Mine came in 36 hours later. So I guess there is a delay due to thanksgiving busy, but you will get it in a few days.

I bought Premium for $46.50 on Nov 21 on Amazon.
Saw Amazon was selling it for $32.50 on Nov 23.
I called Amazon to see if they would reimburse the $14 difference.
Not a chance.

Just tried to order from Walmart four times using three different credit cards. All orders got cancelled due to payment verification issues.
I had this same exact issue. Tried multiple times, this is how I fixed it.
<snip>
I tried the same thing, but using online chat instead.
<snip>
So, my wife bought it with her credit card, and so far, that order has not been cancelled.
But ... after two days, I still have not received an email with a link or instructions to download the software. The status still shows as "preparing order", "email will be sent".

Just chatted with the help center, and they're telling me it will take up to 48 hours for the gift card department to resolve this.

What a headache. I sure wish I had seen the $18 deal at Amazon before trying to order from Walmart.com.

Kevin
I am in same situation. Submitted my order Saturday morning and still waiting on the email. I have made 2 calls to the NO Help Desk. They are clueless about what this is and how it can be rectified. I tried to cancel the order but system will not allow it. If nothing happens today, I will try to cancel through NO Help Desk. Oh the things we will endure to save a few bucks.
After 5 days of waiting and 5 calls to help desk and no software, I gave up and asked for a refund. The help desk was never able to contact the guilty department. They could only send emails. Escalation did not help either. It is amazing that Walmart could not solve this problem.

I finally got mine. Received an email on 11/27 saying "shipped and arriving 11/23". Received the activation key email same day, 11/27.

Bought mine in early November for $44.00. As a result of this thread, I checked Amazon on BF and sure enough it could be had much less than that. Learned my lesson and will wait until BF or later next year.

Did you maybe use a credit card with price protection?

Good thought. Maybe I did.
That said, the amount of time and energy involved in recovering $14 would likely not be worth my trouble.

H&R Block Tax Software 2018 Deluxe + State Win (Email Delivery) is $18.17 at WalMart.com. Not sure how long that price is good, but it is good right now because I just ordered it.

What payment verification issues? is their web system down or something?
After receiving an order confirmation email, a minute or so later, I receive an email with this in it:
Thanks for your recent order. We're really sorry, but we've canceled the items shown below because we couldn't verify some or all of your payment information. Please sign in to your account and be sure your billing address, phone number and credit card information is correct and current.
Kevin
I got that message today too, when I ordered it from a different location than my home (may or may not have anything to do with the problem). I tried it 3 more times with same result. I am 100% sure there is no problem with my payment information. I used their online CHAT to get some help. They said there is an automated security algorithm that is kicking it out, and they could set it so my order would be processed manually by a human being, but it would take up to 3 days. I ordered it under this condition. What a hassle! WalMart.com is never going anywhere if they keep doing crap like this.

Yep, I gave up after several tries with two different credit cards of mine; was ordering from home. Was given the same spiel about the manual ordering process, but missed the 2-hour window. So as already mentioned, we used one of my wife's credit cards, and it worked. Still had to wait several days for the download link to arrive by email.

I just paid $15 for Deluxe download (no state) at Amazon. I'm guessing they dropped prices to match Walmart.

H&R Block software updates are now available. I just downloaded a Federal update and installed my state (PA).

Federal finalized form status: Federal Tax Form Updates for Tax Preparation Software (most dates in January)

State finalized form status: State Tax Form Software Updates (no data entered)

Has anyone else successfully downloaded their Walmart H&R Block 2018 Deluxe purchase? The site from the link seems suspicious.

I finally received my activation key after ordering the Walmart deal on 12/30. HOWEVER, the activation link does NOT take me to the H&R Block site.
Instead it goes to a site that begins with "https://esd.synnex.com..."
The link for the "license key retrieval" (link I would use if I lost the software) takes me to a page with grammar and spelling errors.
I have not clicked the "Download" button as this seems dangerous.
How can I verify this is a safe download? Seems it should be from Walmart, but maybe this is a third party on the Walmart site?

