So right now we are looking at being down roughly 3% from the high at the open, not sure I even consider it a drop, more like the heart beat of the market. My guess is I will start to pay attention around 8% or so. Not sure when I will step in.

I get paid Tuesday, so 403B and 457B should be funding shortly.

Otherwise, next purchase won't be until next Monday, the normal monthly post-tax index purchase.

I am only showing down 227 on Yahoo.

I agree. This is the tip of the iceberg.

Stick to your allocation.

When stocks are down 10%, then you can rebalance, i.e., buy stocks.

I'm watching re-infection rates in factories that are reopening this week. If they reopen only to have to close again a week later, then I fear we're headed much lower than a 400 point drop. If we go a few weeks without that happening, which is what I hope happens, then it could be a good chance to "buy the dip".

^^ This. If the market were to fall 5%, I'd get itchy fingers. If it were to fall 10%+, I'd have to pull the trigger on at least some buying. For one thing, I'd need to rebalance my 70/30 portfolio. :beer

I'll probably add to my holdings in Vanguard LifeStrat Moderate Growth (VSMGX) fund. An old standby conservative all in one fund for a down day like Monday may become. Good luck to all on this potential down Monday.

Tomorrow is an up day if the following days and weeks are followed by more declines. So no, I will not be doing anything out of the ordinary tomorrow.

With the kind of run up we’ve had this year 5% would be somewhat dramatic.

We have had so many such days in the past. It is not at all unlikely that the Dow will close up on Monday, despite opening down a few hundred.

It is now 5:50 am EST and Dow Futures are down 778 (2.68%) and S&P Futures down 85.5 (2.75%) and the trend continues to show a downward path.
Does that change anyone's perspective?
Personally, I may be looking to buy.

Too early to buy, if this is anything like 2018 was, the larger downdraft is still to come.

I think this is a reference to tactical asset allocation. Like livesoft backing the truck up - willingness to shift more from FI into equities on Really Bad Days, ie overweighting equities relative to AA, to be balanced out later. (Yes, it's market timing - I think livesoft has posted extensively on his lack of remorse. :greedy)

Don't know what the LifeStrategy funds are doing today. But, at the end of the month, I'll reinvest interest and dividends, and they can keep doing whatever they are doing with it for another month.

Buying on the dip doesn't accomplish anything but get you to buy where you should have bought a few weeks before. My next buy is scheduled in 2 weeks for the 401K then a rebalance in taxable using the dividends. I have no reaction to the market today except to watch and wait.

We may catch a movie. Only on this site will you see members rubbing their hands together in glee over the prospect of a RBD, even though this doesn't qualify yet. Unsophisticated visitors would think they just fell down the rabbit hole.

I'm confused by the notion of "buying the dip." Is there any analysis or data out there to show it's an effective--or even coherent--strategy? It makes no sense to me.

As a few others have suggested, I struggle to understand these threads. A drop of the level cited in this post will value the market similarly to how it was valued less than one month ago. How is this a reason for boglegeads to act when they did not act 3 weeks ago? Seems to be an emotional reaction to short term market volatility, but accepted (or even celebrated) on here since it is a reaction of buying rather than selling? Instead of “buying anything today” I prefer to “stay the course”.

I'm buying International small-value and US large-value (fundamental index) with 401k money that just hit the bank from a transfer to an IRA (timing worked out well, eh?).

I'm confused by the notion of "buying the dip." Is there any analysis or data out there to show it's an effective--or even coherent--strategy? It makes no sense to me.
To paraphrase Warren Buffet on CNBC this morning. We will be buying the same things today we were buying Friday and feeling better about it.
Mr. Buffett's advice is excellent.

It's purely emotional because we all like to feel smart. In truth, it makes almost zero difference even if you got it exactly right every time, which is why market timing doesn't work.

You'd think if market timing worked, all these supercomputers would've figured it out by now.
I'm not smart enough to know, and I can't afford to guess.

My 2019 bonus hits on Thursday or Friday and 66% (+4% match) is going to my 401(k). I turn 50 next month, so it's a way to more than fund the catch-up in one lump sum, while actually dropping my regular deferral percentage a percent or two. (We don't have a true-up--or after-tax deferrals--so I have to make sure that I don't max out until my last paycheck of the year.) But the large bonus 401(k) contribution has been planned all year, it's not a response to any market drop this week.

I might accelerate our March Roth IRA contributions (~$583.33 x 2) into this week, but that would be the extent of it. And I often do those a few days early anyway, so it's not a big departure. Beyond that, we have no investable cash on the sidelines outside of our 85/15 retirement portfolio.

It will be interesting to see where the day ends up. The Dow futures were pointing to a 770-point drop an hour before market open.

No plans to do much, although I have some protective puts on SPY (February 28) that I might sell and roll.

Low income/small investor here but...
By pure chance, I sold all my Apple shares Friday in exchange for more VTSAX today. This will boost my VTSAX shares by roughly 50%.

I usually look to buy on steep down days. Are you? Where and what?
I think I'm buying lunch for my wife and I. Haven't decided where just yet.

What did you buy the last time the markets were down about 3% in a day (last August, I believe)?
I don't remember, but my guess is Vanguard LifeStrat Mod Growth VSMGX. It's usually my go-to fund when everything is dropping.

Just have a couple thousand in 401k and 403b contributions hitting today - both going into Total International.

Might move another percent or so from my bond holdings into Total International if those funds are still wrecked by the end of the day, but only because I'm already underweight.
