I was paying $130 every 3 months or so for highlights, cut, and blow dry before tip. Granted, for CT, this is a great price, but after doing this for so many years, I just couldn’t justify it. I hated sitting in that salon for hours and I finally cut the cord. I color my own hair using a $7 box of color and I go to Great Clips for the cut paying no more than $20 including tip. I even received compliments on my new color, so it’s been a win-win.

I have to say, haircut cost isn't bad compared to nail care cost. I know many women, who aren't poor but who aren't rich either, would spend $30 every two weeks to do their nails.

Are you sitting down? For a year now I've been getting Aveda semi-permanent color, cut and blowdry, 3-month supply of shampoo and conditioner, + $40 tip = about $230 every 10-12 weeks. Takes about 2 hours. Gotta spend all that retirement income somehow.

Every November (around Veterans Day) I buy a pre-paid card from Great Clips. Last year I bough 8 haircuts for $10.99 each, all on the card. After each haircut, the receipt shows how much value is left on the card. If Great Clips publishes a coupon with a lower rate, I use it instead of using up one of the haircuts on the card. I’ve had the same stylist for 15 years and I always tip $2.00. In recent years, it has worked better to check in online to reserve not only my place in line, but also the spot with my preferred stylist. I do call ahead to find out when my preferred stylist will be working.

I only color lowlights around the bangs, temples and ears where my natural brunette has already turned 100% gray. I don’t color the top crown area, so the gray that shows up there sort of mimics highlights. I only use a couple teaspoons of colorant and even less developer. I use Loreal Excellence cream bought in a tube from Sally’s. Since I use so little, it lasts for many many months.

Seattle, $80 including tip, for the best haircuts I’ve gotten in my life at a fancy salon downtown. Worth every penny.
Any chance you'd be willing to share the name of this stylist and salon?

While I'm perfectly happy with home-brewed coffee and free office coffee, My husband has a $4 cappuccino every day! Sometimes he buys a pastry. So we have a budget of $150 for coffee shops every month. That seems high to me, but that's important to him... so what can I say...
Exactly. A marriage is a negotiation.

HCOL area - $140 cut and color every 5 weeks + tip. Really hate those dark roots to show!

Bacon - was not referring to monetary cost here. Rather, your ready admission of ignorance of what it "includes".
That is what struck me as uncharacteristic-BH mode.

Right now, about $80+tip for cut, shampoo, and style. This is with a specially-trained stylist for curly hair. On the other hand, paying more for a special stylist saves me a half hour every morning trying to blow dry my hair straight, which over a year of workdays is 120 hours or 5 full days of styling my hair!

Edit: I just saw OP was asking about prices in a mid-price area; my VHCOL costs are likely irrelevant to their situation.

I would gladly pay the extra $7 for a stylist that I am happy with. I used to pay about $200 for a shampoo, highlights, and cut and it was totally worth it. I got a lot of compliments on my hair back then. I have been searching for over 5 years for a new stylist since the old one moved away and I'm still not happy. The average I pay is $45 for a shampoo and cut around here, plus tip. I have to ask them to blow dry or sometimes do it myself. I'm in a HCOL area outside of Chicago.

My wife spends anywhere between $10 - $18 with tip, depending on coupon availability. She has low-maintenance long hair so this is an annual event.

This is at Great Clips. No idea what a fancier salon costs here in the Midwest- neither of us have been to one in ages. :)

Well, er, Thanks, Paine Webber !

Since it seems - thread has run off the rail, i.e, multiple males (un-invited) contributing their, um, less than data-driven input :P ; others (women) adding coloring costs, etc. etc. Might as well veer off.

What is this with tipping now at the salon ? Is 18% -20% no longer acceptable/norm?

In this thread - it's all over the map - way more than what I thought customary :?

30% tip per Arabesque, same with JediMisty, then more than 50% from IowaFarmWife

Are some of you tipping way more than usual because you think your provider is charging too little?

I’m a guy, and when I get a ‘nice’ haircut I pay $60 + tip, when I get a cheap one it’s 20 + tip. I usually alternate, as there is 100% a difference between the two.