I downloaded it through that site, no issues. Looks and smells like the one I used last year. Idea would be to use key immediately to unlock so no one else has uses it through some key generator.

The company is legit for software distribution. Here's the top-level site: Overview - SYNNEX Corporation

I can't vouch for the actual download site, which would be a client of SYNNEX.

Thanks, LadyGeek. My fear is a fraudulent third party Walmart seller is using a legit software distribution company to distribute a version of H&R Block tax software with some malware or spyware attached.
1. How would I be able to tell if the above is the case? How can I tell if I purchased direct from Walmart, or from a third party selling on Walmart.com?
2. Would there be ANY reason for a legit activation link to not take me to an H&R block site to download the software?

I don't recall this issue when I purchased from Amazon last year; is very concerning. Tax software would be the way to get ALOT of personal info from people to do identity theft. I'm considering cancelling the order and purchasing from Amazon at a higher price (or waiting for another Amazon sale). I already missed the opportunity to make any changes in 2018 due to Walmart taking 5 days to send the activation link.

The only answer I can give you is to try and contact the seller directly. See: Walmart.com Help: Contact a Walmart Marketplace Seller

Ask them "Are you an authorized reseller of H&R Block software?" and see how they answer.

I locked in a 30% discount with TaxAct for 2018 via email offer last summer, but I'm considering forgetting about that and downloading H&R Block from Amazon now for $23, which is still about half of TaxAct's price with State even after the discount.

However, the recent Amazon reviews are full of plenty of angry Mac owners saying "Don't buy this!" and citing a variety of technical issues for which H&R Block and Amazon support were not helpful according to them. As a Mac user, I'd like to hear from other Mac users on Bogleheads - did you have technical issues?

Mac user for over a decade, with H&R Block taxcut - no problems yet. I have noticed that the software updates for taxcut/mac tend to trail the same updates for taxcut/win by a week or so. That doesn't bother me, since i plan to owe tax rather than get a refund.

I've always used TaxACT, download, but they charged me $100 this year with the state. I better switch, but will old data for multiple returns transfer to another program.

H&R Block is playing marketing games I see. $37 for Premium is not 50% off. I paid $44 for Premium full price last November.

Tax form status is available:

- Federal Tax Form Updates for Tax Preparation Software | H&R Block®
- State Tax Form Software Updates | H&R Block®

This is much better than last year, as all of the Federal forms will be ready by 2/14/2019 (Windows) or 2/21/2019 (Mac).

Same here, TaxAct user for 10+ years. Current pricing for downloads is very unattractive, so purchased H&R Block for this year.
Not sure why I would need to transfer anything to another program. I can still login to my TaxAct account and re-download any purchased software for any previous year should I have a need to open or amend and re-file a previous return.

On another note, never needed to use TaxAct support, don’t know how good it is. But last week found a bug in H&R calculations affecting my CA state return and tried to use online chat for help. It’s a joke, the support person must have been chatting with 10 people simultaneously, had to wait several minutes for each response. Was told to just override auto calculations with whatever I thought was the correct number. Not very encouraging.

H&R BLock Deluxe + State + efile + 5% Amazon bonus is down to $24.99 at Amazon currently; lowest it's been for awhile.

State efiling is extra usually at $20-30. Five federal e-files are included.

Unless you live in New York State, in which case state efile is free.
(By NYS law, tax software vendors may not charge extra for state
efile.)

Is anyone able to download tax forms (1099 div / 1099b) from JP Morgan Chase? The only option for import on HR Block is JPM Asset Mgmt and it says, "clients of other firms in the JPM family cannot import into HR Block at Home"

I really do not want to enter all the transactions by hand and would rather not buy turbotax having gotten a deal for HR block.

If they are not importable, then they are not importable. But I doubt you need to enter all the transactions by hand. There is a way to just enter the summary. Did you see that? If not, it is explained in the instructions provided by the IRS.

