IRS PIN Letters for 2019 taxes

Post by newcollegeman » Thu Jan 09, 2020 8:17 pm

Has anyone gotten their 2019 tax filing IRS PIN letters yet?

I strangely by this date have not....

Unsure what to do about that, if I’m the only one!

Advice?

I’ve never gotten one. What am I missing?

I believe an IP PIN is mostly for people that have had issues with identity theft in the past. My wife was a victim and she receives a PIN in the mail from the IRS every year. For more information see the following.

How do you receive a notice dated Jan 13 2020, when that date is in the future?

The fact that the webpage says in a big banner across the top -

Alert: Planned Outage until January 2020

and it is currently January 10th, should tell you oodles about the IRS timeliness.

The program has changed. There are now 20 states that are part of an OPT-In program - Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas or Washington are the states for 2020.

IRS website tells me that the 'Apply for PIN' function will not be available until 1/16/2020. This will be the first year residents of my state can opt-in.

I receive the letter every year due to someone trying to get my refund 4 years ago. I also received my letter last week. I did not look at the date.

So for this opt in program, is that saying for the residents of the states in the program, they can ask for a pin?

I'd recommend it although one year, the e-file would not accept my PIN and I had to print and mail my forms in.

Virtually the definition of "opt-in", yes.

I know it doesn't make any sense, but it is the date on the notice.

I got mine late last week, also dated Jan. 13. I've been getting them every January since an identity-theft incident about 10y ago.
