Rented “The Favourate” on Monday. Didn’t enjoy much. 4/10.

The two women vying for attention of the queen are vicious, nasty human beings. I wish I could get my money back. The actress playing Queen Ann was very good and was in Broadchurch.

Topper on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel.

This is a classic comedy (1937) starring Cary Grant, Constance Bennett, Roland Young and Billie Burke. Ghosts of a fun living couple try to help a hen pecked banker loosen up.
One of my favorites. It was a good movie in general but Roland Young was by far my favorite. If he didn't invent it, he sure polished up the part of the henpecked husband. I remember seeing him, occasionally, in other movies which was always a thrill.

Oddly, when looking him up on IMDB I could only find one other movie I recognized -- King Solomon's Mines. I am pretty sure that's not the only other movie (or TV show?)I have seen him in. I thought he played a higher-up in some spy or police organization.
I wonder if you are thinking of Leo G. Carroll, who played Topper in the television series. He had an appearance and mannerisms similar to Roland Young, and was a "higher-uo" in North By Northwest.
You are exactly right! NXNW was the movie I was thinking of. Yes, the Topper movies and TV series run together in my head.

Both Young and Carroll were excellent as Topper. I remember Carroll scenes from the movie: sitting on the log, riding in the car. Leo G Carroll shows up everywhere! Not so much Roland Young.
Leo G. Carroll was also Solo and Kuryakin's boss in the old Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series.

Greenbook is about an Italian bouncer who becomes the driver of a classically trained black jazz pianist traveling through the south in 1962. We enjoyed the movie. It reminded me of what the two groups had to go through in the 60s. Both grow a lot from their friendship and experiences. Lots of humor in the movie.

The Ridiculous 6, on Netflix. The movie is categorized as a "Western comedy". If you are looking for a comedy that has nothing but mindless grade school humor, this movie is for you.

It's well produced and has several recognizable actors, such as: Adam Sandler, Nick Nolte, Jon Lovitz, and Steve Buscemi.

I'll admit the movie was indeed funny and entertaining, but I slept through some of it. My husband couldn't stop laughing. I'd say this is a guy-movie.

"The Wife," very, very definitely starring Glenn Close. Overall, very good, with best scenes, IMO, including Close’s real-life daughter, Annie Starke, playing her as a young woman, and Close and Christian Slater in a bar, beginning to unravel what’s behind it all. Neat ending (a bit contrived), with Close turning to a blank page in a notebook - a new beginning?

My son and I just watched Captain Marvel at the local cinema.

It is ok at best. Superhero movies are seldom masterpieces but compared to other recent films this one is lacking. If it were not tied into the upcoming Marvel movie it would have done quite poorly at the box office I think.

Good film.
More interesting to go find out more about the real Don Shirley. He did in fact live in an apt. above Carnegie Hall for 50 years and had to move out in his later years to elsewhere in Manhattan. There's a photo of the place in an article .... it was quite elaborate.

Cold War (2018)

Slow, subtle love story against the backdrop of a
dreary communist Poland. Time frame is 1949-1960s
with the black and white motif working perfectly for
this film. Lots of twists and turns and a brief change
of setting, via Paris, livens things up just a little.
I liked this movie but view the trailer first.
I'll check that one out but will recommend "1945" to you. It's in a similar vain.

This week's movies:

No Manches Frida 2 - Definitely not one of the greatest movies - poorly thought out plot with many open questions. However, it was entertaining.

A Star is Born (2018) - a lot better movie than I anticipated. The music was excellent.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

Just rented from Redbox on Blu-ray.
My 6 and 8 year old daughters liked it a lot, as did I (but I like comic book movies.)

Won the Oscar for best animated movie this year.

The other weekend we rented Ralph Breaks the Internet, and we enjoyed that as well.

The Ipcress File (1965) Michael Caine & Alfie (1966) Michael Caine, Jane Asher.

In the first film we have a mid-sixties spy film which was all the rage back then, but here Caine plays a real person instead of a character like the fantastical James Bond. The plot is a bit difficult to follow.

