I have been enjoying "According To Jim" on the Laff channel every week night. Over the air and free.

Good review. I had stopped watching; maybe I’ll give it another shot.
I watched a few episodes of Russian Doll, big meh for me. Loved Groundhog day, but this is nothing like that other than the very basic premise.

I have been following "The Zoo" about the Bronx Zoo and "Secrets of the Zoo" about the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds adjunct where herds of animals roam thousands of acres.

I recorded episodes of "Too Cute" kittens and watch one when I want to de-stress.

Just finished "Chernobyl" which is very well done. I realize it is probably a good time to re watch White Nights (1985) which takes place in the same time period as this series, actually a year before. A good exercise in "compare and contrast" what the Soviet Union represented in its final years.
Great dancing and interesting big name sound track too. Wouldn't be made today, I suspect.

"Absentia" season 2 on Amazon. It was decent, just like the first season. Obvious set-up for a 3rd season, which I'd probably watch.

Bosch: Excellent LA noire. Well written/acted and great characters. And as others have said, the books by Connelly are page turners

Killing Eve: Gripping and crazy

Endeavor: Prequel to the classic Brit mystery Morse. 1-2 earlier episodes were less engaging but overall great stuff

Unforgotten: Contemporary Brit mystery on Prime.

Eagerly waiting for new episodes of Peaky Blinders, Stranger Things and Luther!

based on a NYT recommend I started watching Younger. It's just starting season 6 on TVLand and several streaming services. Stars Sutton Foster and Hillary Duff and others.

The plot "A financially strapped 40-something divorcée tries to re-enter the working world, but discovers that to get a job at a prestigious New York publishing house she’ll have to pretend that she’s still in her 20s."

Didn't sound appealing to me and it requires some suspension of belief, but the one liners and situations are funny. I watched and enjoyed two season 6 episodes and will go back and start at season 1.

The part where Baryshnikov does eleven pirouettes is amazing. And in street shoes yet.

I agree with others who liked the Catch 22 mini-series on Hulu.

Currently streaming Hinterland and Shetland--similar crime dramas featuring the beautiful desolation that is part and parcel to norther areas of the United Kingdom. For camera work I think Hinterland gets the nod. Both, however, offer great acting/directing and compelling story lines. As a total opposite, for a change of pace, Good Karma Hospital offers the beautiful tropical colors of India (actually filmed in Sri Lanka) and some comic relief, in a mature way with serious plot lines. Amanda Redman is great as the de facto person in charge of the hospital, but all the characters are great. A real alternative compared to some of the crap Hollywood is turning out these days.

We liked Hinterland, and loved Shetland. Both were available on Netflix.

If you don’t have Acorn (or Britbox), they have free week intro offers. I have better streaming, and payment convenience, from ordering them via Amazon. You can also do the trials via Amazon.

Line up a few series to binge, get the week trial, and binge away. I personally find Acorn and Britbox worth the fees. PBS Masterpiece is probably next.

Those are the three I have so far. Nothing else has lured me in yet but I am still relatively new to streaming (ex DIrecTV subscriber) so maybe I will run across some new things. So: Amazon with the above three "channels" and Netflix.

I hated the new DirecTV system that I got suckered into as a free upgrade. It seemed like a major regression to me instead of an upgrade! Leave it to DirecTV to make TV too complicated, abstruse, sluggish and glitch-prone to be worth the trouble. As soon I got decent internet service (fiber) it was no contest. Streaming won out.

Eventually I cancelled DirecTV. A few months back I called to cancel because I realized I never used it, but they gave me a discount and a free something-or-other (HBO?) but I still never bothered with it so, again, I called to cancel and found out the early cancelation fee was less than two month's subscription so that was a pleasant surprise. Goodbye DirecTV. My "entertainment center" suddenly became less cluttered. Also one fewer remote on the coffee table and, if I pick up a new streaming service, I won't need an additional remote.

P.S. I found Roku (the Ultra version) to be the best thing since sliced bread in the streaming universe. At least in my limited exposure to it.

Watched season 2 of Abstentia, Amazon, generally good and fairly gripping, apart from the occasional implausibilities (her routinely beating up ex military combat specialists at more than twice her size) and the season ending surprise (wait...what?) moments.

Watching season 2 of Dark. I really like the show. German, (I think) subject matter is time travel. The only negative is the English voice overs are a bit annoying but you get used to it.

