Looking for a new sedan.

Post by andy8921 » Wed Oct 09, 2019 9:10 pm

I currently own a 2010 Infiniti G37x with 164,0000 miles on it. The car has been extremely reliable and enjoyable to drive, but I am ready for something different. I am looking for a new or certified preowned sedan in the 30-40k range with the latest safety features in addition to Apple Car Play and Adaptive Cruise Control. After test driving several vehicles, I have located a 2019 Lexus ES350 with 12,500 miles on it (it was in the Lexus corporate fleet) and a clean Carfax report. The MSRP on the vehicle brand new is $47,332. Invoice on a new vehicle with these specs is $43,972. Is $36,000 exclusive of tax and title a good deal or should I keep looking? Lexus has $2500 in customer cash if I were to purchase this vehicle new, but even assuming I could negotiate a price around 5% below invoice before applying the customer cash, it is unlikely I could purchase this car new for significantly less than $40,000. Is $36,000 a sufficient savings to justify the purchase of a used car or am i better off continuing my search or purchasing new? As an aside, I did look at the 2019 Toyota Avalon, which has the same engine and similar styling. I did not enjoy the driving experience in the Avalon compared to the Lexus (much noisier cabin and engine is tuned differently) and had a difficult time finding the Avalon in one of the lower trim levels in my area, making the vehicle almost the same price as the Lexus. Since the difference in price between the two vehicles is relatively small, I prefer paying a slight premium for the driving experience in the Lexus. Anyone out there own the new ES350? Thoughts or comments on the vehicle? Any other sedans in this price range worth considering? Thanks in advance for your help.

Update from my old post viewtopic.php?f=2&t=146906&start=50:

"I bought a Lexus LS 460, 2012 model CPO with 41000 miles. It had just completed a 3 yr lease. It was listed at 46 K and I got it for 40,200 (40,000 and 200 documentation fee, plus tax and plates). I have been using it now for the last 3-4 weeks and we both like it. Paid cash. There was no trade in. My old vehicle (Avalon 2006 model) went to my daughter."

I think you can get a better price. I would prefer to buy new rather than the price you mentioned. I am happy with my LS. It is a big, stable, quiet and reliable car. Not sporty.

Are you talking about 2019 used vs 2020 new or 2019 new?

How many dealers near you? In a competitive market, it should be easy to get below $40k on a 2019 and with low/slow sedan sales and incentives, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get a remaining one for substantially less. A few thousand off for a year old vehicle and mileage with wear and tear isn't a deal IMO. I doubt it's doable now, but if you're not in a hurry, I'm guessing you could get a 2020 for under $40k in 3-4 months when season sales slow down and if the economy slows, even better deals.

For that kind of money, definitely consider a Tesla Model 3. Free gas everywhere on http://www.PlugShare.com Ask a friend who has one for a test drive.
