VTWAX/VTWSX availability at Fidelity

Post by yogesh » Sat Nov 09, 2019 5:58 pm

Anyone here with VTWSX or VTWAX holding at Fidelity? One taxable account popped up and we prefer mutual funds over ETFs and I was looking for a broad diversified world index fund at Fidelity.

Not available. VT is your VTWAX option free of fees.

Unfortunately no free option for the mutual fund. I have my HSA at fidelity and just replicate VTWAX with Fidelity tickers FSKAX (US) and FZILX (Int’l) according to the latest weights of the FTSE Global All Cap Index (updated monthly).

You'll just have to use VT. I think Fidelity has free trades now?

Thanks,
So no one grandfathered VTWSX? I guess I am left with VT
I don’t like the ETFs due to
- Can’t add automatic investments
- No fractional shares; leaves money in core
- Bid/ask spread, low volume and market order scare

It’s closed to new investors in favor of the admiral shares. You can still hold it and maybe still buy it? No benefit over admiral at this point. You can probably buy the admiral fund for a fee at fidelity, which I’m sure you want to avoid. It’s either VT or constructing your own emulation of the total world mutual fund with a 55% US / 45% International combo and paying attention to see if that allocation drifts under the world cap

You can’t even do that.

Taking a quick look at the Vanguard individual investor site, they don't even list VTWSX anymore, at least not that I could find. So while you may be able to hold it, I don't see any way to buy more. And it wouldn't surprise me if Vanguard were to migrate existing VTWSX holders to VTWAX shares.

Why not hold it at Vanguard?

I believe that is exactly what they will do at some point for all the closed investor shares. As I recall, you could manually convert the day they all closed, and there was a message about a scheduled transition at some point in the future if you decided not to.

+1

If you have the opportunity to move to Vanguard VTWAX is super simple. Otherwise VT is your only option.

If you don't want ETFs, why not just hold two or three Fidelity funds that would result in about the same allocation as VTWSX/VT? I think the Fidelity equivalents would cost even less than VTWAX (0.10% ER) and certainly less than VTWSX (0.17% ER). Of course, only Vanguard mutual funds are as tax efficient as their ETFs, so I guess there would be some added tax cost in going with the Fidelity funds in a taxable account.

As noted the other option to avoid ETFs would be to transfer account to Vanguard and buy VTWAX.

I also prefer mutual funds to ETFs, if it were me, I'd go with one of those options. Of course, I am already managing about 20 mutual funds in about 6 different accounts for my wife and I...

You can even use the Fidelity Zero fee funds (FZROX, Fidelity Zero Total Market Index (domestic), & FZILX, Fidelity Zero International Index).

Let me give that a try with the following combination:
FZROX: Fidelity ZERO Total Market Index Fund
FZILX: Fidelity ZERO Total International Index Fund
FMBIX: Fidelity Municipal Bond Index Fund

If that's all in a taxable account, I wouldn't recommend the ZERO funds. They are not portable.

Fidelity has FSKAX, their total market fund that isn't proprietary , which as expense ratio of .015%. I use that one. You can use ftihx for international coverage which as an expense ratio of .06%. That covers 8306 stocks , which is actually more than vanguards world stock that holds 8135 stocks. Unless I messed up my math somewhere you would get more coverage at slightly cheaper expense ratio than vanguards world stock option.

I just moved it to Vanguard and bought more of VTMFX to keep my IPS simple for spouse to manage without much work.
  • Checking/Emergency: FDIC Cash/CD
  • Taxable: VTMFX (Vanguard Tax Managed Balanced)
  • 401K: VFORX (Vanguard Retirement 2040 Index Fund)
