How are you spending Valentine's day?

Post by Pete12 » Fri Feb 14, 2020 12:03 pm

I just enjoyed a romantic lunch of a PB&J sandwich with my wife. The sandwich was delicious and the company was great.

This evening we are going for a family dinner at a reasonably fancy local restaurant, the type of place where jackets are recommended but not mandatory.

Both meals I think can be 100% Boglehead-approved since we generally live frugally but we don't deny ourselves occasional pleasures either!

What are Bogleheads doing for Valentine's day this year?

I am spending the day at the hospital, kiddo had an elective surgery at 7:30am. We will be here a few days.

A true act of love, hope all is well.

We're having mimosas at home with beans and rice. (Friday abstinence, just ignore the bubbly :happy ) I already wrote everyone a poetry scavenger hunt, and maybe I'll put a log in the fireplace if this cold keeps up!

Cooking at home:

Duck breasts with a cherry pomegranate reduction
Duck fat fried potatoes
Some vegetable
A nice bottle of Ridge Lytton Springs

Yum. A little expensive but a fraction of going out to eat.

Hanging out with my 90 year old dad for a few days. Took him to a doctor visit, did some stealth chores around his house, cooked him some meals, did some business. Not really Valentine stuff but had my DW with me. :beer

A half-baked deep dish pizza from the local YUMMY pizza restaurant; taken home and BBQ'ed to smoke the cheese.

Bottle of bubbly, already in the fridge.

DH's assignment today was to pick up two slices of something desserty from the local bakery.

Ate sushi for lunch at a new place in town. Planning on cooking a meal and warming up before a nice fire in the fireplace this evening.

Ribeyes on the grill. Has become tradition after being disappointed a couple times at local steakhouses.

Picking up Chili's to go for my wife and me on the way home from work. We each got the 3 for $10 meal. Total $21.60. Our two year old daughter is the pickiest eater ever, so she will eat (or likely not eat) spaghetti at home.

Taking my 5yo daughter to a father/daughter banquet that her ballet school is putting on. Coat & tie for the dads and we were even encouraged to buy corsages and boutonnieres. I don't think she's been to anything this "fancy" before, so it should be a lot of fun even if I have to wear the tie.

Totally agree homemade steaks are usually better than steaks eaten out (and a fraction of the price.) Costco steak (USDA choice is absolutely fine for ribeyes), seared to perfection in the cash iron skillet, and paired with a $10 Argentina malbec.... delish :thumbsup

Like every other Friday we will have Nachos made at home with spicy refried beans (my own spice mix). Yum! Depending on how bad traffic makes my commute home I may stop at the store and buy my husband some Coronas and an avocado and maybe some conversation hearts for myself.

I've been back and fourth with Stihl and Husky. I've had 3 Huskys. I walked in and instead of talking with the sales guy, I went right in to service. They sell both. Their take: They're both great. If you're familiar with Husky, stick with it. I did. Matches my Kubota, so there's that.

This is the second Valentine's Day without my sweetie, so I wasn't sure how the day would be.

BUT...

My wonderful sister-in-law - who includes me in all their family events - sent me a lovely Valentine's Day card.

And my sister from North Carolina bought me a top from Land's End which arrived today. I've been losing weight and she thought I should celebrate with something new. How thoughtful!

So it's been a great day.

Out to dinner, presents and just spending time together. There is a reason we make money, invest money and live carefully. It’s times like these to spend some of that and live. Cheers.

We stay in and I cook, just like almost everyday. My wife and I used to go out on vday and snicker at those where it was obvious their first vday dinner together. They always look very unrelaxed.

We went out to the local ice cream store to get ice cream cones this afternoon.

For years we have exchanged ice cream cones instead of greeting cards for things like Valentine's day and birthdays since they cost about the same but we enjoy then more.

With 4 children at home, I bought flowers and cheesecake after work for DW so we can spend a loud rambunctious evening wrangling children. After getting a peck on the cheek, I then proceeded outside to shovel snow for an hour until the sun came down. Otherwise, we might be trapped tomorrow if the snow turns to ice.

Single guy here so it's just like any other day for me, except the traffic seems a lot worse. I hear many people made it a 4-day weekend because of Monday is President's Day.

My wife has an exam tonight, so I am hanging out with the kids until about 8pm and then we'll likely fall asleep watching the new season of "Better Call Saul". I got her some new cramp-ons last week and she got me some metal shelving for the garage. I'm glad she cares as much about Valentine's Day as I do.

Had 15 former masters degree students over for dinner (soup, samosas, sandwiches, wine) and https://www.shotinthedarkmysteries.com/, inaugurating a 3-day reunion. At last year’s reunion, we threw a baby shower for one of the students, and now that 8-month-old is here with us!

I think it's supposed to be such that you don't feel discomfort, but still be aware of what's going on. If she felt really bad cramps during the procedure, then the anesthesiologist didn't do their job.

We exchanged cards at breakfast. Had the 13 yr old grandson over after school and he raced his RC cars for us. DH made his famous chicken parm, but since we are sort of Keto, we used crushed pork rinds with Italian Seasoning and sugar free marina. Its also our male Border Collie's 12th birthday, so he enjoyed the pasta dinner too (both of our dogs love spagetti). Oh and had our 14 yr old Samsung dryer repaired under home warranty.
Its our 48th Valentine's Day (not all spent together, he worked shift for many years). Checked that Fidelity accounts were up to end the perfect day.