In the second film Caine portrays an amoral self-centered womanizer, a repellent personality, who in the end sees the futility of his lifestyle. This subject matter would’ve been taboo just a few years earlier.

They’re not great films but I recommend both only because I generally like Michael Caine.

The Departed, on Netflix. A police vs. gangster crime thriller which takes place in Boston. Two words: Jack Nicholson. He absolutely makes this movie. It doesn't hurt that Matt Damon and Leonardo diCaprio are also in this 2006 movie, directed by Martin Scorsese.

The plot has good development and kept my interest the entire time. It also had a few good twists. I liked it.

"Triple Frontier" on Netflix. After hearing so many rave reviews about this one, man was I disappointed. Really wanted to like it, but silly story with an unending series of plot holes. I should have known better than to trust great reviews about a movie that starred Ben Affleck and Charlie Hunnam.

Anatomy of a Murder on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel.

This movie starring James Stewart and Lee Remick is about a rape, and the investigation and trial of a homicide in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the early 1950s.

The movie is based on a novel by John D. Voelker, later a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, and is based on real events and a case that Voelker tried as a defense attorney.

THis is a great movie.

"Mirage" on Netflix. Here is the Netflix description:

"A space-time continuum glitch allows Vera to save a boy's life 25 years earlier, but results in the loss of her daughter, whom she fights to get back."

Kind of a cross between "Frequency" and "The Butterfly Effect". It is a Spanish film so there are subtitles. If you are a fan of these types of movies it is well worth a look.

Sort of a tiny detail, but in the film "The Wife," in which Glenn Close was excellent (really they all were good actors), her daughter had light green eyes, and Close has dark brown eyes. I guess I was the only one thinking that since her daughter was portraying the younger version of her character, I thought the eye color should match....... ?

We watched "Blindspotting" last night on blu-ray from Netflix. I liked the movie overall, it had a lot of energy and combined some very serious topics with a lot of comedy and wit. Slight spoiler: if you are someone who has taken gun safety training like I have, one of the early scenes may have you cringing!

Note a movie, but a very interesting radio broadcast on BBC Radio 4, "The Puppet Master". It's about Vladislav Surkov, Putin's Rasputin, the most powerful man you’ve never heard of. Five episodes x 18 minutes.
The Puppet Master is a series that gets to the bewildering heart of contemporary Russia by exploring the fortunes of a secretive, complicated and controversial man called Vladislav Surkov.

Reporter Gabriel Gatehouse speaks fluent Russian and has access to a vast cache of leaked emails from Surkov’s Kremlin office. Using these, plus archive and sources gained over a decade of covering Russia and its wars, Gatehouse goes in search of the man pulling the strings. The journey is by turns dramatic, surprising and surreal, ranging from the battlefield to the theatre and the Kremlin itself. The destination? The post-truth world we inhabit today.

American Animals: A really interesting character study about a robbery gone wrong and it utilizes a novel approach to tell the story. It was a great movie, but the last half hour wasn't as good and turns it into just a good movie.
I liked it too. A very novel approach as you say; for the first part of the movie I actually thought it was a mockumentary.

Interesting too what it says about "white privilege". I suspect that allowed the boys to get off as lightly (though not really all that lightly) as they did. And I suspect it kept the kid who was wielding a gun when he was arrested (if that detail is accurate) from being shot to death.

If you want to get really depressed, watch "Revolutionary Road". About a marriage gone bad. More than one marriage actually, and the last scene is devastating. Good acting, and Michael Shannon is great as usual.

Sorry to Bother You, an indie type film starring the CoStar of Atlanta with a little tinge of Atlanta in it. I love the series Atlanta and I liked this movie very much. While weird from the beginning it really got weird at the end. It was kind of a horse of a different color type movie. If you like your movies real do not watch this movie. But if you like your movies clever, funny, and a tad bit of fantasy, watch this movie.

My Favorite Wife on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel.

This comedy stars Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Wife is lost in a shipwreck, is presumed dead (in a great courtroom scene at the start of the movie), husband remarries, and on the day of his remarriage the missing wife reappears.

Very funny.
