Once upon a time in the West, another Sergio Leon movie, not a Clint Eastwood movie.

Bohemian Rhapsody.

Do not recommend. Given its PG-13, we thought it might be ok for family viewing. Big mistake! We quickly turned it off due to it containing filthy language and unsavory themes that are not family friendly.

You missed a good film. It was not necessarily historically accurate, but it was a lot better done and more entertaining than I expected.

Becoming Astrid (2018)

Astrid Ericsson (later Astrid Lindgren) was a smart, vivacious, and somewhat
rebellious teen growing up in rural Sweden, circa 1920s. When she became
pregnant her world was radically changed. What I found touching about this
film were the kind and decent people who helped her through this tumultuous
time.
Heart rending story about the teenager who would later go on to create
Pippi Longstocking and other characters and become one of the most beloved
children's authors in the world.

If Beale Street could Talk. Highly recommend this movie.

Aquaman. If you like comic book action films this was fun.

Can you ever forgive me. Another good film.

I agree. It was much better than I expected. Knowing even a little bit about the story of Queen and Freddie Mercury, it's hard to go into that movie thinking it will be completely "family friendly." But I don't think it deserved worse than a PG-13 rating.

Animal House, on Netflix.

This is the funniest movie of all time. It's gross, disgusting, and juvenile.

"The Best of Enemies." Good movie on a KKK leader and a civil rights leader in Durham in the seventies who fought hard against each other over school integration and ended up lifelong friends after the KKK leader saw that his poor upbringing led him led to his racial views, and that he had more in common with the struggles of African-Americans. Good story of reconciliation.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, on Netflix (2018, PG-13). The plot was interesting and somewhat creative. The animated characters weren't that bad, but were far too human-like for what I was expecting. OTOH, it's a kids' movie and it would probably hold their interest. Otherwise, meh.

Yes, that’s the one. It tends to autocorrect to something I didn’t write. And it was late. I didn’t check it.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Much better than the reviews had led me to expect. I saw it in 2D, but many scenes were obviously intended to look good in 3D. Contains scenes of dragon courtship.

The Dirt on Netflix. Movie based on Motley Crue's memoir I guess. Like many adaptations, it doesn't get everything exactly right. It was ok; I at least didn't turn it off like I do with so many offerings on Netflix.
+1 Very entertaining movie, a lot of fun to watch as I grew up in that era

Best recent movies I saw were
"A Stupid and Futile Gesture" on Netflix (for animal house fans, a must see)

"Bohemian Rhapsody" for Queen fans. Great story and done well.

That's me. I saw it. I liked it. Someday I might see it again, but I think one point of the movie was you can't go back (or did I inject that myself?). Maybe once is enough. It's probably best to enjoy their work.

If there is some theme, to me it's that creative persons have brains that work differently, and what makes you creative may cause you to
do other odd things (like cut off your ear if you are a famous painter). Another common theme reinforced, creatives never get along with
businessmen...the money men one must appease to get your art out there. The very thing that makes your brain creative makes you think differently from the business person. If you watched my other favorite above "Bohemian Rhapsody" it's almost the same exact story. Eccentric creative genius, unloved/appreciated by parents, finds peers who help him become a major success, but the central figure ends up "killing himself", not knowing what to do with himself outside work. Freddie Mercury supposedly was warned he could die if he didn't change his lifestyle, and responded that he'll take his chances. Both are gone...taken too young and depriving the world of more great entertainment.

All the President's Men on Netflix.

I hadn't seen it before, and I love newspaper-based movies (His Girl Friday, Spotlight, Call Northside 777, and I suppose Citizen Kane).

It was interesting and enjoyable slice of the 1970s, but I couldn't help think about how much things have changed (or not) in forty years.

The newspaper industry is much much weaker now I would argue.

The recent Stephen Spielberg "The Post" is a good counterweight to this movie. Redeemed by Merrill Streep as Katharine Graham. I am pretty sure the scene with the south Asian law clerk is contrived ... anachronistic.

Spielberg is emotionally manipulative but the scene where they run the presses ... my eyes flooded with tears.

2 other films about the press and power. The Parallax View another 70s film about paranoid conspiracy. And Defence of the Realm (with Denholm Elliott).

(One should not forget the miniseries with Joe Don Baker Edge of Darkness. The Mel Gibson movie was inferior).

Spotlight is the best recent film I know about investigative reporting. And one of the best.

Besides movies like The French Connection made at the time or Serpico, American Gangster w Denzel Washington is a fairly faithful reconstruction of the early 70s.

So is the Sean Penn one where he tries to kill Richard Nixon.

Definitely weaker and not just newspapers but also, in terms of audience, cable, network, and local TV, per Pew Research Center tracking as of 2017. New business models are always being tried or hoped for, and larger newspapers may still somehow continue to find the time and financing for large investigative pieces such as Watergate and the Pentagon Papers. But most worrisome is the loss of the smaller papers around the country, the severe newsroom cuts for those that survive, and the resulting loss of important local news. So when the presses finally rolled in The Post, I at first resisted/resented the Spielberg dramatics, well done as they were, but finally gave in to a few tears.

As for those presses, I think Spielberg should follow up with the long and violent pressmens’ strike at the “Post” that followed the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. Katharine Graham’s excellent book, Personal History, covers that incredible period in great detail.

And I agree about Spotlight.

Green Book, on Amazon prime - now available for $5.99 as an HD rental. The story line revolves around racial discrimination in the early 1960's. There's lots of drama and some good humor mixed in. It's very well produced and the acting is good. I liked it.

FYI - "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" is also available as a $5.99 HD rental.

Just saw "The Leisure Seeker". Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren were both great! Funny and sad with a kind of predictable ending. Probably better suited to an older demographic. I liked it.
