Is there a mp3DirectCut but for .m4a audio files?

Post by get_g0ing » Tue May 14, 2019 9:55 pm

Hi,

mp3DirectCut is a free Windows program that can cut and crop MP3 files. Meaning you can extract part of an mp3 files and create a new file with just that part.
Does anyone know of a similar free program but for .m4a audio files on Windows?

I'm looking to take a M4A audio file and extract part of it into a separate file, say minutes 8-to-13 out of a 30 minute audio.

Any suggestions please? Thank you.

QuickTime Player will do that, and it comes included as part of macOS. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201066#edit

It appears that Audacity can do that. You can download a Windows executable from

Audacity is a good GUI method. If you want to script something or you want to see if it can be done without decoding and encoding (with associated loss in audio quality) then use ffmpeg.

I haven't used it in awhile but if I recall, Wavepad from NCH will do it.

I will try Audacity. Looks like I need to add another plugin called ffmpeg.

Not exactly what you asked, but I used LameXP to batch convert a bunch of m4a files to mp3. It worked well.

I suppose you could do that then use DirectCut.

Hi,

Yes, a backup solution that I've tried is to first convert .m4a to .mp3, and the use mp3DirectCut to crop. Now I am looking to see if I can directly cut/crop .m4a files.

I've never done it myself, but supposedly you can use VLC to extract and save segments of video files. I do know that VLC can decode and play .m4a audio files, so the process might work in the same way.

VLC is available for Windows as well as other platforms.

Both Audacity and WavePad were able to cut .m4a files. In fact what I found useful was that I could cut multiple segments (from different location in the audio) and create a new file with just those parts. I don't think mp3DirectCut can do this.

Thanks for your help :happy

Btw, any comments on Audacity vs WavePad? Are they just alternatives to each other, so do they have different use cases?

Thank you.
