Of course the iPhone 6 came out 5 years ago, so it got 4 years worth of iOS updates, which is pretty good compared to other manufacturers. Android phones usually only get operating system updates for 2 years.

OK, I upgraded to ios13. I can see some new tweaks, but so far nothing "gee whiz". I'm wondering if I'm missing any obvious big improvements?

If you have an older iPhone, hasn't it become slow yet?

The new iPad software had me wondering how much longer (or how close are we) to iPad completely replacing a Mac in terms of being able to connect the iPad to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse when needed.

I don't own an iPad, but I don't think multitasking is quite there yet. Also if websites treat iPadOS as a mobile device, then the browsing experience is going to be sub par. I would not want to have an app for each website. I tend to keep the number of apps I download to a minimum because of privacy/security concerns. Most people selling apps outsource the development of those apps, so even they don't know what the app is really doing underneath. We shouldn't need an app to get an improved browsing experience for every website. For instance, I don't have apps for my bank, brokerage, employers email, etc. on my phone. I do all that work on my mac via a browser. I just counted -- I have a total of 12 non-Apple apps on my iPhone.

iPadOS natively loads the desktop version of websites now. Websites think you are connecting from desktop safari.

Multitasking is also greatly improved. Slideover now has unlimited apps that you can cycle between on the side, and split screen is also improved. You can use it with any app (or multiple of the same app, like two safari pages), or one safari page and one document page.

Between the improvements and an apple smart keyboard, I can't remember the last time I used my actual laptop. In fact, I doubt I'll ever replace it. I will just buy a very cheap desktop for emergencies to keep in the office.

It was also the last phone with 1 GB of RAM, so there is some speculation that newer devices like the 6S and SE will continue to receive updates much longer.

Thank you, Apple, for the silencing unknown callers feature. I also go for dark mode whenever it's available, so that was a welcome addition. Way easier on the eyes.

13.1.1 is working fine for me so far. I may have to replace my battery soon, though...

Wish I could go back to 12.

Just installed IOS 13.1.2 to iPad and everything seems to be fine. Will have to poke around a bit and see what’s new and what I can use.

Some lesser features that are worth getting set up:

1. Silence unknown caller is my favorite new feature. If you don't have a contact for the number, it goes straight to voicemail.

I looked at this and thought about it. But what happens when I order an Uber and the driver wants to contact me? So I untangled Silence.

I called Vanguard for the first time ever. The rep had to call me back and I didn’t receive the call because of silence unknown callers. Turned it off and haven’t looked back. There is a feature with many cell providers where they will block calls at the source that have suspicious origin. That’s dramatically dropped my spam calls.

How long ago did you install it? Typical a day or two after install this happens then goes back to normal.

Foolishly, I installed them when they came out, 4+ days ago.

Never had this level of battery drain with any other iOS update ... but it seems that I'm in the minority as least here.

I updated both my iPhone 6S+ and iPad Air 2 yesterday. Things are working well and I see many minor but very nice usability updates. Safari has some really nice changes on the iPad and practically all the standard Apple apps have been updated by a little or a lot. I use just about all the Apple ecosystem apps (numbers, pages, notes, mail, reminders, and many others) so it’s noticeable to me. Not bad for not so new devices.

Summary: So far, I think this is a very good major iOS update. I also look forward to trying out Sign In with Apple in the near future.

I'm very pleased with the call silencing feature that you can enable for all those spam calls. I like not being awoken in the morning with those calls. That's a start. But why not go further? I'm hoping in future iOS releases there's an option to not even see the "missed call" notification. Just show the red number indicator on the top right of the phone icon app.

Have you had calls blocked that weren't telemarketers (from people not in your contacts)? I'm a medical director of a large paramedic fire service (800 firefighters). I don't have all of them in my contacts, and I'm afraid if I activate the blocked call feature, that some of their calls will end up blocked.

This feature is not useful for your circumstances. It’s a not a robocaller blocker. It’s a simple logical function (if in contacts, ring, otherwise directly to voicemail). You might consider an app/service that tries to block if number is in their robocaller database. Your cell service provider may also offer similar service. You may have to pay.

I just noticed a change in the iOS 13 Mail app that I think was a very good idea on Apple's part. Up to now, when I wanted to delete a bunch of messages, I either had to slide them manually one at a time or use a klunky workaround to do a "batch" delete. Apple has now added an "edit" button to allow multiple selections and a "Trash" selection to do a simple batch delete. Perhaps not earth-shaking, but definitely a step in the direction of better usability.

That feature existed in previous versions. I've been using it probably for the whole four years that I've had an iPhone, up through iOS 12; haven't upgraded to 13 yet.

"Bugs" have been around since the beginning of software. They aren't going away. What's changed is now we have the technology to reliably put out updates quickly over the air. In the past those bugs might not have been fixed for years (if ever). That's pretty amazing to this now aging IT guy who in college distributed software on 9 track mag tape carried in a special suitcase. I love the quick updates but still can't get over 200MB apps that do very little. Fixed point arithmetic is a lost art.

Yes I know there's no such thing as perfect software (I made this very point in another thread). My point here was that iOS 13 has been buggier than usual; 13.2.2 is already the 9th version, less than 2 mos after the initial release. iOS 12 was more focused on quality and performance. At the same point in its life it was only on the 3rd release (12.1).

Click on the top of the conversations (where the pictures or initials of people in group are), then click "info". Below the 3 contacts already in the group will be a "add contact" option. Select that. Choose the new person. Click done.

To maybe answer my own question: it appears that if all the recipients are iPhone users with “iMessage”, you can add. But if some are Android, then you can’t add users.

iOS 13.3 became available today. Since I enjoy living on the bleed edge, I've already updated an iPhone and iPad without issue. Glad to be able to turn off the Memoji nonsense (absurdity, ...).

The biggest feature for 13.3 IMO is the support for physical security keys yubikey (https://support.yubico.com/support/solu ... ted-on-ios)
