best ways to move to Vanguard

Post by wije »

Now that Vanguard has dropped commissions on ETFs, I'm thinking of consolidating everything there from my Etrade and Schwab Roth IRAs. Is it better to sell my ETFs at Etrade and Schwab and move the cash to Vanguard, or just move the ETFs themselves to Vanguard? Will I have to pay transaction fees either way?

If you move the ETFs to Vanguard and Vanguard really has no commissions on ETF transactions, then you won't pay commissions at Vanguard.

If you sell at your existing vendors, then move cash, you should already know how much your existing vendors charge for a transaction or if it is free with them.

You will have to ask your existing vendors what the fees are to close your account(s). Vanguard will not charge you a fee to accept ETFs and money from another vendor.

It also depends if you want to be in cash (out of the market) while the transfer is made.

Not sure why you'd consider anything but in-kind.

Would I still have to pay Schwab and Etrade's outgoing transfer fee?

Schwab charged me $50 for a full transfer out to VG.
I complained using the customer service satisfaction guarantee.
They gave me the $50 back.

To me, it doesn't make much sense worrying about a $25 partial transfer fee when market volatility could be thousands of dollars (admittedly either direction).

Of course I never transfer anywhere that isn't a cash positive move for me.
