Most "vanguard like" HSA provider

Post by Dink2018 » Mon Dec 02, 2019 11:00 pm

I'm super happy at Vanguard. I don't see that they offer HSA accounts. What HSA provider would be the most similar to Vanguard. I'm planning on buying Vanguard funds anyway, I just mean from the business perspective, least likely to do a "wells fargo" and create fake accounts to defraud people.

I am in the process of transferring my company provided HSA (quarterly fees, etc) to Fidelity. Take a look at their offering.

There's a long running Fidelity HSA thread.

No fees. No commissions on Fidelity mutual funds, Treasuries, stocks, or ETFs.

Was at Saturna. Moved to Fidelity earlier this year. Happy with that decision.

I use Lively which allows me to invest my funds through TD Ameritrade. I'm happy there, but if I was setting it up today I'd go with Fidelity.

I imagine there are a host of HSA's that allow you to buy ETF's commission free now days with zero minimums to be held in cash. Lively definitely does and Fidelity has the zero cost TSM so that's nice too. Can't go wrong either way. I was familiar with TDA in a past life so I went with Lively the second they said no bank fees, and then just recently the brokerage world went commission free on ETF's so that is also nice.

Don't forget that an HSA is not about just no-commission index fund/ETF investing. It is also about ease of contributions and ease of using the money to make qualified payments and tracking of all of that stuff.

Except for sentiment, there is very little reason anymore to prefer Vanguard over Fidelity for index funds in an HSA account.

I was with Saturna- but switched to Fidelity. I only use the Fidelity Zero expense index funds in my Fidelity HSA. I do all of my other investing at Vanguard.

Just switched jobs and moved my old HSA to Fidelity. It took about 2 weeks (I blame the prior custodian) but 'twas painless.

Fidelity.

I've used a few of them in the past - OptumBank, Further, etc etc...every single one was such a bad website interface.

Hidden/poorly labeled links to move funds from HSA over to Investment Account, and then to get the actual funds invested.

Vanguard is know for low costs and honesty but poor service.
Fidelity is known for honesty and good service and somewhat higher costs. However, they have been lowering costs on some things to compete with Vanguard on costs, including index funds and definitely including this HSA. As weird as it might sound, the Vanguard of HSAs is Fidelity. Lively is a close second and 3rd and 4th are likely HSA Bank and HSA Administrators.

Good points, livesoft. Based on these requirements, would you recommend a HSA provider other than Fidelity or Lively?

I initiated the transfer from Healthequity to Fidelity about 2 weeks ago and still nothing. From what I gather, it is healthequity that is the issue.

I have used neither of them, so I have no experience on that. I will probably switch my HSA to Fidelity since I already have a few accounts at Fidelity.

I switched from HSA bank to Fidelity and don't see any reason to switch to Vanguard if they start providing HSA.

It takes longer than 2 weeks for that to get processed.

Are there any tricks to getting around Optum’s transfer fee when going to fidelity?

I was reasonably happy with Optum but moved to Fido earlier this year. It took about two weeks during which I was out of the market. Someone posted a strategy to avoid the transfer fee but I didn’t bother.
