I think it may have been twenties or perhaps early thirties. Not sure.

Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
April 15, 2015 (tax day!) at 32. We got a late start with saving for retirement (first IRA contribution at 30) and most of that net worth came from the equity in selling our first condo.

Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
The question is useless as a longitudinal comparison; cross-sectional, it makes sense.
Let me explain. First off , $100k today is not what it was a generation ago - or a generation before that. $100k is probably what a graduate makes these days in the stem fields right out of school. So, the above dataset would be skewed both sides by folks at either extreme of my example. Folks from two generations ago (who entered the job market 40 years ago, let's say) would have taken way longer to get to $100k than folks who entered the job market three years ago (who ought to have $100k net worth today, if they graduated with no debt)!
A better question would be - at what age did you first have a net worth that was x times your annual income?
Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
Early September 2008 lol, right before the crash. Looking at spreadsheet, I went from -2k in August to +5k in September. 'Flush with cash' I opened a Roth IRA at Vanguard later that month.

We were at >$100 NW by around age 24 without counting home equity. However since this post was in 2013, adjusting for inflation we could call it 25

Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
I fondly remember when my bonus hit in December 2012 when I, at age 26, hit $0 net worth ($150k of student loans). I celebrated by having an extra cocktail at dessert with my then fiancée. I cleared $100k of net worth in November 2014 (23 months). $200k in January 2016 (14 months). $300k in October 2016 (9 months). $400k in February 2017 (4 months). $500k in October 2017 (8 months) After this holiday season, it hit $1m for the first time (on average 5 months per 100k). This is just me, not including my wife (who came in with some assets of her own.) From this example alone, it does appear the first 100k was the hardest.
Combination of: good paying job, refi educational loans at low rates, wife who shares similar values, frugal living (I take busses instead of trains to go into the city), mega backdoor Roth, maxing out 529 and other tax shelters, riding the bull market, paying for vacations with hotel points and airline miles, etc. etc.

Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
Wow! Sorry to skew the stats, but my net worth was probably negative until sometime in my 50s when IRA surpassed outstanding debt. Hit 100 k around age 60 thanks to unexpected inheritance. Current status, no debt and halfway to two commas. Don't expect to reach them and not losing any sleep over that. It's a weird world when a guy in his 30s can cry poor because he isn't a millionaire.
Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
Are people including mortgages in these net worth? What about home equity?
Hard to imagine people have such a high net worth in 20s and 30s if including mortgage debt.

Age 35 in 1996. I was a very happy Army CPT, 9 years out of college, living in Hawaii at the time.

I will skew the results as well. I didn't hit 100K until age 53. With some serious saving, a well timed real estate purchase, and an inheritance, at age 60 I am just about to cross the 2 comma mark.legio XX wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2020 8:08 am Wow! Pick up a penny and soon you'll have many.
Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
I think it was around age 26, maybe 26.5. Having a "real" salaried job really helped to accelerate my asset growth. I worked two jobs all through college so student debt was minimal.

About 27 but before this I paid off my and my wife’s student loans and paid for a 3 year old car in cash. Also paid for the wedding and had 2 kids before 27. If I didn’t have student loans or get married I’d probably have had it at 24.

This post is a work of fiction. Any similarity to real financial advice is purely coincidental.
Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
Just a random financial goal I had set for myself, I think back in high school when I first heard about it. I always wanted to make $250k+ as a base salary to meet that - little did I know it would be done with my first real job.AerialWombat wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2020 12:20 amI have found this to be less than it’s cracked up to be. Oh wow... a long time ago... when I was in my mid-20s (decent job and a fairly good local business) ... then divorce happened at 30s ... had to start over again with a new outlook in life. Life happens...
Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
2018, at the age of 28. Have $380k now as a 30 year old and hope to break into $400k at the end of January after bonuses. Was very very hard to finally get all of this though and for me, personally, the high income is unsustainable given the cost of the sacrifices made. Still I am happy that I feel financially secure now and retirement is pretty much funded. If I don't touch this and leave my current 80-20% allocation with 0 contributions, assuming 7% return and 35 more years, I'll have 3.6mm at 65 (knock on wood).

Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
Doesn't the calculation I outlined work out? This assumes I retire at 65 (and work from now until then to just meet costs). I just meant I've reached a point where I don't have to save anymore, so I feel pretty financially secure. Of course, I'm going to keep saving aggressively instead to move that date up.Vihoo wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2020 6:07 pmRetirement funded at 30 w/ $380k?cpan00b wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2020 12:47 pm 2018, at the age of 28. The younger the answer is, the more likely it is directly or indirectly attributable to the parent(s).
I got to 100K at age 27. I lived at home during my University undergrad.

I'm sure the association between those that hit $100k early and those that had their education covered by parents is pretty statistically significant (in this thread and in the general public overall).canadianbacon wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 5:19 amThe younger the answer is, the more likely it is directly or indirectly attributable to the parent(s).