Wow, wouldn't the hairstylists be very rich then? Some people here pay $200 for one visit. If the hairstylist just had three clients a day, that would be $600. And over 20 working days a month that would be $12,000. Take away, I don't know ... $3000 for rental/utilities/supplies, and that's like $9000 a month?

$35 + $10 tip every five weeks for an inverted bob. It's a deal. I don't color (natural blond - yippee grays don't show!) The flip side is a pay $120 per month for false eyelashes - blond hair = blond eyelashes.
An elephant for a dime is only a good deal if you need an elephant and have a dime.

Not in my case. Sure cut and color is $140 + $30 tip. But that's two people - one for color and another for cut. The colorist can handle 2/3 people at slightly overlapping intervals, but the stylist can only deal with one head at a time. Plus $3000 for rental/utilities/supplies would definitely be an underestimation. That could easily be the rent alone around here.

To better answer the OP, the cut alone is $65 + tip.

ETA: also, earning high five or low six figures in this HCOL area definitely does not make you "rich."

Some are making six figures. Location, reputation, facilities, and the services you provide all go into that equation. Some stylists don't work 40 hour weeks, some won't do perms or color, some can't give a decent haircut that isn't from the beauty school text book.

Financially successful stylists do continuing education, partner with vendors on product offerings, etc.

The real question is, what is a good haircut worth to you?
if you go somewhere else and you don't like how your haircut was done, was that worth the savings of an extra $7?
Remember you're not going for the ambiance, you are going for that person's skill set. I wouldn't care if they were working out a hole in the wall as long as the job was done right.
I have been going to the same guy for over 35 years. The one time there was a snafu with my appointment and I went to one of the drop-in places it was a disaster. (My hairdresser asked me if I had tried to cut it myself )

I pay $54 for a shorter cut (longer on top) that allows me to not have to mess with my hair when I wash it. (My blow dryer is gathering dust under the bathroom sink). If my hair were a simple shoulder-length cut (like it was years ago) I would think that price was high. Not all ladies cuts are created equal.

The price you pay for haircut depends on so many things ;location, education/ quality of the person cutting your hair etc.
I knew a girl back in the 80s who work for hair performers. and back then her cut and blow dry was $12 -$18. Hair performers was not a fancy place and it was actually a relatively cheap haircut, but she was one of the finest cutters around. Her education was from one of the finest hairstyling schools in the country, so you never know where you'll find a gem. And like anything else in life, the value of something is whatever you feel is worth to you.

I tip $15 on a $45 shampoo/cut/blow dry. Long-time stylist does a great job on my very thick hair which takes extra time.

The barbershop near me has 3 lady barbers...haircuts for seniors are $12. I give a $5 tip and visit the same lady barber every 4 weeks.
I am a woman and one of many women customers who go there.

I would assume that they’re paying more like half of what they make for booth rental, supplies, continuing education, etc. More expensive people are going to be experienced people working in high cost salons. They’re also self employed. So they pay self employment taxes, health insurance, etc.

So for my $80 haircut guy, he spends an hour with me, I pay him $80, and he might make $40 profit on that. $40/hour is $80k/year. He’s been doing hair for 30+ years, and is at the top of his game, and he’s making a 5 figure income in a six figure city (Seattle).

Don't forget the tools.

The best haircut I ever got in my entire life was years ago at a high-end snooty place in Rehoboth Beach. When I told a knowledgeable person about it back home they said "They use the $300 scissors in those places, not the $50 ones"

I have colored my hair myself for 40 years with L'oreal color express...this includes highlighting.
Takes about 2 hrs altogether, mostly waiting. Easy peasy.
Let my hair grow for 2 years and enjoyed a ponytail, but recently just cut it off myself and after a lot of compliments from my exercise buddies, decided it was now the right length (chin length). So I'm now going back to my stylist and it's about $30 for shampoo, cut, blowdry and $5 tip. Have tried the luxurious places but didn't like their cuts.
RbH
Rereading all this I see I'm really! a boglehead and have been a long time.
