what was your worst major purchase? mine is a 2019 mazda3

Post by lomarica01 » Fri Jun 21, 2019 11:28 am

I normally do not like to dwell on the past but I am curious what are some of the worst major purchases you have made. Mine is our 2019 mazda 3 hatchback. it was delivered with a huge gap in the trim and after 600 miles there is a huge gap in the seat trim. I just can't believe the poor initial quality of this car, very disappointing. Working with dealer now but will most likely just have to get it fixed under the warranty.

I know the term worst is a bit vague but I think you all get the idea
thanks for any comments

Oddly enough, I think my 2018 Mazda 3 was one of the better car purchases I ever made.

Undergrad and dental school for ex-wife. $300k down the tubes for me.

Pretty sure cash-flowing current wife's undergrad (2 more semesters) is going to be a better long-term purchase/investment.

+1. Got a killer deal thanks to the new 2019 design too. Never would've bought a brand new car otherwise (it was cheaper than any used ones on the market with low miles). Was a 1-1 swap more or less with my 60K mile European sports car. True Boglehead car owner now.

New ones look nice. I am sorry to hear you've had a bad experience OP.

Audi S4. Spent literally 50% of the time I owned it in the shop. Traded it for a Wrangler which was a dream reliability wise comparatively.

Audi A4. Much time in the shop. Sold it the second the warranty expired. Keeping it wasn’t going to lead to anything good happening.

Best purchase was a 2005 Maxda3. Still driving it.

1) The money spent updating a house and a condo we stayed in for less than 5-years and never recouped. Thanks HGTV.
2) 1998 BMW M3 with a ton of miles. It was fun... but it was also expensive to keep on the road.

A couple of cars:
Saab that I bought when I had new dr fever out of med school. Blew a head gasket just out of warranty, took it to get fixed and died again on way home from repair shop. Drove it from shop to dealership.
Monte Carlo bought for my wife. It had some kind of problem where it would lose power when accelerating and could never be diagnosed or fixed despite multiple trips to dealer. Traded in as soon as the note was paid off.

My 2007 Mazda 3, bought new, has served me well too. Still going strong with 130,000 miles and I haven't had to stick much into it yet. I'll probably buy another one when this one craps out.

Hard to choose:

My first reaction was an Audi 100 LS bought new in 1974. What a lemon! And no relief from Volkswagen of America.

On second thought, it might have been my current house due to the higher cost. It is an older home that had a section added right before we bought it. We have come to find out that the people who did the addition had little knowledge of any aspect of construction. We love everything else about the house and property, but having to repair anything near the newest addition has been a head-scratching PITA. We have repaired many of the shortcomings and have come to recognize many of the other quirks and figured out workarounds. But it has been years of occasional frustration and aggravation that could easily have been avoided.

Since we are very happy with the home now (and wouldn't consider moving) but I hope that Audi was crushed to the size of a baseball in some junkyard, I guess my final answer is indeed the Audi.

Without a doubt, a 1998 Ford Windstar.

Old technology (only one side door), crappy unreliable transmission and very very poor reliability overall. Driver seat was uncomfortable to boot.

The $4,000 price advantage vs. buying a Honda Odyssey easily cost me $10,000 or more in the long run.

Worse, it was unreliable and in the end unsafe. None of the electric windows worked properly at 100K miles (and only 6 years old) and I wasn’t going to spend a $ to fix them.

When my son got pulled over and opened the door to talk to the cop (remember, the windows didn’t work), the cop pulled his gun. I sold the car as fast as humanly possible after that.

Don’t buy junk even if it is on sale.

Stable Value fund in my prior 401k. It lost almost 5% at liquidation. Even though it claimed otherwise.

Emerging Market funds. What a joke these have been. Finally, I sold everything international in 2018 and went all-in on the US, the only real investable country lately.

Tossup between a new Kia Rio, I think 2008 but possibly 2009 model, and a Kia minivan purchased used with low miles. Neither was reliable and we ended up getting rid of the van after only a few years and less than 50k miles. The Rio got totaled in a brutal accident that I luckily walked away from, but I'm pretty sure had that not happened we would have dumped it before hitting 50k miles.

Back to an all Honda family once again since then.

At the urging of my SO at the time, we bought a yet to be built condo to flip in a new conversion downtown. I would have never done it on my own (especially without more due diligence). I wound up selling it (acting as selling agent) and we didn't really lose money after all was said and done (except my time), but the time, effort, hassle and having it hang over your head made it a loser in my book. This was bought (put down deposit) in 2000 and sold in 2003.

Motorcycles and lots of them. I sometimes owned two or three at a time and lost interest and sold them. Then I’d get the itch in the spring and buy a new one and sell again. This went on for years until I sold the last one in 2012 and would never buy another. Then I bought new cars and would get bored and sell them and get something different every few years or sooner 🙄. Wish I had half of the money I lost back.

