Ira transfer to Vanguard

Post by prettybogle » Mon May 13, 2019 10:04 pm

Hello, I have a traditional IRA at td Ameritrade that I would like to transfer over to vanguard. What is the process for this ? I called vanguard customer service and didn’t get much help. Will vanguard pay any fees for doing this ?

I don't know that they will pay any fees. That being said, I'm surprised that they were not helpful. Usually, they are pretty good about explaining how to do a transfer.

Call them back. I find about 1 out of 3 phone reps is totally useless. You'll likely talk to a more helpful person on your next call. If not, there's always Fidelity.

My wife transferred her IRA from Ameritrade to Vanguard about 2 years ago. She never spoke to anyone at Vanguard. She opened up the IRA online and initiated the transfer during the application process. It took about 7 days for the transfer to be completed and that was with a weekend and holiday included.

We transferred our accounts to Charles Schwab. They paid the $95 per account closing fees & gave us 100 free trades.

Vanguard will not reimburse fees. Checking the ACATS list it looks like a full transfer from TDA is $75, and a partial is $0. I also know from experience that when you do a total transfer, TDA closes the account and blocks online access. If you need anything in the way of documents you have ask them to reopen it.

How much is in it? As I recall, if you get Apex status on an account (100k+) then there are no transfer fees.

I recently closed an account with Portfolio Solutions.TD Ameritrade was the account custodian. Vanguard initiated the transfer. My monies just showed up in my Vanguard account today; 15 days after I started the process. The reason? 6 days after the supposed start of the transfer I get a call from a Vanguard rep. saying something funny is going on. We do a conference call with TD and find out that account had been moved from the institutional side to retail and the account number changed. All this without informing me. This added another 9 days.
I am definitely not impressed with TD Ameritrade. Getting a hold of a Vanguard rep. is not an easy task. Frankly, I'm not impressed with either organization. It's like trying to work with Social Security or Medicare.

Call again. The rollover process is some and they can do almost of the work for you.

+1. Ask to be connected to an account transfer specialist.

+2...you need to explicitly ask for the transfer specialists and they are tenacious

I've had the same experience in transitioning an IRA from Fidelity to Vanguard. I didn't speak to Vanguard at inception of the transfer; I only needed to speak to them (and Fidelity) during the process due to some incompetent actions taken by Fidelity. Had Fidelity not screwed up, the transfer would have been smooth.

The whole process took just over a week from start to end.

Why on explaining what you want would you have to ask to be transferred to the person who does that? Unbelievable!

In my case, I did my account transfers online as it was straightforward and no need to call Vanguard.

But the dedicated Vanguard account transfer specialist was very helpful with the transfer of my parents’ Taxable/IRA accounts (I am POA) as it needed some babysitting due to complexity. Wells Fargo advisor-managed accounts with over 50 high ER funds (for mid-6 figure total $). Most funds would not transfer, ACAT/account closing fees, issues with cost basis info transfer, etc.

The only bright spots (if you can call them that) in the 2-week transfer process were (1) taxable account had been churned so much that there was very little taxable gain when we sold everything, and (2) old advisor did not put up any roadblocks or regale parents with DIY horror stories after I visited him and laid out my expectations for a quick transfer.

A good advisor and person will recognize that customers come and go and not create any waves for the customer. Unfortunately, that does not always happen.

Glad you had a good experience.
