On Boots: Chukka, Chelsea and brands

Post by get_g0ing » Sat Nov 30, 2019 4:11 pm

Hi,

And a couple of questions on boots:

1. What would be some recommended reliable brands? Any experience with or comments on Thursday Boots?

2. Between the Chelsea and Chukka styles, which would you consider more versatile? In terms of dressing up and dressing down.

Thanks.

In USAF Basic training in 1969 I was issued a pair of "Chukka boots". Still have them and wear them on occasion in the snow.

1. I've had good experience with Clarks over the years.

2. Not sure about more versatile, but I prefer the appearance of the chukkas.

I just had my 5 year old red wing chukkas resoled. I guess that means I like them. Clarks are good. You could also go down the rabbit hole on reddit and checkout r/malefashionadvice and r/goodyearwelt.

I have some timberland chukkas I love. They look better on my feet than in this picture.

They must be Alden. Handmade in Massachusetts.

Not inexpensive, but the cordovan are worth it. Trust me.

My personal preference is Frye boots, specifically the ones they make which are hand made in the USA. You can get them well discounted from $150-200 (MSRP $400-500) from sites like lastcall, 6pm and saksoff5th. They are extremely well built.

You'll probably get better responses on reddit, styleforum, etc.

I like both chukkas and chelseas but have drifted over to chelsea boots lately mainly due to ease of getting on/off. I think either can be versatile and depends more on the individual shoe. There can be casual or dressy versions of either boot.

I've had a pair of Red Wings chukkas (Style 3141) for a few years and still look great. Made in USA too. Probably last a lifetime for me.

I have Thursday Chukkas. They are fantastic. They are my first pair of leather boots so I don't really have anything to compare them to, but the craftsmanship is excellent and the price was right. I bought them 4-5 years ago and no issues whatsoever.

Chelsea boots are tied with monk strap as the ugliest current trend in men's shoes. I do have two pairs of Chukkas, Clark's and Banana Republic that I got for a fraction of retail (both <$30), and am satisfied with both.

Years ago I bought leather boots (with steel toes) at Walmart for only $24, and use them for lawn mowing and snow blowing. They are comfortable and do not seem to wear.

If you're looking for USA made boots, I would recommend not doing online buying and check the tags. I was looking specifically for some USA made work boots or hiking boots (something for my chainsaw work) and went everywhere from Bob's to Red Wing and found that the vast majority of former US made boots had Made in China tags in them. I was sort of surprised to find this at a Red Wing store, where I literally checked the tag on every single boot on display. Not a single US made one. Only the top Chippewa boots at Bob's were made in the US. A number of boot boxes had American flags on them that I feel were purposely deceptive as the tags clearly showed they weren't made here.

I bought a pair of Clark's chukka boots at DSW for $60. They are a great style and seem to be durable. I wear them 3-5 times a week to work at an office and they still look new....although admittedly I'm not very hard on shoes....