1. Internet stocks in the late 90s.
2. Old Mercedes bought at “killer price.” Oh, it’s about the repairs! Lesson learned. Kids, don’t let this happen to you. Stay in school! That was over 30 years ago. Have owned serial Hondas since—2 of them going on 28 years now and the second/current one probably has another 10 years left on it. I hope.

To my credit, I never bought a boat (but I did own a kayak at one time).

Fancy Vespa so DW and I could ride together, skip ferry lines, and not drive a car. Cost like $8000. Finally donated it to charity w/ less than a 1000 miles on it, for $3300. Never used it like we thought, in part because we got a dog shortly thereafter and wanted to bring dog with us most places.
We should have bought an electric cargo bike, will be doing that shortly.

Frustrating to think that buying a new car does not mean problem free. But these are just cosmetic and hopefully easily fixed. It has been my experience that it is very difficult to get a new car that does not need a little TLC. My DH thought a new car should be “perfect”. After examining several hundred cars at dozens of dealerships and most makes, we finally bought one. Haha, he missed a loose panel and a wheel well issue. He has now accepted that his decision making process needs to be about how easy the fix and the likelihood of future problems. Hopefully, our next purchase will be less time consuming. We have owned 6 new cars, 2 American, 2 German, and 2 Japanese, not a single one made it through the warranty period without needing some repair, from just a minor trim repair to being stranded on the side of the road.

Hope your car is repaired and you can move forward and enjoy your new car.

No. I put the ex through school, often working 2 jobs while in school myself. She didn't earn a penny during our 5yrs of marriage. Wife, despite not having a degree, earns 6-figures in tech sales. She could very easily cash-flow it herself.

I went to a dealer's lot and looked at them. As has been noted in reviews, the thick rear roof pillars significantly reduces visibility.

I spent too much on stupid remodeling of an old house. The remodel didn't turn out that great. We ultimately sold it and because of the upgrades, it did sell, but surely not for the money we wasted on it!

My 1st house that I overpaid for in 2005, right before it all came tumbling down. Value went down 30%, and I was stuck with it as I moved places and took huge monthly losses.

Have only skimmed this post, but I did see a lot of references to car purchases (many negative). I don't own a car, and this thread actually makes me happy that I don't. But, I digress ...

I figure many car owners are probably already familiar with "Lemon Laws", but I thought it could be helpful to provide a link to the Center for Auto Safety (CAS).

https://www.autosafety.org/lemon-law-library/

I have a sibling who recently bought a new car, only to experience ongoing problems. At my suggestion, they contacted CAS and, fast forward, got a FULL refund from the car manufacturer. It's worth mentioning that there are time limits and whatnot for reporting things. I think it's one year, but I'm not sure. Also, my sibling did not have to pay anything in the way of lawyer fees or similar. If I recall correctly, the manufacturer foots the bill. Anyway, if anyone thinks they recently got a lemon of a car I would encourage them to look into their state's Lemon Law (using CAS or other means). The law varies by state, but it certainly led to a favorable outcome in my family.

Full disclosure: Many, many years ago, as a teenager, I volunteered for CAS. I also keep meaning to donate and become a member myself (sibling joined, but I doubt it was a requirement for assistance).

We bought it new around 10 years ago. It had the Dual Clutch transmission. We were patient 0 for that transmission, and Audi corporate acknowledged that it wasn’t working but said that they hadn’t come up with a fix. After some back and forth, I told them to keep the car until they had a fix, and I would keep the loaner. They finally fixed it, and we drove it a couple hundred feet to the Range Rover dealer and used it as a trade in. I didn’t have the gall to sell it to someone I’d have to look in the eye.

Between that and the diesel emissions fraud, I’ll never own an Audi again.

As someone considering the 2019 Mazda3, which has gotten great reviews so far, this caught my eye. But it sounds mostly cosmetic, relatively minor and the dealership is taking care of it. Annoying but not terrible. If that's your worst major purchase in life, then you've done pretty good.

Our first house in September 2007 with 5% down in a city 6 hours from family when we were young in our careers... sold 3.5 years later for a $40k loss to move close to family to start having kiddos.

But we had paid off the second mortgage and didn’t have to bring cash to closing, so that’s something, right?

Followed closely by investing the remaining college money my parents gave me (I graduated early so they gifted it to me) in individual stocks after doing “extensive” research with my fancy Morningstar account. I broke even over a few years but got to learn lessons around buying REITs... held one essentially to bankruptcy.

Toyota Prius my spouse bought after graduate school. It has the style of a suppository and the driving dynamics of a coffin filled with snot.

We just advertised it for sale. Last weekend we leased a new BMW 750i, so it's time to move on and try to forget this ever happened.

No. I put the ex through school, often working 2 jobs while in school myself. She didn't earn a penny during our 5yrs of marriage.
Wow. Does she at least give you free dental care?

For me it was a Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Great power and ergonomics, but between electrical and mechanical issues it was in the shop over half the time I owned it. No more Volkswagens for me.

I built a very nice 4:3 TV cabinet out of cherry right before LCDs became affordable and mainstream. More a waste of time than of money, but cherry isn't cheap.
