Recommend men's undershirts

Post by Myopic squirrel » Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:21 pm

Until now, all my undershirts have been gifts. At the risk of sounding unappreciative, I haven't really cared for them but wore them. Less than satisfied with past iteration of Jockey, Fruit of the Loom, Hanes, and (gasp) even Costco (talk about a 1st World problem!) Sleeves have curled, sleeves short, fabric thin (or very heavy - Costco), don't wear well, all of which means I currently have a ragbag full of tees (other than the ones donated to Purple Heart & SalVal, along with several dozen handkerchiefs *G*). Since this will be my first undershirt foray, anyone care to recommend a brand or store brand? Thank you in advance!

You should see mine. Massive holes, thin as can be.

But guess what, they are undershirts. No one sees them, I don't care :)

The LL Bean T-shirt in white would be very durable, although pricy compared to buying a multipack of undershirts. You could order just one to see if it's too thick or not.
They would definitely last longer than Hanes or Fruit of the Loom.

For use as undershirts:
https://www.target.com/p/men-s-premium- ... nk=sametab (56% Cotton, 38% Modal, 6% Spandex)
UnderArmour has options as well

Hard to find anywhere these days but "any brand" offering 94% Cotton 6% Spandex fit/wear well

Easy to find, "any brand" 94% Cotton 6% Elastane are good choices

For outerwear: Duluth Trading Co and again, UnderArmour

Dickies...they are longer in length...most other brands are too short to remain tucked in.

Propper/ https://www.propper.com/pack-3-t-shirts.html Or used at secondhand stores. Good luck.

I feel your pain since I’m constantly also searching for the perfect T-shirt :).
Those specific one from Calvin Klein is my favorite so far. I wear it sometimes as a regular T-shirt and even then it looks fine. They are definitely long enough to tuck in and also not to baggy when worn under a button up shirt etc.

Hope it helps.

I was gifted some undershirts last year that are made of bamboo. They are much more comfortable than the cotton ones I have worn my whole life. There are many brands out there (my brand has washed off, so don't know the brand!) and they are pricey, but I think the difference is worth it. As suggested earlier, consider buying one, and if it doesn't work for you, you haven't lost much.

I'm trying to think what the OP is doing to their T-shirts to make them fail. Is it the way they are washed? Are they being used to play games with the dogs? To wash the car? Have they been the wrong size from the outset? How long does the OP expect them to last? More than 20 years?

I have Hanes and they are cheap. I buy them at Kohl's.

IMHO Diluth Trading Undershirts are the best, durable, do not shrink and comfortable.

They are are spendy though. I wait for the flash sales 30prcent off.

Donated all my cotton T shirts and replaced with T shirts designed for working out, breathable, stretch, and wicks moisture, much more comfortable than cotton. Usually rotate as follows..wear one day under shirts, wear same night as pajama top, then use to work out the next day then into the dirty clothes basket.

Also use boxer briefs made of similar materials, which are more comfortable than cotton.

I'm happy with Hanes Comfortsoft Tagless V-Neck.

When is the last time you tried Hanes? They have improved over the years. Perhaps other brands on your reject list have also been upgraded since your last use.

Jcpenney Stafford seem to hold up a bit better and not shrink as much as some others.

Very reasonable cost - Hanes Comfort Blend Premium - I get the slim fit v necks.
More expensive - Pair of Thieves - in addition, they make great boxer briefs and socks.

Both available at Target.

Underfit works well for me and is all I own. I have some that are going onto 5 years with no degradation in fit or coloring. I like the deep V necks and fit.

Some folks have mentioned shrinkage. I don't think that matters at all because you buy a size based on its post-shrinkage fit.

Are the t-shirts being washed with too much bleach? I've had barely any t-shirts fail with holes. Sometimes the seam at the bottom will come undone eventually. Mostly they get thrown out because of pit stains or I get tired of them. I've also tried many brands. I am taller and do have the problem of many brands not being long enough.

If money is no object, Hanes beefy tees manufactured prior to 2009.

Why prior to 2009? I haven't had to buy anymore since 2008, and so I cannot comment on the quality thereafter.