If it were just me I'd consider dumping directv. We've been 20 year subscribers but I pretty much never watch it except during college football season. DW still DVRs and watches some shows. If it's not on Roku I don't watch because with Roku app I can listen through headphones. With ATT bundling discounts we pay next to nothing for direct TV, including HBO showtime and sometimes cinemax, but we pay up the wazoo for ATT mobile phone service.

Yellowstone, Animal Kingdom, Queen of the South, Big Little Lies, and City on a Hill are series that I enjoy during the summer. I have an expensive cable package that includes several channels; consequently, these entertaining programs probably aren’t available to most frugal Bogleheads.

The first 7 seasons were indeed very good. The 8th (and last) season should be skipped.
You must be talking about Game of Thrones.... :P
The final season of GOT was infinitely better than the final season of Dexter. I didn't care much for the GOT finale, but I thought the rest of the final season was good (not great like the rest of the show).

For a very good show, Dexter had probably the worst series final season and series finale ever.
I couldn't imagine anything being worse than GOT season 8; well Jessica Jones season 2 and 3 - actually I couldn't get through either one - and the movie "Crazy Rich Asians". Really, I think GOT finale ruined TV for me, I haven't been able to get into anything since, including some highly rated shows such as Chernobyl (one episode and I just wasn't feeling it) and Boardwalk Empire. We've been watching almost exclusively random stand-up comedy specials the last few months. But thanks for the tip, I'm gonna skip Dexter.

As others have said, Dexter was very good until the last season. I would recommend it. We can agree to disagree on GOT Season 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. I enjoyed most of Season 8 (it certainly was not as good as the previous seasons), and was entertained by Crazy Rich Asians. Really liked Chernobyl and am now watching The Good Fight on CBS All-Access (free trial) and am enjoying that. I just like being entertained and really don't analyze TV shows (or movies) too deeply.

It is going to be very competitive and I think we will all survive the costs.Yea I remember when all TV was free way back when.I also remember having like 3 channels,no dvr, almost zero content and a tiny screen in black and white.Compare that to what we have today and it is not unreasonable to have to pay a few bucks. If you are a sports person look at what you have today. It is unbelievable. The cost of TV is by far the best bang for your entertainment buck.

On HBO:
Chernobyl is fantastic. It's not a mushy human drama--it lets the events provide the drama and does so expertly. The final episode walks you through the events and the science of how a reactor could blow up, achieving the seemingly impossible feat of making it entertaining and informative.

I'm watching Deadwood now. A western that came out in the mid-2000s. There is a new movie that follows up the series, which I'm looking forward to as soon as I finish. The series is fantastic.

And Barry is some of the best TV I have ever seen.

Just finished up Stranger Things 3 and very much enjoyed it. It was better than season two, overall. Of course, they left it open for a season four. However, the way they wrapped up season three was perfect.

My wife started reading the Outlander books, and since they've added the first two seasons to Netflix, we've been watching the show. Pretty enjoyable historical romance action piece with time travel twist and some steamy sex thrown in. First season was good, though the last two episodes were painful to watch. Second season changes locale from Scotland to France. I'm not sure if it drags some, or just binge watching "hangover", and we need to take a break.

I'm working my way through the first season of Stranger Things on Netflix. It's entertaining with a lot of suggestions of other shows and movies of the era being portrayed. I'll keep going.

At the same time I'm watching Bodyguard on Amazon. Richard Madden (Robb Stark from GOT) is a war veteran turned government bodyguard in contemporary Britain. I'm three episodes in and enjoying it, albeit with close-captioning for the Brit accents.

Based upon the 11 Emmy Nominations received by Fleabag, a Brit comedy starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (an exec-producer of Killing Eve), I gave it a try last night on Amazon starting with S1 E1. It must be a generational thing. I quickly thought it wasn't for me but pushed on hoping it would improve. I left the show, sometime in the first half hour, after a bed scene involving Fleabag, and a young Barack Obama video ...

"Southland" on hulu. Never watched the series when it was on NBC / TNT some years back.

A good police procedural spanning five seasons. Starts out a bit over the top in terms of some of the acting and dialog but dials it in over time.

Watching the following:

Big Little Lies- good but no where as good as 1st season. Not a big Meryl Streep fan.

Stranger Things- excellent but miss the Dynamics of grade school kids.

OA- watched first 2 episodes and I am hooked. Best of the 3 shows.
