Myself, electric clippers are like 10 years old so cost is maybe twenty cents

If you drive out of your way to get your hair cut, that is part of the expense.
I just heard a barber in Venezuela on NPR who is now cutting hair for 12 cents.

I'm with you!! bought a pair of clippers in College 15 years ago. I haven't paid for a haircut since.

Hard to determine the price, but it isn’t cheap...

I am somewhat envious of those men who can look good with a shaved head.

I am sure I would look terrible with a shaved head, since my head is large (when I was a child my mother would often have trouble finding winter hats big enough) and is a bid odd shaped as well. My mother told me that as a baby I would end up sleeping in the same position causing my head to be a bit misshapen.

My full head of hair, now, covers up some of this :)

I go to Supercuts by my house and at some point around a holiday a couple years back instead of paying $20 total I paid $30 ($14 hair $16 tip) and I just continued and now it is ($16 hair $14 tip). I only go once every two months on average so about the same price as if I went every month.

My wife usually buys me a Great Clips gift card with 4 cuts for $9.99 each for Christmas and that is expected to last me the entire year. Just saw a bottom of the screen TV ad that they are having a $6.99 special July 11 - 14. $2.00 cash tip either way.

The current go to is Great Clips. $9.99 if I show my megacorp ID. + tip.
The downside is there is quite a bit of turnover there with good stylists.

I was going to an in-home salon, but I probably burnt a bridge there by not tipping. I always thought that an owner didn't need a tip, but given the declining quality I expect they were expecting one. Oh well. Another reason to hate tipping culture.

There is a $5 place near me plus I leave a $2 tip. My hair is pretty simple clippers on the side and quick snip snip in front and on top.

Get mine cut every 3 weeks, $14 plus a $3 tip. Same barber for last 35 years, one man shop (think of Floyd's Barber Shop in Mayberry). Able to catch up on all the local news / politics / etc. for the price of a haircut. He used to take walk ins but now everything is by appointment which works great for me.

I may have paid someone to cut my hair 5 times in the last 20 years. I normally just buzz off my hair with electric clippers every few weeks. I'm on my 2nd $25 clippers in that 20 year stretch.
Same here. Even the most expensive clippers pay for themselves after two uses. My wife does the actual "buzz off" except perhaps once every year or two I do it myself when she is out of town.

My labor for 15 minutes = $0.00
Clippers (amortized) = $0.07
Electricity = $0.04

Now if I wanted to account for not working at my day job for 15 minutes so I could have time to cut my hair maybe it would be cheaper to have someone else do it! :-)

My daughter, every 2 weeks, simple fade and taper.
$50 goes into her Roth = $2600 per year.
Save a screen shot every year from a local barber's internet site, which states this rate.

Tip is $3 either way
I am surprised that both of these are less than what I am charged at Hair Cuttery.

I do - $0 (already have razors, etc for shaving my face)

Prior to ~2010... cheap, chain barbers. Figure less than $20 with tip and 2-4 times per year.

I use to go to a place that would give me 2 fingers of bourbon while I waited. Except I always got hair in my drink so I gave it up. Now I use the dog clippers at home myself and my wife cleans up the back. Hey I retired at 54 so I don't have to dress for success. :beer

I've paid as much as $55 for a beard trim and haircut and as little as $4.99 + $5 tip.

I've had a set of Wahl clippers and guards for 20 years. I break them out every so often if I'm feeling cheap and bold. My hair is receding a bit so lately I do a #2 on the sides and #6 on the top.... I do it myself. Fading it in is the hardest part but not too tough.

I use to use a salon that was a 25 minute drive from work. At first I like her cut but it always took her 45 minutes and she charged me a bunch just for the small talk.

When I retired, I found a local salon....now its 12 bucks and a 5 buck tip. She's better than the other yacker and it only takes 15 minutes........ :sharebeer

I used to pay $20 plus a $4 tip at a barber shop.

Now I cut my own hair in front a mirror. My wife helps with my neck line.

Sorry. I didn't think to "use the search function". I paid $25 (including tip).

My wife use to cut my hair. But her hand tremors have made that option rather risky.
Am I the only one wondering what the base price is and what OP considered to be the generous tip? There's a big difference between a $10 cut with a $15 tip and a $20 cut with a $5 tip.

