New iPhone on sale for $599.99

Post by catdude » Mon Sep 16, 2019 1:59 am

Just FYI and FWIW.... Amazon has the new iPhone 11 on sale for $599.99 (standard version / 64 GB).... savings of $100. You'll have to use Simple Mobile as your carrier.

https://www.amazon.com/Simple-Mobile-Ap ... ics&sr=1-3

Not sure if I'm going to go for this deal or not. I'm pretty happy with my iPhone 7, don't feel a real burning desire to upgrade.

That is so much money for a cell phone. Doesn't seem worth it at all.

Clearly you did not look at pricing of any of the earlier iPhones. IIRC, X was already thousand dollars, I dont recall what was XR selling for.

I think it is ludicrous what the charge for phones these days. Just because this is "cheaper" than previous versions, it does not make it a good deal.

It might be worth waiting for Apple to come out with 5G before you buy a new phone if you can wait:

Not very exciting. Die-hard Apple fans will buy it no matter what just because it's new, however.

The long wait is over. Apple introduced its 2019 line of smartphones Tuesday, and pre-orders have now started.

Sadly, the latest lineup brings nothing new to the table. Like previous devices, the iPhone 11 features technology that has been available to Android users for some time.

Considering the multitude of tasks a modern cell phone performs, its a bargain.

If you use it only to make phone calls, I do agree with you. I recently noticed that my phone had tracked the amount of activity on my phone. I have averaged 13 hours a day. Thankfully, quite a bit is for things like navigation, podcasts, and such that happen while I am doing other things. But I basically use my “phone” for everything. Have mostly retired a dozen devices since getting the last iPhone. I am annoyed when there is a function that require me to use a desktop computer, scanner, TV, etc to complete the task.

It's not just a cell phone.. It's a GPS device, a great camera, a media device (for podcasts, etc.), a computer...

People can get a pretty long life out of an iPhone, I know a couple of people who still use iPhone 6's (which were released 5 years ago). Some people don't have a traditional computer, but rather use their iPhone and/or iPad for all of their computing needs.

iPhones typically are not loaded up with junk (like a Samsung phone on Verizon) which makes them less reliable and supportable. Because Apple controls the environment and have an installed base of hundreds of millions, there are few problems with updates and if there any are they can be remedied quickly.

Yes, you pay a bit of a premium for Apple mobile devices (iPhones and iPads) but it is worth it for a lot of people.

All that said, I usually pay full price for my devices and am not locked into a specific carrier. I use Ting and the monthly combined bill for my wife and I averages less than $25.

As an adroid fan I got a laugh out of that last part. My wife got a free battery replacement in her i-6 about 18 months ago and refuses to upgrade as she prefers the smaller size phone. To each his/her own. :dollar

What premium? The main competitor to iPhone is the Samsung Galaxy. The iPhone 11 is $699 (64gb) or $749 (128gb) and the Galaxy S10e is $750 (128gb) or $850 (256gb). While the Google Pixel 3A XL is $480 (64gb) may be a cheaper option, it doesn't have the cameras, processors, and software iPhone has.

I guess I must be not doing something on my phone - not sure that is the case though. I have a Moto G6, very heavy user. Never an issue, GPS, Podcasts, and using my phone for most things.

I think it is the camera is the big selling point of iPhone. There is also a new ultra wide band chip in it. I’ve read a couple of articles where the author thinks this is a big deal. For me, I don’t know. I’ll be keeping my iPhone 7 for a while.

It’s really not TBH. If you consider you can likely get a completely reasonable amount of cell service for $30/mo, and then $600 for a phone which is $25/mo for 24 months, its $55 a month for a cell phone. That isn’t unreasonable IMO.

Sure you can always go cheaper, but for most things you can always go cheaper. My cell phone is the most used thing in my life, why the objection to having a nice one?

As I age my eyes and ears are not like in my 20s. My Moto G7 I paid $260 is at the latest Android level, works great with Bluetooth, Waze, this forum, and all my financial accounts. I own Apple stock and appreciate your help in making it rise.

