Pay Bank of America Credit Card from Another Bank?

Post by soup_can » Thu Jul 11, 2019 12:45 pm

I'm in the process of switching all my accounts away from Bank of America. Unfortunately I have a credit card with almost ~20 years of credit history that I don't want to close just yet.

I added my other bank under the "Transfer" section of the BoA website. I can click on "Make Transfer" and I can select it as the "From". However I cannot select my credit card from the "To" drop down, only my existing BoA checking account (which I want to close). Any advice?

Another option would be to simply use bill pay from my other bank to pay my BoA credit card every month.

Usually credit cards seem to want to "pull" the payment rather than it being "pushed" from a bank account. Are you able to set the credit card to be paid from the new account (from the credit card of things)?

Your new bank likely has online bill paying, set the credit card up in that.

You have to set up the external account in BoA's billpay interface, and then you can select the external account as the "pay from" account in bill pay. It doesn't work from the transfer screen.

Alternatively, as you note, you can set it up in your external bank's billpay interface instead.

Yes, you can do this. I pay my B of A cash rewards credit card with my credit union account. No problems.

Wouldn't your credit report have your BOA credit history for some period of time even if you closed the account?

Seems I've read even closed accounts stay on your report for a period of time. How long I have no idea.

BoA has autopay like any reasonable provider of credit cards, but the process of setting it up is built fully upon anachronisms. You have to fill a form out with pen on paper like it's 1930, and fax it like it's 1989. You obtain the form using the voice call feature of the high speed internet connected computer you carry in your pocket, and then you wait a week for it to slither through the mail system. They also want something called a voided check, also from the 1930's. Then your credit card will autopay like it's 2019.

I've de-emphasized though not closed my BOA checking account. I switched our main checking account to a local back which pays 1.75% interest on checking with no 10 debit/month etc hoops to jump through and no maximum balance which receives that interest. I generally just do what you said last: pay BOA credit cards from the bill pay app of the local bank. Setting up BOA cards with them is easy, BOA is a whole category and once you select it all you have to do is type in CC number twice.

I've actually increased the number of BOA *cards* I have to take advantage of BOA/Merrill 'Platinum Honors' bonus level from shifting assets to Merrill. Then BOA also waives the minimum balance on the checking account and I keep it at only a few $100. I use it occasionally to pay one last charge on one of the BOA cards same day to hit zero balance on the card on statement closing date which boosts credit scored v. having closing balances on a bunch of cards. If I pay from local bank checking account it's usually next day so that's harder to synchronize. The BOA checking then gradually gets refilled by the cash rewards on the BOA cards going to it.

This problem has been going on specifically with BOA for at least a decade. If you have a deposit account with BOA and a credit card, it is difficult or impossible to control payments on demand from other banks through the BOA interface. This was discussed on the now departed fatwallet.com finance discussion board, I believe almost ten years ago.

When I had both BOA credit card and a checking account, I was never able to get payments from the outside bank to work, including calls and chats to BOA. I had a BOA branch in my work building, so I had to make physical check payments several times.

Once I closed my BOA deposit account, it did work after a month or two.

The poster above is correct if you want autopay. If you want on demand payments, push from your deposit account's billpay.

I have a couple of BofA credit cards, and have no problem paying them off online from the website of the internet bank I use.

You "push" payment to BOA from your new bank. Set up Bank of America as a "payee", along with all the other entities, companies, utilities that you pay on a monthly basis. Very easy.

I have an Amtrak Guest Rewards credit card (issued by Bank of America). I request payment at Bank of America's website (to withdraw (pull) from my credit union), and I have never had problems (or needed to send in a voided check). It isn't autopay, but "one-time" payments as needed.

If you are keeping your checking, you can add an external account as source for billpay. Then you can pay using your external account using BOA billpay. I do it as I pay all the bills from boa billpay but sometimes need to pull money from my credit union account

Use your new bank's bill pay. If you want automatic bill pay, you should be able to receive BofA eBills at your new bank within their bill pay software.

Word of warning if you set up autopay on the BofA side:
Bank of America had an old system where they would just pull money from your checking account each month. It's no longer offered, but continues to operate if you've already set this up. I believe this is what others are referring to with the paper form/fax.

They have a new system, which uses eBill. Basically, your credit card will notify their Bill Pay software that your statement has been cut, and it will schedule a payment from your external account. I am closing all of my accounts at BofA, including my oldest credit card, because this system is so terrible. It lost track of my eBill settings, but it still pulls the money each month (and credits it properly)... neither I nor anybody on the phone can see this eBill setup, nor can anyone cancel it. I'm not cool with BofA drawing money each month from my external account and not having the ability to cancel it ever.

I'm closing my BoA credit cards for the same reason. Their website is very hard to understand and I can never quite tell if I've set up payments correctly.

Thank you, that was the step I was missing. I previously added the account to the wrong screen. I had to add it again under "Bill Pay Accounts" (and wait 2 days for ACH to post).
