurant put their three daughters through university. As soon as they reopen, if they reopen :confused , we'll eat there as much as possible.
We plan. G-d laughs.

I manage finances for an elderly relative of mine, and I see a pending deposit of $1,200 from "IRS TREAS". She has not filed yet for this year (but will), and is currently receiving Social Security retirement benefits.

I don't have anything in my personal account, but that's not surprising since I did not file for 2019 yet and my account used in 2018 has been closed.

Great!
Also had a Thai/Vietnamese restaurant very close to where we lived, walking distance. That family was there from 8-11 also, 7 days a week. Children went through the university as well. We ate there often or took out.

I paid from my bank account for 2018 taxes and with a credit card for 2019 taxes. Never a refund. Is the IRS likely to transfer to my bank account or mail a check?

The IRS will send a check if you did not pay a balance due by direct debit or receive a refund by direct deposit.

For me this money will come in handy since I am partially unemployed due to reduced hours. I only spend according to my budget, so any excesses minus spending will be invested in the stock market. Actually I'm loving life right now, especially considering that I have worked 50+ hours per week for most of my adult life.

From the IRS website:

"The IRS does not have my direct deposit information. What can I do?

In the coming weeks, Treasury plans to develop a web-based portal for individuals to provide their banking information to the IRS online, so that individuals can receive payments immediately as opposed to checks in the mail."
We plan. G-d laughs.

Thank you for posting that. Just learned we qualify for ~$1700 stimulus payment based on our 2018 return but would not qualify for anything based on our 2019 return (which we haven't filed yet).

So this begs the question: Will Uncle Sam be asking us for his $1700 back when he learns this? (assuming this would be baked into our 2020 return somehow) Is there any info on this?

TIA Bogleheads!

Not for me. Mine was EFD. It says it’s from IRS. It’s the same amount the online calculator said it would be.

No, you won't need to repay it. I would have qualified for a much larger payment based on 2018 as well. I wish I hadn't filed my 2019 return early

Nothing in my account yet, altho the IRS is scheduled to pull the few hundred dollars I still owe for 2019 on April 15th. Maybe they'll deposit my $2400 the same day!

Plan to use mine at local small businesses and charities that help folks that need it more than me!

Are there some Bogleheads out there for whom the checks will help you manage through a hardship? So far we just see the (expected, given the site demographic) use cases of vacation funds, savings/investing, and charitable giving. Definitely highlights the inefficiency in the recipient criteria from the rush to get them out.

Nothing in my account... as expected. 2018 was our last W-2 year. 2029 hasn’t been filed yet, but would be above threshold.

I’ll have to keep the stimulus check threshold in mind when planning our 2020 earnings. Does TaxCaster already support it? ;)

I don't expect any. That's the way it should be.

Are there some Bogleheads out there for whom the checks will help you manage through a hardship? So far we just see the (expected, given the site demographic) use cases of vacation funds, savings/investing, and charitable giving. Definitely highlights the inefficiency in the recipient criteria from the rush to get them out.
Yes, it will help me. Although I am a landlord, some of tenants can't pay right or need a lot time before paying. In addition, I worked at a restaurant before the pandemic and became unemployed due to a back injury. I was ready to get back work in March!
I'm not saying I'm poor. I do have some savings and assets but this payment will definitely help.

My divorced parents will certainly welcome this payment as well. My mom is still waiting on unemployment benefits and my dad is on disability.

But all is good since we are all still healthy. :happy
