I know a former co-worker he buys when the total markets down 5%, 10% from the highs. Looks like today is the day for him.

I recently changed jobs and have a 401(k) rollover underway. This process is irritatingly slow, but the "check" is supposedly on its way to my Vanguard rollover IRA after several weeks :annoyed

Once the rollover hits my settlement account I will be buying immediately, regardless of market conditions, because I hate having investment $ in limbo :annoyed

I would have left the $ in the 401(k), but the plan was charging me maintenance fees that were around 370% of the aggregate ER on the Vanguard Admiral shares I was holding in the account :annoyed Might as well hold my 3-fund directly at Vanguard and save myself the fees! :sharebeer

Dow futures down over 800 points. This seems like overkill. I'm definitely buying today. This is possibly one of those big down trading days that historically has positive returns going forward based on history. Meaning, if investors sellout today and days like this then buy in later miss out.

My 401k payroll contribution hits tomorrow. I don't plan on making any moves unless I hit a rebalancing point. If my raise gets approved I'll put most of that towards an increased 401k contribution.

The way I see things, days like today serve the good purpose of testing your asset allocation strategy which is what will largely determine your long-term success. At 48 many would say that 60/40 is way too conservative, and I wouldn’t argue that fact when the market has been going up every week, week in and week out, but now I get a nice warm hug from my bonds which reminds me of the dry powder I have to rebalance into stocks if this is, in fact, “the big one”.

There’s no doubt that a large percentage of the investing public is overexposed the equity volatility. I would be the least bit surprised if there’s capitulation, which is why I’ll be patient.

Down 3-4% today but maybe much more pain to come after this. But maybe not as we’ve all learned that we can’t predict where markets are going. I’ve learned that no matter how sure I am, I’m usually wrong so I do nothing.

What kind of worries me is that interest rates are already low and there isn’t much more left for the central banks to stimulate the economy during this shock. Maybe we will go into negative territory for rates if things get much worse.

I have a month's worth of uninvested cash sitting in the investment portion my HSA account at TD Ameritrade, so I put in a low limit order to buy more SPTM. If it doesn't hit that low limit today, good. If it does, good.

I just put in a limit order for VTI at 165. (10:11AM EST)

So that will stop the market from going lower.

If stocks are still down at the end of the day my target date fund will automatically sell some bonds to buy some stocks.

Before you get too excited be sure to look up the statistics to see how often the stock market will drop by a couple of percent in a day. It is not at all uncommon.

I am dating myself a little but I I can still remember October 19, 1987 when the stock market dropped more than 22% in one day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Monday_(1987)

I was just starting out then and in the process of buying my first house so I had been putting all money money towards saving up a downpayment so did not have any money in stocks but I can remember my manager looking pretty shell shocked. He kept trying to call his stock broker and not being able to get through, sort of like people who are having trouble with websites today.

There was a huge information gap and even on the radio and TV they could not get current quotes since all the quotes were backed up and an hour or more behind. The lack of information was as unknerving as the actual drop. The actual closing numbers were not known until very late in the evening and even then there was some question about how accurate they were.

Well, considering prices have only rolled back let's day Jan. 27th didn't think people would have dump that much into taxable account in a month.

I have not looked into the details of just how they do it but they are very careful to try to very closely track their benchmarks which would be some sort of mathematical composite index so they would have problems doing that if they just rebalance quarterly.

There could also be lawsuits if they do not stay close to their published asset allocation targets.

Most likely in addition to buying and selling they also use incoming and outgoing money, options, derivatives, and other proprietary trading methods to keep very close to their target asset allocation.

I don't have a definitive link but while it may not be exact I would expect them to stay within a very tight range of their target asset allocation.

Last I heard, Lowe's and Home Depot had N95 masks, but they may be gone now.

I've had a stash of them for years in preparation for an event such as this.

In Hong Kong not only are they out of masks but toilet paper, hand sanitizer and rice have been cleared from the shelves....folks have gone to Japan in search for masks. My wife has lots of relatives in HK and she is trying to find masks to bring to HK but cannot find anything locally in Los Angeles area...we were just in Alameda and nothing there either. Armed gangs are stealing masks in HK! Wonder what the markup is?

Lots of folks are panicking. We guess that Chinese with relatives in HK are clearing the shelves to send too HK.

And that's quite possibly the big issue in the U.S.: how will people react to the threat of the virus?

Not buying anything today.... bought 50 masks yesterday. Have some long term gold holding I might sell a slice of later.
Wow really? Are folks panicking?
In Hong Kong not only are they out of masks but toilet paper, hand sanitizer and rice have been cleared from the shelves....folks have gone to Japan in search for masks. My wife has lots of relatives in HK and she is trying to find masks to bring to HK but cannot find anything locally in Los Angeles area...we were just in Alameda and nothing there either. Armed gangs are stealing masks in HK! Wonder what the markup is?

Lots of folks are panicking. We guess that Chinese with relatives in HK are clearing the shelves to send too HK.
That is incredible and I can not imagine. I hope this virus is resolved soon with a cure.

So in one of those boring investors who mainly tracks the S&P...here are my results since 2013.

2013 - +22%
2014 - +8%
2015 - +.5%
2016 - +11%
2017 - +20%
2018 - -5%
2019 - +28%

Sadly, I didnt start tracking till 2013...wish I would have started in 2007 or so. Anyway, can someone explain to me why I should care about a 3% drop in a single day? lol In 5 years from now this day/week/month/year will not even show up on a chart. Stay the course!

Many would say you shouldn't care about any drops or increases, you should stay on autopilot. But if we're all working off the notion that the markets are continuing to go up in the long run, then a 3% drop is basically a "free" 3% in the eyes of many. Sure, it could go down another 3% tomorrow, but we're all betting that it'll eventually get back to "zero" and beyond, so buying at any dip is a win. But for those of us that buy the last day of each month, for example, the question becomes where will we be at the end of this week? Down 10% total or back to where we started? Do you lock in a guaranteed "free 3" today or hold out for a possible "free 10" on Friday (and simultaneously risk no freebie at all)? That thinking just gets you back to thinking you can time things and next thing you know you're at a gamblers anonymous meeting wondering what happened.

Where at?
Last I heard, Lowe's and Home Depot had N95 masks, but they may be gone now.

I've had a stash of them for years in preparation for an event such as this.
I bought a pack of 20 off Ebay

Lowe's and THD were indeed out

I thought I would load up on Clorox at a discount today, one of the few cheap compounds able to kill viruses, but everyone beat me to it. Up about 3%!

Which N95? There are so many models. These at HD are for home remodeling: sanding, painting.

N95 is a NIOSH rating. Beyond meeting the rating, I'm not sure it's going to matter much mask to mask beyond minor features that may impact livability since they are adhering to a rating.

Personally, I had the 3M #8210 N95 masks on order but the vendor cancelled my order.

Rookie investor here with a question -

Do you guys pile up the cash and wait until a day like today to buy? Or, just buy as soon as your paycheck arrives in your account?
