2019 Hedge Fund Contest

Post by BackOfTheNet »

[Current standings are here: Current standings - 2019 hedge fund contest --admin LadyGeek]

Again, I meant to get this up earlier, but this is the thread for the 2019 hedge fund contest. You can find the previous year's contest (2018) here:

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=236514
  • Pick a fancy name for your hedge fund.
  • Before 9:30 am EST on 7 Jan 2019, in this thread, pick up to three stocks to go long and up to three to short. Equal dollar amounts are placed on each position, long or short.
  • Opening prices will be based on Jan 7th close.
  • No trades during the year, except that you can elect at any time during normal exchange business hours to "freeze" a price for any individual position at that day's closing price, i.e. liquidate any position. (Each position carries this option; you can choose to freeze different positions on different days.) Other than that, you're stuck with what you choose for the year.
  • If a stock is taken out in a merger or a bankruptcy during 2019, we will do our best to do the right thing. An all cash offer will result in a freeze at the takeout price. An all stock offer will result in the conversion of the position to the acquiring company's shares. Mixed cash and stock offers, you'll just have to trust me to saw things off fairly.
  • The universe from which to choose is the Russell 3000
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... QQzbu3hG-B

If you pick shares not on this list and it's not caught and corrected before the deadline, your portfolio will be disqualified.
Dividends will not be counted.

Like last year, Tanelorn will be providing fixes and commentary as the year goes on.

Thanks for getting this ready for the next years contest. Here’s a link to the list of eligible companies for the 2019 contest:

https://www.ftserussell.com/files/suppo ... ssell-3000

Note a few may have changed their names or tickers since June’18 when that list was made, and if so, they would still be eligible.

Just a suggestion. In looking at the 2018 contest, the top 5 winners did not pick a single stock LONG. This means that to have the best chance of winning with these particular rules, you would only pick a short (or two), and do not declare any long stocks. I cannot contribute this purely to chance alone as there is not a single person in the top 5 who picked any stock LONG.

I meant to post this only in the 2019 thread, not the 2018 thread.

Fund name: Retail me not

All short:

===

Runners-up were:
- SNAP (not in Russell 3000 index)
- SAGE (revenues down, debts up, bleeding cash)
- NVDA (slapped w/ a class-action lawsuit)

Aside: Surprised to see SHLD showing up in contest entries... it's technically on the list, but wasn't it delisted?
(More importantly, do they have anything left to lose at this point?)

SHLD was indeed delisted and now trades as SHLDQ. It's an eligible stock for the contest since it was in the index last summer (presumably it won't be next year, although who knows how their bankruptcy plays out). The stock has nearly tripled off its lows in the past week, so those betting either way on Sears stock are likely in for a crazy ride.

If there are any new investors who would like to participate, but don't understand what to do, here's a quick explanation:
  • Pick up to 3 stocks (none, 1, 2, or 3) you think will be higher at the end of year. This is the "long" selection.
  • Pick up to 3 stocks (none, 1, 2, or 3) you think will be lower at the end of the year. This is the "short" section.
  • You can pick a single fund (long or short).
  • Pick a fancy name for your fund.
That's it.

Important: The stocks have to be listed in the Russell 3000 index, https://www.ftserussell.com/files/suppo ... ssell-3000.

Helpful suggestions:

- Real-time performance of the stocks within the Russell 3000 index can be found here: Russell 3000 Index Chart, Components, Prices - Barchart.com If you select a stock from this site, double-check it against the "official" contest list, which is not the latest (June 2018).

Tip: The URL can be hacked to sort the list, e.g. "orderDir=asc" can be changed to "orderDir=desc"

- Google "hedge fund name generator" for tips on naming your fund.

- Don't worry about the details. If you get stuck, just pick something. The point is to enter the contest and participate. Then, see how your choices perform over the course of the year.