Although it does seem expensive for a phone consider this:

My wife and I were having a conversation about finances. I go paid my bonus early due to our company changing hands. So while discussing it with her, on my Iphone, I transferred money from our checking to savings. Paid for our condo next month for our vacation and paid off the balance of our paypal account.

All of that took a mere 30 seconds to accomplish. We thought, wow, 20 years ago that would have taken weeks through snail mail to complete the same tasks, or a drive or two to the bank or phone call to these various businesses to get pay off balances. But I was able to accomplish it sitting on my deck on a Sunday afternoon drinking a beer. Then I went back to my podcast. LOL.

If you take this into account, $599 seems pretty cheap for something that can do that.

In fairness, you can do all of that with a $49 phone. The difference is the experience.

I just find it amusing on a site where most users are worth >$1M, probably about 99% are in the top 1% net worth in the world, that a $600 phone purchase would cause any debate/discussion at all.. It's less than a drop in the bucket.. And can be re sold for 50% value in a couple years..

Meanwhile I just had to purchase a new jitter bug for $75 my elderly father for emergency use only...

It's more expensive than a flip phone but 1,000x more capable. It's a deal and not worth the debate.

The $599 price-point is really deceptive. $599 is with a trade-in. Without the trade-in it's $999 for the 64GB or $1149 for 256GB, which is perfectly in-line with previous generations.

What if auto-manufacturers advertised car-prices assuming a $10k trade-in?

I don't see the point of paying more for a phone. There isn't a feature on $600+ phones that I can't do on my cheaper phone. I used to be that person (so I get it), but then realized I can do everything on my lower cost phones and stopped buying the high-end ones.

Some people see the value in brand name, enhanced user experience, etc. I just don't see that here. I have no issues if others are happy dropping that much on a phone, but there are plenty of less expensive options that most people wouldn't even be able to distinguish.

Another g6 user. I have no idea what I am missing as well because I've never had a single issue of any kind with the phone in almost 1.5yrs. Modern "budget" phones are pretty incredible, I am always curious to know if those who say that a ~$200 phone doesn't meet their needs have ever actually used one? My tech junkie wife who works in data security and is on her phone almost every waking second uses a $150 moto g7 play and has never had a single issue. Previously she was provided iphones every 2yrs, but she requested going to android after she had has some consistent issues and that is what they gave her. She was [angry -- mod oldcomputerguy] at first that they cheaped out, now she doesn't care because it does everything she needs.

Whatever premium there is for iOS over android to get better data privacy and security from viruses, malware etc. is worth every penny to me.

You mean you are not an active duty member, who is also a firefighter, currently leasing from this company, who also graduate from collage in the last 6 months and also donating another car to cars for change? Some of the low prices that get posted are at the level where I am not sure a single person in the US actually qualifies for them.....

hahahahahaha.....

My "new" phone is an iPhone 5s that I bought last year when our company changed email systems where my perfectly good 4s had to be replaced. Found that I needed at least ios 12, then searched for the oldest iPhone that would do that. 5s. Bought it used at Best Buy for like $150, then a case and new sim card. Under $200. Company reimbersed me.

[Comment removed by moderator oldcomputerguy] You can buy phones just as capable but without the hipster logo for a lot less.
Nor is it 1000x more capable as the primary function of a phone is making calls and texting.
It's a "deal" alright - for Apple.

First let me clarify, I'm not buying a new iPhone.
Second, your own personal opinion is just that [deleted]. Value is in the eye of the beholder.
Third, by your response, you are not in the market for a smartphone (most people use their phones for a LOT more than just making and receiving calls)

The iPhone is now one of the least expensive flagship phones.

To put it in perspective, a brand new iPhone is now a fraction of the price of most other minor luxuries in this country including but not limited to:
owning a television, laptop, desktop, air conditioning, electricity, cable tv, or going out to eat 3-4x a year, maintaining a decent landscape or lawn at your house, the cost of fuel for a slightly less fuel efficient vehicle (never mind buying a "nice" car, I'm talking just fuel alone)

I bet in the past, folks have paid more for a personal computer than the cost of the iPhone.

And the iPhone most likely gave you more bang for your buck. Probably holds true for current desktops/laptops vs the iPhone.

the iPhone, solely for its ability to be used as a phone, is probably not even a reason why people buy them.

