Myself, electric clippers are like 10 years old so cost is maybe twenty cents

If you drive out of your way to get your hair cut, that is part of the expense.
Never look back unless you are planning to go that way

$30 + $5 tip = $35 total. I go once every 5-6 weeks.

As others have said, I've gone the Sport Clips (and similar) route. It's like playing Russian roulette. You might get a decent (or even good) cut one time, but it's impossible to regularly go to the same person and get a similar cut every time. I appreciate going to the same person who's really good at what she does. She works hard and has a young family and deserves to earn a living wage, so I think her prices are fair.

A local stylist. She charges $35. I generally give her a c-note cause I had to work stupid hard when I was young. I also give my house keeper a two month bonus at the end of the year. Working hard is hard. When you have done alright, you share when you can.
Classy.

Reminds me of a compliment someone paid Joan Rivers after she died:
"She would never let you pick up a dinner check, and she always tipped like someone who has worked for tips."

My barber, Vincent, has been cutting my hair for the past 12 years...best haircuts I've gotten in my life. Price of the cut is $18 and I tip between $3 and $7 (depends on what I have in my wallet at the time). I give a $100 around Christmas or New Years every year as well.

Me, 2 cents per cut. Amortizing the cost of the clipper out over 1,000 haircuts. 24 haircuts per year for 40 years. Might be optimistic.

Wahl clipper (corded/plug in style) ($20). #2 guard, #1 guard, left and right ear taper guards. ~4 minutes.

It varies depending on wait time. Sometimes I do Great Clips for $15 + $4-$5 tip. Other times I do Sport Clips for $24+$5 tip.

I've been shaving my head for 20 years. I would figure about $40 per year for the cost of clippers.

I cut my own hair. Bought my Wahl clippers on July 30, 2014 for $24.99. I cut my hair roughly every fortnight. So I guess I'm down to about 20 cents per cut if my math is right

It's now $20 ($16, keep the change) at the old style barber shop I go to. As the our small NY area city has gentrified it's gone from mainly old style shops and a few more expensive upscale places to the other way around and that's pulled the old style places prices' up noticeably faster than inflation, along with rents going up a lot. $20 is quite cheap compared to local non-DIY alternatives though not that cheap nationally I don't suppose.

Every month or so a trim that includes the bushy eye brows from the local hair cutting operation down the road.... They're nice folks.... The posted charge is $12 for the Sr. hair cut but I usually give em $25....

Same young lady has been cutting my hair for over 20 years. $12 + $5 tip, or sometimes $12 + $8 tip.

I followed her from one shop to another, and finally to her present shop where she owns the place. She is living the American dream of owning her own business. She is very busy, hard to get an appointment with her. I have learned to get an appointment for my next haircut when I'm getting one.

She also has a mini-farm of a few acres, and often offers her customers fresh eggs, as her family can't eat all the eggs her flock lay. She has a stocked refrigerator with beer and wine, sodas, and a Keurig coffee maker for the customers waiting.

I am old enough that (except for family member cutting your hair) men and boys could only get a haircut at a Barber shop. In NY State, at the time, licensing for barbers (men) and hair dresser/stylists (women) were completely different licensing. It would have been illegal, for example, for my mother's licensed hairdresser to have cut my hair. Neither were there any females that were barbers. [In fact, in my hometown, all the barbers were Italian.]

There still seem to be a few old style barber shops - but I think most folks (men and women) tend to use the places (like Hair Cuttery) that has both male and female customers and staff.

Lots of changes (mostly for the better) for things like barber shops discriminating against those with certain types of hair. :happy

I do not have one stylist that I go to all the time. I just get the next available.

I have noticed, however, that the young women at a Hair Cuttery a few miles further away all tend to do a better job.

I have long, luxurious hair. I go to a local "hair school" and they cut it under the supervision and instruction of a licensed stylist. I typically get a straight cut or slightly a-line, so it's not too complicated of a cut (but not something I, or my wife, could do for me properly). Costs $8 for washing, cutting, blow-drying, and flat-ironing. I don't leave a tip. Them washing your hair for you with Tea Tree shampoo is amazing and I'd go there every day for that if I could afford it. I usually end up cutting my hair every six or eight months.

I feel bad for all the people saying they just buzz cut their hair.

I totally agree with you when people are asking for financial information. I don't think the amount I tip my barber is a piece of data that I'm worried about becoming public!

Local barber shop, $12 + $3 tip, including shaving my neck/around the ears with a straight razor.

Were money tight I could get by with using one of those Wahl kits, but I only get my hair cut every 2-3 months anyway.

Great Clips, every November they have a gift card available that you can load as many 9.95 haircuts as you want. I buy a 10 haircut card for me and each of my sons as a Xmas gift. Good any day any time. Boys always look good when they come home to visit.

So ... 95% of people here go to a $12 barber across the street.
That said, it's also an older (Boomer, Gen X) male crowd here, that works in more conservative, traditional fields I take it.

I'm a man who works in tech and have long hair (grew it out). I'm not going for the grad school look, just more rocker - but I make an effort on neatness and appearance -- I typically wear Italian double monk strap loafers and various henley/ collared shirts. I get complimented on my hair and appearance frequently.

Even though I should cut it more frequently, I typically get it cut once every 1 - 1.5 years. I go to one of them fancy urban salons with the true creative professionals and usually spend $50-$60 for a men's cut. Yeah there is something 'effeminate' about the salon in some regards, but ... I really don't care. Given my frequency, I actually probably spend less on annual haircuts than most here.

Edit: Back when I had shorter hair, I probably went to a $25-$40 salon about once every two months. I think the work is just more professional and even unless you are doing a high + tight. The hot women usually working there is simply a side perk. I agree it's a meditative experience, kind of like a massage, in my view. To each their own.

My only interest in a barber at this point is if a shop was really pro at a full-service straight-razor shave. That would be cool.

There is a local salon chain near me that focuses on female clientele with some light spa services but they also do men's haircuts. I go there because it's convenient and there's a stylist that understands how I like my hair cut.

I'm getting pretty thin on top, but the sides continue to grow as they always have. So, I keep it short to avoid what I think is a ridiculous look of balding on top and bushy on the side.

I pay $26 plus I tip $7.

I go once a month.

I generally don't talk and she knows I don't do chitchat.

Rather, I close my eyes and enjoy what I find to be a half hour of enjoyable relaxation. I find the hair cutting experience to be almost meditative. Worth the cost to me.

I shave my head using the old traditional wet shaving stuff - a metal safety razor that takes a razor blade, and a bowl of warm shave soap. Usually twice a week or so. High quality Japanese blade (Feather) and a bit of soap is probably pennies.

Supercuts for $14. The stylists may differ slightly but have all had the same training, so one is about the same as the others. Very consistent and serve both men and women. Tip of $2 usually.

Re: Who cuts your hair? And for how much?

I go to a local hair salon. A cut and color costs me $55 and last time I gave my stylist $90. She is very sweet and a hard worker and I like passing along some of my good fortune. Plus when I find someone who can successfully give my hair that unemployed surfer dude look it is worth every penny :happy

I go to a 2 man old fashioned barber shop. I pay $12 for a haircut, no tip. When I was growing up in a small town in the south, I don't remember people tipping barbers. If they did, I didn't know it.

I may have paid someone to cut my hair 5 times in the last 20 years. I normally just buzz off my hair with electric clippers every few weeks. I'm on my 2nd $25 clippers in that 20 year stretch.
