What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Puzzle
In proximity of NYC, a witty, intelligent woman in a blue collar
neighborhood takes care of the needs of her family and friends
while neglecting her own aspirations and fulfillment. She discovers
an uncanny knack for rapidly solving jigsaw puzzles and finds there
are others who share this interest and participate in tournaments.
By chance she meets and partners with another puzzle enthusiast
which opens a new world for her but puts strains on her marriage.

Destination Wedding, on Amazon Prime.
This romantic comedy stars Keannu Reeves and Winona Ryder. Two mismatched misfits meet and constantly bicker at a wedding. (When threatened by a wild animal, they argue about whether it is a cougar, puma, or mountain lion.) The movie is way more enjoyable than it sounds.

Looking forward to the Coen Brothers new movie, "Ballad of Buster Scruggs", on Netflix starting Nov 16.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Balla ... er_ScruggsThe Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an American western anthology film written, directed, and produced by the Coen brothers. It stars Tim Blake Nelson, Liam Neeson, James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Tyne Daly, and Tom Waits. It premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2018, where it won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay[3][4] and is scheduled to be released November 16 on Netflix after a theatrical run.
AO Scott, NYTimes review https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/08/movi ... eview.html
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is one of the darkest movies by Joel and Ethan Coen, and also among the silliest. It swerves from goofy to ghastly so deftly and so often that you can’t always tell which is which.

It's a Gift (1934) W.C. Fields, Baby LeRoy. A bumbling henpecked grocer receives an inheritance, sells the grocery store, buys an orange grove sight unseen and moves the family to California to run it. Not my first viewing. I like this film, it's a comedic masterpiece.

The Ghost + Mr. Chicken starring Don Knotts. One of the first movies my mum brought me to as a small boy.

“The Free State of Jones” on Netflix. Good story, well told.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
We watched Prometheus (2012) over the weekend. It's a Ridley Scott flick loosely associated with the Alien franchise. It was alright. Good visuals. Forgettable. Didn't think the story-telling lived up to the premise.

Watched the following:
Eighth grade
Blackkklansman
A wrinkle in time
Enjoyed them all.
Also watched the other side of the wind, an Orson Welles film from the 70's that was edited based on his notes and just released. Fantastic to watch but many what the heck is going on moments. It has a movie within a movie that is about making movies. John Huston plays a Orson Welles like character. Will watch again.

This movie had a ton of funny moments and I would recommend watching on Netflix. From the title I thought it would be some silly non-funny movie starring SNL alumni. But it wasn't.ruralavalon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 09, 2018 4:09 pm Destination Wedding, on Amazon Prime.

We hadn't noticed "Can you ever forgive me", so read up on it, and it sounds great - and got remarkable reviews.
(Hope that's not setting us up for disappointment by expecting *too* much...)
We'll probably see it this weekend. I think the listing get posted today (or tomorrow) for local theatres for the weekend.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Another spaghetti western starring Clint Eastwood. Co-stars Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach.
Of course I'll soon be watching A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.
The English dubbing is horrible. Kinda like watching early Japanese films, where the speakers lips are still moving after their dialog.

I can't remember where I read this, but apparently Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) - IMDb is one of Jack Bogle's favorite movies.
This would have been at least a decade ago so it was before Barclays sold iShares to, ahem, BlackRock. I don't know if that has had any effect on Jack's opinion of the movie or its title. Perhaps a question to ask at the next Bogleheads conference

The Front Runner and Green Book.
Green Book seemed very good until the last 20 minutes. At that point it became super saccharine and predictable. It seems someone at the studio wanted with certainty a crowd pleasing happy ending. They got it. The Front Runner doesn’t have good answers, but it raises many excellent questions.

Blindspotting- great movie that everyone should see. Ending was a very powerful message on how we perceive others
Crazy Rich Asians- Funny funny movie
Ballad of Buster Scruggs - uneven but some of the segments were great. Especially the first and last one. "First time?" was the funniest line in the movie.
No direction: Martin Scorsese excellent documentary of Dylan's career up to the motorcycle wreck.