People can get a pretty long life out of an iPhone, I know a couple of people who still use iPhone 6's (which were released 5 years ago). Some people don't have a traditional computer, but rather use their iPhone and/or iPad for all of their computing needs.
hahahahahaha.....

The camera on that phone is so bad I'd pay the $599 for the photo and video quality alone on a newer iPhone (2017 on up)

I'm a tech person and don't mind spending some money on stuff (multiple computers - Linux, Windows 10 and Apple) but yeah I have a tough time spending a lot on a phone. And sure, I appreciate all of the stuff it does. I now use mine daily for Waze, radio.com/MLB.com (so I can listen to shows/games while using the traffic app on CarPlay), email, etc.

But I'm also one of those people who still use the iPhone 6. Not sure when I got it but its been a while. I did take advantage of the $29 battery replacement. I'll get a new phone soon, maybe within the next year although I'd like to keep the cost to $500. Phones can break too easily and get stolen. My computers don't leave my house and often give me ~10 years of service.

I'm the same way with cars. Since I can't control who parks next to them, or when they get in accidents/totaled that aren't of my doing I buy a new one and keep it a good 10 years and avoid the expensive cars (i.e., pay under $25K for them).

I find the "smart" phones invaluable while traveling, especially overseas. I'm not really a phone caller, or even a big text person/facetime user. And typing on it is a pain.

Every iPhone thread on bogleheads...

Boglehead #1: check out this iPhone deal.

Boglehead #2: wait, what?! I have a drawer of perfectly good Nokia flip phones. Why would anyone ever pay for a smart phone? Get off my lawn!

Boglehead #3: argh! Apple fanboys. Get an android.

Boglehead #4: runs actual cost and feature comparisons and explains why some people would be perfectly happy to buy a new iPhone.

Rinse, repeat.

I was a long time Android user but happily switched to the iphone. Here is why:
- when apple update their iOS, the app makers only have to update it once so you always get the best updates first. Since android is run on different brands (samsung, LG etc) OS update will render some of your app useless AND you have to wait for the app makers to update their app but it may not work perfectly for your brand of phone. This is especially true if you use enterprise level app.
- if I am an app developer I would focus my energy on iOS first because of the user base, and the almost certain that my app will work on all iphones of previous several generations
- enterprise apps are always available first and better supported on iphones
- you can have the latest tech on android but if you have to deal with the above it is infinitely annoying

It might be worth waiting for Apple to come out with 5G before you buy a new phone if you can wait:

5G is years away from being available to the overwhelming majority of America, geographically. It is going to be much more of a house-based network than cell, too.

I would happily pay the big bucks for any flagship phone, if they just let you keep the thing a little longer (extended OS security updates). The cost of the phone doesn't bother me at all, if I knew I'd get at least 5-6 years of security updates so it was safe to use. The wastefulness of how soon this $800-1k+ purchase becomes an obsolete brick drives me nuts, compared to the usage I get from a car, computer, TV, etc.

While Apple fans will say Apple does, many acknowledge that may not continue in future, so really no lasting value from either tech platform.

People who tout that the price is justified because the device is long lasting may want to watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XneTBhRPYk

This is the type of company who will invent a different type of screw solely to make the device harder to repair to "encourage" people to buy new devices.

It’s not about long lasting. It’s about what you like. I like having a nice phone operating on iOS. Everyone here spends money on something other’s think is foolish.

Some people pay someone to mow their lawn while other’s do it themselves. Some people buy self propelled gas or electric lawn mowers others pay less to skip that feature to save a little money. Others too think its ridiculous one would spend money on a powered mower when you could get a nice reel mower. Some odd balls would say why have any lawn mower at all, just get a goat. And still other’s would say “live in an apartment let someone else worry about it.”

And just to clarify, the people who have the goat are the same one’s still claiming to use a Motorola StarTAC.

That is so much money for a cell phone. Doesn't seem worth it at all.
Although I buy older models, this sentiment is not based in reality.

Instead, you might say: that is a great price for a highly mobile computer, digital camera, and communication device.
