I know no market timing here, but if I have 150K USD to deploy, which is about 5% of my assets. How best to deploy, I am thinking of DCA three trunks for two months - 50/50/50. Thoughts?

similiar situation for me... DCA seems to be the most prudent course of action
Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
YTD I’m down about 14 pct on a 50/50 portfolio w 10 pct cash
The run up to Feb 20 -21 Was mor a blip, but I’d be down about 17 pct from that
I’m 74 and retired, w pretty good fixed benefits and a large personal asset loan account if I ever need it

Down ~7.5% on an AA of 25:75. Losses equate to ~5 years of expenses
, a good gauge, since DH just took an early retirement package from Megacorp, and I still plan to retire this year.

I have not checked, not going to do anything about it as present, stay the course. As I have gotten older, the less I can/will do about something involving bad news, the less I bother to look at it : )
If the SP500 PE drops below 12-15 or so, then I may look and see how out of whack my stock/bond/gold allocations are, and consider rebalancing then. I may look if I get bored too

Not going to answer because who cares, we’ve all lost money.
Posting anyways just to proclaim how annoyed I am when friends tell me how much they’ve lost. In my eyes it’s just an indirect way of bragging about how much money people have.
“I’m down $200k already!” <— when someone says this, I don’t know their net worth bc I don’t know their AA. But I do know that if the stock market is down 30%, their NW must be at least $660k. If they have bonds, then their NW is higher.
Anyways just venting about how much it annoys me. I roll my eyes when people tell me the dollar amount of their losses. I get that this is an anonymous board full of strangers. But with people you actually know it’s different.

It is worst if you hear your friends say they made big money in this market. i have friends bragging how they made the most this year. Not sure if they are trying to hide their losses or save face, but if you made it big this year this you are the 1% of lucky peopleabsolute zero wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 6:11 pm Not going to answer because who cares, we’ve all lost money.

I agree that having friends/acquaintances brag about making money these past couple months would be worse, especially if they throw around actual dollar figures. I would label that sort of behavior as “trashy.”kareysue wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 9:07 pmIt is worst if you hear your friends say they made big money in this market. i have friends bragging how they made the most this year. Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
I think I posted earlier, but here’s a more recent update:
2/20 (all-time high): $837k
3/23: $754k
3/24: $785k
4/1: $803k
So, down about $34k/-4% from the all-time highs.
I’ve kept meticulous notes during these past few weeks.
1. 3/23 was one of those awful black Mondays and that’s when we established the current low. I was around 43/57 on this day and bought some UPRO right before the close.
2. 3/24 was the massive rally on Tuesday, the UPRO gamble paid off nicely, and this day was a gift. I unloaded pretty much everything and you can see my AA in my sig.
3. All I’ve been doing since then is day trading the 3x and 3x inverse ETFs on my play account. Up about $20k on those trades thus far.
Yes, a bunch of market timing and zero regrets. I was 50/50 going into this thing and I realized that’s too much for me at this stage in my life (44 years old) and the size of my portfolio. I can’t handle losing $100-200k or more so this crisis has taught me well about my risk tolerance.
When the dust settles, I’ll most likely move to something ultra conservative like 20/80 and just stay there.
Extremely grateful to have lost very little in all this madness.

I had to bite down hard and finally calculate this today. I’m down around 17% on a 90/10 portfolio. You know what, that’s better than I thought it was going to be. I’ll take it.
Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
I dont really track actual dollars but more the percentage. About 10 days ago I was down ~13% over past year. Today its 6%. No changes planned for now and reevaluating rebalancing this month.
Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
Update: Now restored to former glory, glad I stayed the course and did nothing. It was certainly an interesting (unrealized) ride. I feel that the next swings will be easier to handle and I will do the same thing; nothing.

Did your account just "stay the course" or was there some real-time adjusting/re-adjusting?
Does it help to think in terms of %s instead of nominal #s?
Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
I'm new here so not following up on a previous post but YTD I'm up about 7% across our 401ks because we dumped our remaining yearly max in sometime in late March. I wish I'd done IRAs also.

