South Bay Bogleheads January Meeting

Post by jc42 » Thu Jan 03, 2019 1:14 pm

Hello South Bay Bogleheads! Happy New Year!

We’re beginning 2019 with a meeting on Thursday, January 10th, from 6:30-9pm at Merrill Gardens in Campbell. All are welcome. No RSVPs needed. You need not be a Vanguard client to attend.

Doors will open at 6:30 for our first-ever Great Finance & Investment Book Giveaway!
Who’s giving books away? You are! Some of your personal finance and investment books are just posing as clutter and gathering dust, right? Now’s your chance to pass them along for a good cause. Just bring ‘em in and let ‘em go. (I’m bringing four, myself!)

Are you on the look-out for a helpful personal finance or investment book? Here’s your chance. You can’t beat the zero price point!

Beginning at 7:00pm, the main topic of the evening will be “Planning for Healthcare Costs.”
A five-person panel will be offering a wide range of information, experience, and real-world perspectives on dealing with healthcare costs, insurance options, and Medicare. Healthcare choices and costs are wide-ranging. Some things are avoidable, some are not, many can't be known in advance. Come and participate on a real-world discussion of this important topic.

As usual we’ll collect voluntary donations to provide healthy snacks and water.

If you are new to Merrill Gardens, here is important information:

Location: Merrill Gardens is a 3-story senior living community at 2115 Winchester Blvd in Campbell, near the intersection of Winchester Boulevard and Campbell Avenue, close to downtown Campbell.

Parking: Please use nearby ground level retail parking spaces or street parking. DO NOT park in the fountain circle; it's for emergency vehicle access. DO NOT park in the underground garage; it's closed and locked after 8pm.

Building Entry: Enter through the front double doors. Walk straight ahead to the Receptionist's Desk. Sign-in as a guest; write SBB (for South Bay Bogleheads) as your reason for visiting. Our meeting space is down the hallway to the right, in the Activity Room.

Facility Use: Except for the restrooms, do not wander around the facility. It is home for over 100 residents. We must leave the Activity Room in the good order we found it. Everyone is expected to vacate the building by 9pm.

For more information about the meeting, go to https://southbaybogleheads.com/meetings.
To contact us or join our mailing list, go to https://southbaybogleheads.com/contact.

See you on the 10th!

Our meeting this month will be on Monday, February 11th, from 7-9pm at Merrill Gardens in Campbell. All are welcome. No RSVPs needed. You need not be a Vanguard client to attend.

Our topic this month is International Investing. Arun Koparker will lead the discussion. Questions will include

What should be your time horizon?

How often should you rebalance your portfolio?
Everyone will have an opportunity to ask questions, express opinions, and share their experience with ex-US investing. In the course of the evening, we'll break out into smaller sub-groups; this will increase your opportunity to share and learn. April 2019 Meeting Announcement CORRECTED!

Post by jc42 » Wed Apr 03, 2019 12:31 am

Hello South Bay Bogleheads!

Our meeting this month has been changed to Monday, April 22nd, from 7-9pm at Merrill Gardens in Campbell. This is a change from the earlier notice that set the meeting for April 8th. All are welcome. No RSVPs needed. You need not be a Vanguard client to attend.

The topic is widely recognizable, familiar, and unchanged from the previous announcement: Taxes!

The format will include several short presentations. We'll hear about tools and tax preparation, tax law changes, gifts, charitable donations, and tax implications for retirees. Then there'll be plenty of opportunity for questions, sharing experience, and learning. The focus will be on what we learned about taxes this year and what we'll do differently as 2019 unfolds. See you on Monday the 22nd!

Your generous voluntary donations to provide healthy snacks and water are appreciated.

Question: How often are target date funds rebalanced, and are there guardrails or some other mechanism to prevent "over balancing" into a rapidly declining stock market? Is this information proprietary or transparent?

Thanks!

You can find out the answers to that by coming to our meeting this coming Monday.
But if you can't make that, the presentations will be posted on our Chapter website soon thereafter.
I'm sure the answers will be in there.

South Bay Bogleheads, October 2019, Meeting Announcement

Post by jc42 » Tue Oct 01, 2019 1:31 pm

Hello South Bay Bogleheads!

Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 14th, from 7-9pm at Merrill Gardens in Campbell.
The evening's topic will be What's In Your Personal Finance Toolbox?

In this interactive session we'll share information about our favorite financial and investment tools-- what they are, how and why
we use them. This will be useful to DIY'ers like us because, like, we do it ourselves. Pick-up great ideas to simplify and improve
your financial decision-making. Or just feel good about what you're already doing.

There'll be over 500 years of combined money management experience in the room. Come and tap into it.

All are welcome. No RSVPs are needed. You need not be a Vanguard client. Your generous donations help us provide healthy
snacks and water.

👉THIS IS IMPORTANT: WE NEED TO SMOOTH OUT THE CHECK-IN PROCESS AT MERRILL GARDENS.
The touchpad check-in process bogs down when too many people show up at the same time. This delays our program and interferes
with resident use of the system. (An easy for us to "lose our lease" is to give the residents something to complain about.) The best
way to smooth this out is for you to show up earlier.

Our room is open by 6:15. So come as early as you can. Check-in. Enjoy the company of other Bogleheads. Help the team prepare
the room. Have a snack. Check your Facebook feeds. We'll get started at 7pm. Then be sure to check-out when you leave.

Are you new to Merrill Gardens? If so, here's important information about the facility:

Location: Merrill Gardens is a 3-story senior living community at 2115 Winchester Blvd in Campbell, near Winchester Boulevard and
Campbell Avenue, close to downtown Campbell.

Parking: Please use nearby ground level or street parking. DO NOT park in the fountain circle; it's for emergency vehicle access.
DO NOT park in the underground garage; it's closed and locked at 8pm.

Building Entry: Enter through the front double doors. Walk straight ahead to the Receptionist's Desk. Sign-in on the touchpad device.
Our meeting space is down the hallway to the right, in the Activities Room.

Facility Use: Except for the restrooms near the Front Desk, do not wander around the facility. It's home for over 100 residents. We must
leave the Activities Room in the good order we found it, so we practice leave no trace. Everyone is expected to vacate the building by 9pm.