I strongly believe that I am the poorest here. Anyone can dispute that statement, please come forward. I reached the $100,000 at the age of 38. I am now 40 years with a net worth of $210,000. Our combined income is just $136,000.

Re: What age did you reach 100K networth?
I doubt that. Not many, but I've seen posts from people who never made six figures. At 41 (a year ago) our retirement accounts were nearly the same as yours. Things look brighter now, despite moving to a HCOL area, higher pay allows us to save more and still get by, but there were some lean years with only one of us working and getting by on $50k a year with two young kids. Kept the course however and still were saving in retirement those years. Honestly, what has really paid off is the fact we always saved 10-15% and got a match, even when we didn't make much money.
Question for you, if your HH income is $136k now, has it been in that range for a while, or are you like us where that is a recent event in the last couple years. How many times your income from 5 years ago do you have in net worth? It's not realistic to maintain that 3-4 times net worth for a given age when your pay goes up 50% in a short time frame. All good problems to have though, especially if your expectations for expenses remain low you can retire early.

I've always thought that I was among the poorest on this board. My income was $48k in 2016, $60k in 2017, $65k in 2018, and $75k in 2019, while my wife stays home with our toddler. But our net worth is now just a hair under $250k at age 36. I assume I must be in a lower cost of living area than you.BogleMelon wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 10:29 am I strongly believe that I am the poorest here. I love this board. People with 1/4 million in assets competing to see who is "poorest."
I would imagine there are at least a few young people on Bh just starting out who have no savings at all, and certainly no real estate holdings. Bhs are somewhat self-selecting since one would have to have some level of interest in money/finance/investing (though not necessarily high levels of assets) to be here in the first place. People who have very little and expect to have very little are unlikely to be here looking for investment advice.

Most definitely. I was lucky and my parents payed for school. I only really started working after grad school at age 26, 4 years ago, wight around the same time I got married. I worked on and off throughout school to cover "fun" that wasn't covered by the bank of mom and dad and so money in, money out. I had like 8k to my name then.stoptothink wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 9:03 amI'm sure the association between those that hit $100k early and those that had their education covered by parents is pretty statistically significant (in this thread and in the general public overall).canadianbacon wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 5:19 amThe younger the answer is, the more likely it is directly or indirectly attributable to the parent(s).
Since we got married, DW, who also had most of her schooling payed for and had payed off the small amount of debt she did have quickly, and I have gone from ~0 NW to a NW of around 260-280k due to saving 35%+ and big pay bumps. If we had started out with the combined $150-200k of student loan debt that we probably would have amassed if our parents didn't pay for school we would be in a very different place.

Excessive student loans followed by a govt. job that was inadequately compensated followed by a condo purchase in a HCOL area a couple years before the recession hit did a number on me. But with perseverance and luck, and finally becoming financially literate after age 40, am now in much better shape today. So there is hope. The primary saving grace (though also the reason why I didn't think I needed to invest early on) is I stayed with that same govt. agency, got promoted, and the light at the end of the tunnel (pension) in 15 more years should cover my expected expenses in retirement without needing to tap any other investments. I don't expect to hit 6-figure salary for a few more years.

I'm 30 and one of those few with no savings and almost $100k in debt (90% student loans). I work in TV production (currently on hiatus) and deliver UberEats on the side. Not a doctor or lawyer or any high income. I recently had my "sick and tired of being sick and tired" moment and have been turning to blogs like Bogleheads and YouTube channels like Dave Ramsey's "Millionaire Theme Hour" to soak up all the personal finance lessons I didn't learn in high school or at home as a young(er) person. I'm not at all discouraged by the people with "$100k @ age 28, etc." I find this thread and others encouraging and love the fact that people are specific in regards to dollar amounts, naming mutual funds, tax advice, etc. I'm working toward paying off all that $100k in debt as fast as I can, then saving up my first $100k. I'll follow up once I'm there.Admiral wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 11:40 am I love this board. People with 1/4 million in assets competing to see who is "poorest."

Born on third base. Lucky you.Meg77 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2013 4:11 pm Probably around age 15 but I wasn't aware. My grandparents set up a trust for me for college and invested in 100% stocks through the bull of the 80s and 90s; I graduated college in 2006 with around $225K left in the college fund if I remember correctly. Add to that the $17K or so I'd stashed in a Roth IRA since my first job and no debt, and I was on unquestionably good footing for a 22 year old. I invested the trust in real estate (a condo homestead and 5 rentals) and started saving 20% of my income from day one. Now I'm 29 with a net worth of $608K (there were a few more annual exclusion gifts along the way plus a $75K inheritance, but otherwise I've mainly just maxed retirement accounts and let the rentals amortize a little).
