Agree. On one hand, a real murder mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie and the Clue board game. On the other, a subtly hilarious spoof of the genre.

Uncut gems in the theater on Saturday. The pace of the movie is frenetic. The key characters are very unsympathetic. I can't understand what the critics were thinking on this one. Skip it.

Bombshell, in the theater last wednesday. Excellent movie about the sexual harassment by the late Roger Ailes at Fox News of many female anchors including Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly. Great cast, with Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman among many others.

Richard Jewell, in the theater 10 days ago, about a security guard who found a bomb during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, and later becomes a suspect.
The movie trashes the reputation of a deceased journalist with made-up accusations, and also assassinates the investigative methods of the FBI. This is one you should definitely skip.

Saw this one in France over the summer in a theater. I am not sure that it deserved the palme d'or at Cannes. It is very entertaining. But I think it's overdone, and at some point, disbelief can no longer be suspended. I don't want to spoil it so I wont say when in thought that was, except before the half way point. Still worth seeing, but I wish it was a little shorter.

The perspective of the fictional dramatization of the story, as I understood it, was that Kathy, and the FBI agent who leaked false information to her, were in a pre-existing romantic relationship, not a transactional exchange of sex for information.
I saw the movie and it is excellent. Not a minute of screen time is wasted and the performances are wonderful, both leads and supporting roles.

As for the depiction of Kathy Scruggs, I think it's accurate.
I saw the movie, and it clearly implied that information was being exchanged for sex between the FBI agent and journalist. The crude language makes it clear, in the following line attributed to the FBI agent [crude language removed by admin LadyGeek]
She was widely know as a tough woman who hung out in bars with cops and sources, gathering information in unconventional ways. She dressed in a wild way, swore like a sailor, and often had to be reeled in by editors who insisted she work harder on corroborating her stories. I think Wilde is correct to claim her performance doesn't imply Scruggs traded sex for a tip. Scruggs was depicted living a hard life and being a relentless reporter who got the Jewell story very, very wrong.
I certainly didn't know her, but I know what movie I watched, and it clearly implied trading sexual favors for stories.

I loved it for the reasons that you disliked it. One critic called it a throwback to the anti-hero movies that came out in the 70s, he cited Dog Day Afternoon as one example. Adam Sandler's performance was fantastic. I movie that stays with you. Old friends Eric Bogosian and Jud Hirsch are also good in their respective roles.

Good to know. I haven't seen it yet but it was high on my list. Now maybe I'll wait for the streaming version.

Curious if others have seen the same director's film "Snowpiercer"? (Netflix) It has a good IMDB rating. Bong Joon Ho. Looks a bit dark. :?

No Highway in the Sky (1951) James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich, Glynis Johns, Jack Hawkins

An aeronautical engineer and scientist (a “boffin” in British parlance) predicts that a new model of plane will fail catastrophically and in a novel manner after a specific number of flying hours. This film presages the real-life catastrophic de Havilland Comet jet failures. This was the world's first commercial jet airliner.

Somewhat amusing flick, by no means great. The inclusion of Marlene Dietrich was superfluous, in my opinion, as her role had little import to the plot. Probably wanted her to increase box office. Enjoyed seeing Glynis Johns. This is an early film where technology was central to the plot.

The movie reminded me of It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), also starring Jimmy Stewart, as (spoiler) things in his life seemed completely hopeless until the miraculous ending, with several people coming forward with miraculous news and joy all around right at the end.

We saw it on network television.

Poppy (1936) W.C. Fields, Catherine Doucet, Rochelle Hudson, Richard Cromwell

Carny con artist and snake-oil salesman Eustace McGargle tries to stay one step ahead of the sheriff but is completely devoted to his beloved daughter Poppy.

Fields is perfect as McGargle, conning and ripping people off as usual, this time in 1883. The scene with the talking dog is priceless. Includes the usual cloying romance as is typical for all these 1930s comedies. Rochelle Hudson is fetching and a good singer. Not Fields’s best but definitely not to be missed either. Recommended. We own the DVD.

I went to see Terminator: Dark Fate in a second-run theater. For various reasons, the first two Terminator movies have sentimental significance for me, and I've actively avoided the next three Terminator movies, but I decided I wanted to see Dark Fate. While I could see some of the flaws I had heard about, I really enjoyed the movie (particularly Linda Hamilton) and am glad I went to see it in the theater.

Star Wars Rise of Skywalker – took me two weeks to actually see this and words cannot describe how much I hated it. Seriously, aside from Ep1, this was the worst SW film yet.
Little Women – Probably the best overall movie I’ve seen in 2019. Great story, acting, everything. Seriously, go see it.
Ip Man 4 – I love these movies but was this bad. The kung fu was awesome because it's Donnie Yen but this has to be the worst story, acting, casting I’ve ever seen in a movie of any kind on the big screen. The super racist white people were funny though. I’d see it if you like Donnie Yen, otherwise don’t bother.
Togo – Disney+ movie about the true story of a crazy sled dog run to save a town in Alaska in the 1910s. We liked it because we love dogs but Willem Dafoe was the lead and he’s always awesome
Zombieland Doubletap – about as good as the first one. Harrelson makes these movies IMO, he’s awesome. I generally hate zombie flicks but these were both alright
Code 8 – B level movie about people with powers who try and rob a bank. Watchable but not really that good, story had potential but was poorly executed.

