How to connect various old hard drives

Post by newbie003 » Tue Oct 08, 2019 9:51 am

My parents recently pulled 3 old (I think at least one is from the 90s) hard drives (various ages and probably types) from 3 old desktops and before I start googling each one to find the best/easiest way to connect it to a new computer (just so I can try and browse the old drive/wipe it), is there perhaps one item (a docking station or something) that might work with almost any/all older drives?

I don't yet have the drives in front of me, but am told they are:

Caviar 1210
Caviar 33220
WD Sata WD6400AAKS

Once I have the drives I'll confirm all this and hit google but, again, just wondering if there's a 'one size fits all' product/cable that might work?

Thanks!

Yes, there are SATA/IDE to USB drive adapters available. Many brands, so should be cheap. Basically it has the internal hookups for the older drives, and turns them into a USB drive. Just attach them one at a time, access them, then shut down and get the next one.

Cost should be less than $20 for the adapter. They should sell them at MicroCenter, Amazon, and Best Buy.

There are also units with a shell that you can mount them into if you want to make them permanent. But it's usually not worth it for size / reliability reasons.

Cheapest solution would be from an adapter like this

Other option is to use a power drill to poke a few holes in the drives and give to Staples for recycling.

If you're just wanting to discard the drives there are ways of wiping the data (large magnet) or rendering the drive inoperable (literally just take it apart with a screwdriver).

If the drive is really old and you want to get data off it - assume the drive will only power-on once and then die. So be prepared to get all the data off in one go.