A once celebrated writer is in a slump and circumstances in her life lead her to
a menial existence where she barely gets by. She begins forging amusing and witty
letters, purportedly written by famous writers/celebrities, and is able to pass them
off to collectors/dealers of memorabilia until the scam is uncovered.
Somewhat sad and spiced with wit, this is a well-made, penetrating film.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Yes, this is a *brag.* I watched "Bienvenido, Mr. Marshall." In Spanish, and as far as I know there isn't even a Region 1 DVD available, let alone a dubbed or subtitled version. It's available on a website called gloria.tv .
The non-brag part is that I understood at best 15-20%.
I was interested in it because it was mentioned in a very good novel, The Heart Has Its Reasons, by Maria Dueñas... (and from the fact that I used the English title you'll realize that I read that in translation.)
"Bienvenido, Mr. Marshall" is a comedy and considered a classic of Spanish cinema. It's from 1953. My Spanish teacher says the humor in it is "very, very Spanish" and impossible to explain. It has something to do with a little Spanish village getting the idea that they can get financial assistance from the Marshall Plan. The village is in the center of Spain, near Madrid. They believe that the US stereotype of Spain is Andalusia, so they start putting up false-front Andalusian façades on their buildings, making Andalusian costume, learning Andalusian dancing. I think this analogous to, say, Old Orchard Beach, Maine trying to fit a stereotype of 1880s Tombstone, Arizona.
The movie includes what I guess are supposed to be archetypes: an ultraconservative Catholic priest, an "hidalgo," and the mayor. One of the weirder (funnier?) parts occurs the night before the Americans are expected to arrive, when each of them has a terrible nightmare in which Spanish and US stereotypes mingle. Weirdest of all (to me), the priest dreams of being arrested by a group of people dressed as KKK members in hoods, but in black instead of white, subjected to a "third degree" interrogation like something out of a 1930s James Cagney crime movie, and dragged before...
...the "Committee on Un-American Activities!"
The denouement is that when the Americans come, they just drive straight through the town without stopping or having a chance to admire the wonderful show the village was ready to put on for them.
The movie came out during the Franco regime, and it is almost certain that it contains veiled criticism of the Franco, presented so as to evade the censor. That unusual scales-of-justice symbol on the judge's lectern, for example--is it supposed to resemble this, or am I trying too hard?
Anyway, I watched it from start to finish, without dubbing or subtitles. It's odd how you can get the feeling that someone (e.g. the major) is "a character" with a distinct and interesting personality, while still having no idea what the personality is.

Turns out I was confusing it with A Simple Plan. This, too, is a good movie with Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Brent Briscoe and Bridget Fonda. Directed by Sam Raimi who gave us various Evil Dead, Batman, and Spider Man movies, among others.
It's not quite a heist movie, but an "after the accidental heist" movie. What happens when three not-so-bright (to various degrees) acquaintances keep a bunch of money they find on a crashed small plane. Things get complicated.

We saw this yesterday afternoon with the kids/grands (ages 3+ and 5+).
NOISY! A bit visually overwhelming as well.
However, it was very interesting that there were some "good" themes sort of hidden in there, almost subliminally, not "preachy".
It was really nice how many 3 generation groups were in there.
And I'm glad I'm not on the clean-up crew after a showing of that. Ugh.

"The Wailing" on Netflix. Not bad, but my daughter had to explain some of it. It was rather long, and I hung in until the end. Even after her explanation I was underwhelmed. Guess I'm not that smart, which proves my school grades were correct.
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round. |
Nobody told me there'd be days like these.

Been on quite a run recently, almost all on MoviePass (make the most while it lasts, which shouldn't be much longer):
Ballad of Buster Scruggs
The Hate U Give
Border (Sweden's submission for 2019 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar)
A Private War
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Green Book
Roma (Mexico's submission for 2019 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar)
The Favourite
Shoplifters (Japan's submission for 2019 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar)
Widows - seeing this later today (Added: Just okay. Script too complicated. Not of same quality as films listed above)
Add: Happy as Lazzaro
All really worthwhile films, ranging from really good to superb, IMHO.

Never read the books but the first one may be a worthwhile way to spend 2 hours; full of plot holes and bit cheesy, but it is action-packed entertainment. The second one is comically bad, we didn't make it through the first 10 minutes.

^^^ I can see that. As a strong hint, Amazon was charging for the first movie (2012), but the second one was free on Amazon Prime.
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Books are better than the movies. Tom Cruise was not an inspired choice to play 6'5" Reacher.

Bohemian Rhapsody. Wow, a wonderful, well-acted biopic, with great music and nice dose of humor. I would be surprised if Rami Malek (as Freddie Mercury) does not at least get nominated for Best Actor.