I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on a flight yesterday. If the flight hadn't been so long I'd probably complain that its 2 hr 40 min. But I won't.

I enjoyed it overall. Good acting by DiCaprio and Pitt. I found Pitt's character much more likable. It helped me to have been of age in the time depicted otherwise you might not understand some of what went on and who the other characters are. Even so Tarantino's liberty with the actual happenings to advance his "Once upon a time ..." adds confusion.

I recommend it. Actually one of my 2019 favorites. I'll go back and see what else Pitt has done.

Finally saw Joker. Outstanding. A real movie not just a comic book movie.
Shows how/why troubled Arthur turns into the Joker, and where other people's and 'the System's' actions and inactions contributed.
IMO does a good job on the fine line between explaining vs excusing him. Yes he has terrible provocations, but he does also actively embrace evil. Yes we have choice, but we are also never entirely free of shaping our experiences, history, nature either.
Very powerful, slow build. Incredible acting, where you only see the true rage fully exposed for just a few seconds at a critical moment.
DOn't have to be a big comic book or cartoon fan. Just the barest minimum pop culture knowledge of Joker as being a big Batman villain and Batman's origin as orphaned-by-murder rich kid Bruce Wayne is needed to get it -- everything else is developed here from the ground up.

Makes me want to go watch Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, two of its acknowledged influences, neither of which have I ever seen in full.

Also rewatched Midnight Special with Michael Shannon, from about 5 years ago IIRC. Very atmospheric, mostly minimalist film about a father's love for his very 'different' son structured as a sort of 'chase' movie (pursued by both a cult-ish church and the feds for different reasons). Keeps you guessing quite a while whether it is supposed to be supernatural, scifi, or what exactly. One of those movies where everything isn't fully explained, but it doesn't have to be. Also has great supporting cast: Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver and smaller part by Sam Shepard. Plus the child actor does a great job.

Richard Jewell.

It reminds you why the media was and remains untrustworthy. It accurately portrays how the FBI in league with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution conducted a witch hunt while the real bomber at the 1996 Olympics stayed on the lam for seven years. Even Janet Reno admitted this failure.

Oh yes, the media critics don't like it? What a surprise.

The movie's only flaw is that it did not mention the successful defamation lawsuits Richard Jewell brought against NBC, the NY Post, CNN, etc.

Little Women. I know next-to-nothing about the book. I enjoyed the movie very much; it was beautifully filmed and emotionally powerful.

My quibbles: the mother, played by Laura Dern, seems too saintly for this world; and the movie skips back and forth in time, and I lost track of the chronology about 2/3rds in.

I heard part of an interview with the director (Greta Gerwig) today in which she observed that Little Women and other female coming-of-age novels are typically considered light fare, while male coming-of-age books like Catcher in the Rye and A Separate Peace are viewed more seriously (I recall those books being assigned reading in my high school English classes, but not Little Women). Having never read Little Women, and having long since forgotten the contents of the boy books, I have no basis for an evaluation of their relative quality, but it seems a fair point.

Oh man, this one was bad. Watched it earlier in the week with the wife, 4/10 is very generous. I understand it is supposed to be cheesy unbelievable action (in the vein of John Wick, also not my jam, but way better than this garbage), but you can at least attempt to string together a cohesive story. And some of the dialogue; who wrote that nonsense?
You make an interesting point that got me thinking. If perfectly distributed, ratings on a scale of 1-10 would produce 50% at 5 or below and 50% at 6 or above. I have found with ratings in general, things follow more of a bell curve with an upward bias. If you look at popular rating sites for movies (IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes) and even critics reviews, I think you will find the distribution isn't close to even. Then, of course, you have all the movies I didn't watch because I had no interest or the reviews were terrible which I don't/cannot include in my ratings system.

I'm not sure what you meant when you said 'the tone of the movie' with Hanks... but guess I will find out when I see it.
I do remember a scene - perhaps it was in the documentary on Rogers - where they showed the Candid Camera thing the hotel. I believe that was in the last years of his life. Yes, he was completely fine with everything that was sub-standard and going all wrong. :happy
I'd love to know your thoughts if you happen to see the movie. I had never seen the Candid Camera episode until you mentioned it and it was sooo very Mr. Rogers in that moment. Truly a great human being. I dont want to ruin the story of the movie because I didnt know much about it going in and it was a different story than what I expected it to be. I think thats what my wife didnt like about it.

BTW, big shout out to all of those old cartoons. I miss the days of excellent cartoons on Saturday morning. We need a Johnny Quest reboot. :sharebeer
I could never figure out why mom and dad laughed at the wrong times in Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Enjoyed Knives Out; Christopher Plummer and his nurse were great; complicated plot requiring concentration. You can wait until it comes out on streaming. Enjoyed The Irishman; typical Scorcese; Joe Pesci best I have seen him in years. DeNiro and Pacino good as I expected.

Psychological thriller. Foreign. 7.8 IMDB.

Kanopy summary: Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family…
Two versions exist. The one above and an American made version with 007 in the lead role. Both are good.

The book was a favorite of mine in my pre and early teens.

Motherless Brooklyn was an excellent film with some great performances. It is the story of a detective who investigates the murder of his only friend.

Abominable - very cute movie. Adults and kids will find this enjoyable.

Frozen 2 - It was ok once they got to the actual story line. Overall it felt like Disney was trying to milk a few more bucks out of this franchise before it fades away.
May the Force be with you.