I personally pay $15 with a $5 tip as it's an HCOL and it's a great deal as I'm in and out in 10 minutes with a great cut.

Also, I guess this is BH's tipping thread of the month, lol...

Me. $0. Wahl clippers with a #3 guard for my head, #2 for eyebrows and #1 for elsewhere.

I'll call my wife in so she can trim my neck line just right.

Simple 10 minute job and I can do it daily or go a few weeks.

I go to this young barber. He is only 72....well, he's younger than me. He charges $7 now. It was $6 a couple of years ago. I usually give him $10, unless I don't have that much in my wallet. (no credit card accepted.) His son and grandson used to work for him, but about 5 years ago they split from him and opened their own shop where they charge $12.

Sitting in the barber's chair, a young barber (by almost 35 years) is cutting my hair. I enjoy the conversation and there is much to learn by listening and engaging in thoughtful conversation . More importantly I realize the difficulty each of us grapples with. I gave what I though was a generous tip. Who cuts you hair, do you provide a generous tip? Are Bogleheads totally frugal, penny-pinching?
I always cut my own hair. Zero cost. I have not paid for a hair cut in decades.

I deeply regret spending anything on a haircut in the distant past. It was a waste of money. Best of luck.

Clippers at home for 25 years. It made for an easy transition when I started going bald 10 years ago. Now I just buzz the sides and it takes a few minutes.

Every three weeks I go to Super Cuts and have my girl cut my hair. I'm female and have short hair so a precision cut is important for me. I tip her $10 and I think she charges about $17. If I tried to cut my own hair it would be a disaster.

went to a local barber for a long time. I think it was about $12. Then he split from his wife (the other chair in the shop) soI went with him.Times got tough for him. No traffic. I'd walk in and he would not have change for a $20. So $8 tip. He did this a few times and said F it.Walked into a supply shop and got some Wahl clippers and Mrs Scrapr did mine for 13 years.

In the last few years I've had some special occasions so i started going in to a local barber and getting a cut & a shave. The hot towel shave was so relaxing. Mrs Scrapr passed a couple months ago so i will do a few on my own but use the shop more & more. The head guy did my first couple shaves but it is hard to get on his schedule. So I moved down the chairs to the FNG. I've had to coach him up a bit but he's coming around. He did a great job on my last one for Mrs Scrapr's Celebration of Life. $40 tip! The hot towel shave is just one of my little "treats"that just make my week

Also got a 20 dollar Wahl's electric haircutter with 10 plastic cutter guides. Only need to use 2 guides for my haircut.
My friend cuts my hair. Takes about 7 minutes at most to cut my hair. I have it done in the bathroom so it is easier to clean the cut hair and I wear an apron around my shoulders so the cut hair does not go down my neck. Just sweep up the floor and all the cut hair is gone.
5 haircuts a year at 20 bucks a piece, and add a 5 bucks tip each haircut and I save 125 bucks a year. As I live in New York City, 20 bucks is about as cheap as you can get for a haircut.
Most important, and to save personal frustration, I don't have to wait in line for a haircut and it can be done anytime I want.
Wish I had done this, forty years ago.

I guess this will be an atypical response ... I pay $60 per cut roughly once a month + $10-$15 tip.

I love my hair stylist who is the owner of a successful men’s salon. Great haircut with attention to detail plus extras like arm/hand massage, steamed towel during shampoo, etc. and a lively conversationalist.

Kind of a haircut + relaxation thing. I recently went to a Great Clips equivalent since she is on maternity leave and man was the difference night and day. It works nicely in my budget so who cares, right?
Same boat... $60 for my haircut. Don’t tip currently.

Great Clips, I usually wait until they have a special going on. I think the cut is $7.99 to $9.99 depending on special, excluding tip.

I get my hair cut at a place near my office operated by an older Korean lady who speaks almost no English. (I don't speak any Korean.)

$21 + $9 tip.

Other than for the occasional bridge toll, this is the only place I actually pay in cash. I periodically obtain $10 bills from the bank in order to be able to pay for my haircut without the need to break the $20 bills I get from ATMs.

I have naturally curly hair and so do both of my daughters. I've been cutting our hair since 2009. No idea how much I've saved in ten years. But at least $30 to 50 for myself every six months...