Doesn't TurboTax offer that payment is due when filing? If so, is there any reason not to use it to check it against another program?

Or if not in NY, print state, put in envelope, mail.

This is what I typically do. Not worth it to me to spend extra to avoid 2-3 minutes work; especially if I don't have a refund coming.

Or if not in NY, print state, put in envelope, mail.

This is what I typically do. Not worth it to me to spend extra to avoid 2-3 minutes work; especially if I don't have a refund coming.
Same here. My Federal return is usually reams of paper which would be a hassle to mail; my state return is just one or two pages - easy peasy.

Interestingly, it is the other way round for me (and many other New Yorkers.) State paper return is longer than the federal.

CA requires you to mail your federal return with your state return, so I must mail quite a large packet to the CA Franchise Tax Board, even though the state return is many less pages than the federal return. I still do it to save the $20.

Bummer. OR only requires you to send the Fed 1040, not the reams of schedules and worksheets that go into it.

I just finished my first-pass through the tax software. Everything looks OK, but I always wait a week or so to review what I've done. The hope is that I'll catch anything I've missed when I do I the final review.

H&R Block's review process caught that my W-2 federal income did not match the state income (PA). This is correct, as PA does not reduce taxable income for employer plan contributions. Federal - yes, state - no. Retirement distributions are not taxed in PA.

The 2019 tax planner is available, but I think it's more complicated than using the IRS Withholding Calculator.

I'll have to manage a W-2, pension, and Social Security (spouse). To the IRS, each income stream is a "job" for the calculator which means I entered 3 jobs.

H&R Block software showed that 85% of the Social Security income was taxed. I entered 85% of the Social Security annual income into the calculator. (The background is in the wiki: Taxation of Social Security benefits)

Does anyone have to buy TWO state programs? (as you live on the border of one state and work in the other, no reciprocity)

if so, what is the cost of the additional state program? (I know you get 1 State free)

Thanks.

Does "your" state have an existing reciprocal agreement with the "other" state? If so, taxes are withheld for "your" state, so no return is needed for the "other" state. See: Reciprocity with neighboring state

I don't know if you were of of this, so I'm asking to be sure.

Otherwise, I've only used the return for PA (even when I was working in NJ, which has a reciprocal agreement with PA).

Well my frugality meter is broken. I've been engaging in deep work for the past 14 months which have probably been the most productive and fruitful of my life. Cal Newport has stated that great intensity comes with deep work and I believe it. I'm paying the $20 to file state because I don't have the "life energy" (to quote an autistic friend) to expend on the hassle of mailing it.

can't the cost be written off? as part of tax prep? or is that eliminated this year?

H&R actually asks about that when going thru its interview (cost of tax prep). I put in the program cost (bought last November) but couldn't one also put in that $20 fee to file state? (as I have to pay as well, tho might mail this year!)

Investment expenses (miscellaneous deductions) have been eliminated this year. H&R Block provides these entries in case your state allows them.

F150HD - Did you figure out how to add a second state? You should be able to do it from the "State" tab. My guess is that you'll have to pay $$$ and may want to use paper forms available on that state's website.

The wiki has a list: List of state departments of revenue

Individual tax prep costs are no longer deductible on federal tax returns.

I pay the $20 to e-file state return and don't think twice about it. It saves my time, it saves the state labor time, no worry of lost/stolen mail, it's immediate, no future hassle if something goes awry with the paper form, no manual error when the state employee enters my paper information in the system, blocks others from filing with my SSN a week (or more) sooner.

Don't tell H&R Block this, but I'd pay $50 in a heartbeat to e-file. Luckily the market drives down the cost as they race to the bottom for customers.

I thought so too, or does that apply for this year for filing in 2020? Many of us bought our programs in 2018.

Seems like they just left the software in place even though tax prep fees are not deductible. They are, however, in my state. They probably left the questions there for those of us who can deduct at state level.