Tried the jockey, hanes, etc. in my 20s. Discovered 2xist brand vnecks and have stuck with them for over a decade. They were initially described to me as tshirts for rich people. Premium cotton stays soft through lots of washings. Also they fit well as opposed to the balloon fit of the usual brands. Beware, their website is geared to a certain audience but they are great. I replace them every 3 years or so and order off Amazon.

I unequivocally recommend Jos. A. Bank https://www.josbank.com Their t-shirts are long enough that they don't end up at your navel after a couple of washings.

Those of you who are having problems with 100% cotton undershirts should try a different fabric. Don't rule something out based on decades old beliefs until you've tried it. Cotton got very expensive about 10 years ago and quality of cotton products declined. At the same time polyester with technologies like cool max and blends with lycra, spandex, or rayon came out which I find to be much better products for undershirts and athletic wear.

I have different t-shirts for underwear and outerwear. Cotton still works well for outer wear when I don't want to look like I'm going to the gym. Undershirts are all about performance and comfort with looks coming in 3rd.

I recently bought another pack of Kirkland shirts from Costco and they are not as thick as before. I think they are better in my opinion. Might want to check it out again if you haven't recently.

A friend of mine recommends these, but they're too tight-fitting for me to be comfortable. I like a looser fit.

Cool32 are light. I wear them during the summer and when we travel.

If you want an actual undershirt for wearing under dress shirts, I really like Uniqlo V Neck shirts in their light grey. They're comfortable and cheap and I've had some for years and they don't have holes yet.

Yes, Walmart is the place to buy undershirts. Why wear an undershirt with holes?

This is what I wear. I wear them nearly everyday (spring, summer, fall, winter). Don't know how often my wife buys new ones to change out, but they seem to last at least a few years?

Socks seem to be the thing that "wears out" first for me.

I've worn an undershirt to work every day for the last 15 years and have tried about every brand out there. Fruit of the Loom, Haynes,Jockey, etc are pure junk. You have to order shirts that are 3x larger than you need because they shrink up so bad.

Costco are about the best that I've bought but they are thicker than I like.

One thing I've learned is to get ones with Supima cotton. Lately I've had good luck with Nordstrom brand undershirts with Supima. They are expensive but I wait for a sale and then buy a bunch. They are not as thick as the Costco ones and hold up pretty well.

+1 to everyone saying the Kirkland shirts are too thick. They are BURLY. I have a stack of them that I only wear in the winter. I buy fruit of the loom tagless from Walmart/Target and wear those the rest of the year.

The Uniqlo Airism undershirts are the best. I particularly love their mesh version. These undershirts are thin, breathable, don't stink and have yet to produce a hole in the past few years. They are also inexpensive. Try one and you'll never go back to Hanes.

I buy Costco Kirkland brand for undershirts and Duluth Trading for wearing just a Tee. Duluth is expensive, but I've never found the same quality elsewhere. Their sizes run slightly on the large side. Can also order "tall" sizes for a longer fit. https://www.duluthtrading.com/men/shirts/t-shirts/

I like Terramar, UA, ExOfficio, and Columbia undershirts. Only cotton under shirts I have are by Columbia, and they are not 100%.

Like others, I prefer the synthetic moisture wicking fabrics.

For the most part my experience is this is one of those "you get what you pay for" situations and the ROI is similar with most T-Shirts.
You can buy cheaper (Haynes, etc.) and just accept the fact that they will last only a little one and then need to be replaced. No big deal since they are cheap enough. Or you can pay more money and get something that lasts a little longer. My guess is that the ROI is very similar so I tend to go with the first approach when it comes to tshirts (since no one can see them and I find the cheaper brands very comfortable; when they wear I just replace).

During the winter season, Uniqlo pushes their heat-tech line and cuts back on the Airism production.

Seconded. Their shirts are also cut long, which is helpful if you've had other brands that become untucked.

Personally, I'd care less about the brand as long as they are slim fit and have about 5% spandex so they keep/hold their shape.

Thanks to this thread I ordered a RibbedTee to try out (I'd never heard of them). Retro Fit, Deep-V is my new jam. Much better than far more expensive shirts I've tried (Tommy John). Under Armour's have fit me the best, but these just dethroned them. I'll be purging and ordering more.