WE also have done nothing.
Seemed a lil tense but had the faith it would come back.
The only change I did make as planned is moving from a 70/30 AA towards a 60/40 as we get close to retirement. Doing that by DCA the monthly amount we were already putting in and now buying Total Bonds with it.
So we are about 300K above where we were when it started hitting the skids in February.
I think still on track for 2 year retirement.

-1.5% currently at about 745K. But a third of that was new cash from recent property capital gains; We were about to make a lump sum investment when Covid hit the news from China so we delayed. Between national politics, Covid-19, market's irrational exuberance, and our age of 57 we have become increasingly spooked for the short term. We sold a certain amount in late February and again sold more in the last week or 2. We are currently about 25/75 and sleep very well at night. I've been mostly indexing for a long time; I consider this a temporary adjustment to our AA which would normally be closer to 60/40... once a vaccine is developed and the economy starts to heal we'll move back to our regular AA.

Yes, % thinking helped.
Glad to be back on the sunny side for now.

Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
I do not know how much we lost or gain but I know that our portfolio has reached a new record a few weeks ago.
Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
Portfolio is now up +33.77% since 02/20/2020.
This includes ongoing 401k contributions + market gains because I'm too lazy to calculate otherwise.
Portfolio fell -23.4% between 02/02 and 04/03. That was painful to see but could have been way worse.
Happy with the +57% turn around/recovery since 04/03.
Biggest identifiable factors for us:
1. Held $TSLA from before the dip, and still holding.
2. Sold equity pre-dip cause it looked like it could get ugly quick.
3. Used that cash (slowly) to redeploy into sectors that could benefit/bounce back earlier on.
Could've kept it a bit more boring and recovered just fine had I stayed the course in index funds.
However, these dips don't seem to come around often so I figured might as well go for it.

I have a classic 3-fund portfolio* in my 401k. 80:20, which is a little aggressive. *I actually slice:dice with SP500 and Small/Mid Cap and 4% TIPS fund. So technically 5 funds, but on the whole it's really 3-fund. After rebalancing in Feb, it is now 83:17. +4.3% YTD I guess I should rebalance.

Re: How much you lost/gain since Feb 20,2020 ?
+10.886%. Amazing!
It was a bumpy ride for a few months. 10s and 10s of thousands of dollars changes day to day, so many days. Down, down, up, up, up, down....
I learned that rebalancing was difficult to do, I would be ready to buy, but then I needed to sell!
As usual, I feel less comfortable with the levels of equities now, but that is not to say I don't like it, overall.

So your strategy is to have lots of stocks, then sell a bunch of your stocks when stocks tank (Covid), then buy up stocks once stocks rise (vaccine developed)? The whole point of an AA is to prevent exactly this. You should reconsider your tolerance and maybe reduce your stock %

Up 10% YTD. Including a 110k gain in last 30 days. Stayed the course mostly; and buying as much as I could during Mar-June. Moved some money into QQQ (from VTSAX) in the second half of the covid recovery in the stock markets.

Max loss $7 million. Since recovered $8M to all time high. Lots of tax loss harvesting toward the bottom, but later reinvested largely in tech. All in all, would have done about as well if I had just left things alone, but frankly, I was scared to death.

i'm still underwater 0.3% from my all time highs in Feb. (thanks to a healthy allocation of Small Caps and International)
Small Caps are still in a bear market and has not reached a high for almost 2 years now.
Hopefully tomorrow I should hit an all time high.

up 30%.
60/40 allocation (now more like 67/33)
Equities: no int'l holdings, tilting heavily to large growth (FDGRX, up 44.8% for the year)
Fixed: steaming along nicely with a very large of chunk of iBonds purchased in the late 90's (3.4% fixed
), EE bonds at 4.4%, and TBM
My IPS says to rebalance into bonds; my heart says to stay the course for awhile - there will be another correction that will take care of it and if not - yeehaw!

I think we were down about 25% at some point after COVID hit, but were back at our 1/1/20 amount in May or June. We're now up 30% YTD.
It's been a weird year for sure.

A few percent up. I wasn't stupid selling everything into the bear market. I stretched a bit in March and bought up more equities than normal, and found a few thousand in a bond fund in March that I also put into S&P500 when it was low, but that's all I've done, so the entire thing was basically an irrelevant blip.
