If I were to judge the book by its cover, I'd say it contains the answers I am looking for! (I've read a few other books by Larry and his co-authors; they are very solid.)

I'm about half-way through the book, and IMHO it is the best book thus far from Larry (and Kevin Grogan).

Many retirement books give great info on the financial side of retirement, the nuts & bolts of accumulating, then withdrawing from your retirement portfolio, but this book starts out on the "mental" side of retirement. First couple of chapters addresses that aspect of retirement. In reading this forum, it is evident to me that many questions about retirement actually have nothing to do with the finances of retirement, more the mental issues about a new adventure. That area is addressed in the book.

Glad enjoying. Here's a piece that appeared in my local STL paper today on the book and making the same point you made.

From Larry's link above:

".....Swedroe himself, who’s 67, is not ready to put his feet up just yet.

“I’ll retire the day it becomes work,” he said. “For me, the job is fun and it keeps me intellectually stimulated, and talking to people about their goals is very rewarding.”

He says he has told Buckingham that he expects to work full-time at least until age 72. With luck, he’ll distill his sound advice into another book or two before then...."

Good to know you aren't retiring soon, Larry!

I went to my pulmonary doc today, and he said he will have to work until he is 85 because he married a woman who is 20 years younger. He is currently 78, so he will be around awhile. Seems like some doctors and academics can work well beyond the norm. Doc said he will retire when wife qualifies for Medicare. I think honestly he likes the challenges. Dang guy has more hair on his head than I had when I was 40! Better genes than mine, I suppose. A lot smarter, too.

I hope I don't find it too disturbing though, since I just retired a couple weeks ago.....

Well, I have finished reading Larry's book, and I can state with no hesitation it is the best book on the subject I have read.

In the last year or so I have read three books, including Larry's, on the subject of retirement.

All three books covered the financial aspects of retirement very well.

The other two books related to retirement are Wade Pfau's book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement?: A Guide to Investment-Based Retirement Income Strategies, and Michael H McClung's book Living Off Your Money: The Modern Mechanics of Investing During Retirement with Stock and Bonds

Both books were great reads, and offered valuable information.

The difference in Larry's book is in his coverage of the non-financial aspects of a successful retirement strategy. Areas that frankly I had never considered. Obviously no book can cover all these items in great detail, but by bringing them up, it can help the reader recognize their need to address different issues that could impact their retirement,

The financial aspects of retirement are also covered very well in Larry's book. Anyone who has read his books knows the subject matter will be covered extensively. Adding in the coverage of the non-financial areas puts it at the top of the heap for me.

Over 4 years into retirement I have already made decisions regarding Roth conversions and delaying SS. The financial section I was interested in concerned the role of SPIAs. His conclusions are similar to those by Wade Pfau and Joe Tomlinson. I will likely purchase a ladder of SPIAs in the next ten years with a small part of my portfolio.

I haven't quite finished the book. There is a lot in the book that confirms the logic of what I am already doing. Larry certainly covers a lot of areas in great detail.

I am going to agree with Broken Man 1999! I'm in the middle of reading it, but the elements of the book that pertain to the bolded sentences above have done nothing but create constant nightly dialogue with my spouse which is preventing me from finishing the book. 8-) That's a good problem and IMO allowing the subject matter in the book to get us thinking all matters in the right direction at ages 57 & 61 as we prepare for the future.

More on the book later in terms of a full review, but at this point and only half way through it - color me beyond impressed with the collection of work that went into this guide. Although I have been reading much on the subject in the past year (due to being laid off last year and finding myself in the "phased retirement" zone), this is jumping off the pages as a "must have/must read" guide that could not have come along at a better time. :beer

Excellent book! I needed to skip around to accomplish a task but I look forward to going back through again.

I do have a question, there were 2 notes in the book that say that you can't contribute to an HSA if you have filed for "Medicare and/or Social Security" and "when you enroll for either Social Security or Medicare" does this only pertain to age 65 and above and therefore someone collecting SS early would still be able to contribute to an HSA? I've searched around and can't come up with a conclusive answer.

thank you.

The answer is once you enroll in SS you are automatically enrolled in Part A of Medicare so once you do that you cannot contribute to HSA, and glad you are enjoying the book---one of the benefits of which is always happy to answer questions from readers.
