Dumb question but it's been bugging me [What do the the topic icons mean?]

Post by Case59 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 7:40 pm

In the Investment Theory forum, and perhaps some of the others, the topic symbols are mostly a circle with text, but a few are a circle with something that looks like a flame. What does the latter represent?

Thanks.

That it’s a “hot” topic.

Huh I never noticed that before.

Right now the two hot topics on the first page are my thread on leverage and “US stocks in free fall”

Seems contradictory :D

The software switches to that icon at around 1000 posts.

Yes, it switches to that icon at exactly 1000 posts.

As a techie this is one of my favourite comics that I’ve used numerous times and lived many, many times. Image

I’d argue otherwise given your portfolio is designed to hedge a significant equity loss. Jinxing it but I’m quite looking forward to seeing how it handles the next downturn.

Actually I’ve never claimed that. It’s had similarly drawdowns as TSM, just not at the same time as TSM.

Right, but as you said not at the same time.

shouldn't the "hotness" threshold be somehow based on rate instead of quantity? e.g. divide number by age if based on lifetime popularity. Or number over the last time period (like 24 hrs or 72 hrs) for recent popularity. That way things can become "hot" and cool off too.

I agree with you, but I didn't write the software.

The closest thing we have: At the top-left corner of the page, Quick links --> Active topics which displays all posts made in the last 7 days.

Actually, that's the best to start if you want to view posts from all the forums.

The Board index categories:

- US Investors
- Non-US investors
- Community

Will display "active topics" for the forums under their respective category. I didn't count them, but it looks to be around 50 topics displayed.
