Toyota Highlander Hybrid: 2019 or 2020?

Post by retire57 » Mon Sep 09, 2019 7:40 pm

I'll be buying a hybrid Highlander at the beginning of next year. Any advice about which model year to purchase? Note: the price difference is not an issue.

(The 2020 model is a redesign and won't be in the showrooms until February 2020.)

Thanks!

I'd wait for the 2020. Car technology is changing so fast right now that when buying a new car last year's model is not a good idea, especially in the redesign year.

Isn’t the first year of a redesign frequently buggy?

Normally, I would say wait for the new model, but I was surprised to see the new hybrid is very under powered (in. Order to get better mpg). I think Toyota is getting ready to electrify their entire fleet, so if you can wait until early next year, see if they will make a hybrid 4Runner. Or plug-in variant of the RAV4 or Highlander.

(Obligatory, check out the Tesla model Y)

My brand loyalty would melt at a high performing hybrid Landcruiser. Anyway, rumors are they will make a plug-in variant of the RAV4 or Highlander.

Lots of info, a great source for info. I have a 2017 HL Limited and it has been fantastic.
I believe 2020 will have the updated Car Play Android Auto if that's important to you.
I stream Spotify via Bluetooth and my old ears love it. No way I am an audiophile any longer.
Either choice will be a good one.

I would expect that the 2019 model would be significantly discounted if purchased new in February 2020 (if it's even still available).

I'd definitely take price, along with features, into consideration in making the decision. I doubt that there are many folks who would say "the price difference is not an issue" when buying a car.

If money truly is no object, take the newer vehicle.
